What should you check before buying?
Start by considering how long and what kind of session you have in mind. Then check how much space you have and read the care instructions for the garments you want to steam.

What to check |
Who is it for? |
| Touch-ups and storage |
Claimed heat-up time, weight in your hand and tank capacity; check the actual volume supplied. |
When I’m getting a hanging outfit ready at the last minute, I prioritise something that’s easy to handle and store. Around 40% of consumers prioritise quick touch-ups. |
| Sessions with several garments |
Tank capacity and filling, the stability of the support, and how much space the steamer takes up when assembled and stored. |
If I’m steaming several garments in a row, I look for a practical support without overlooking the floor space it needs. Around 30% of consumers prioritise sessions with several garments. |
| Precise finishing |
Whether it has a soleplate, whether you can use a suitable surface, and the temperature permitted by the care label. |
For collars, seams or sharp creases, I prefer to be able to iron garments flat when their care instructions allow it. This is a priority for around 20% of consumers. |
| Fabrics and safety |
The garment’s full care label, the appliance instructions and precautions against contact with hot steam. |
When a garment has delicate details or specific care restrictions, I check the instructions before choosing how to treat it. Around 10% of consumers put these precautions first. |
The care symbols described by GINETEX include ironing at a low temperature without steam. Don’t assume that a fabric’s composition alone means all its seams, prints or finishes can withstand steam.
Brands to compare
The specifications below relate to specific ranges or models; they don’t represent an assessment of everything these brands offer.
SteamOne
James 2 is an example of a foldable handheld model, while George 2 is a freestanding appliance with a vertical support.
- SteamOne states that James 2 heats up in 15 seconds and has 80 and 150 ml tank options. George 2 is presented with a support and a 2 L tank.
- The stated running times for George 2 differ between the manufacturer’s product page and the Joybuy listing: 45 minutes versus up to 90 minutes. These figures can’t be directly compared without shared testing conditions.
Braun
QuickStyle 5 GS5031BL is a handheld steamer that’s also advertised for horizontal use.
- Braun Household France says its soleplate can be used vertically or horizontally.
- The technical specifications state a steam output of 22 g/min, while the product description claims up to 25 g/min. Check the figure and conditions for the model you’re interested in.
Philips
The steamers and the 5000 Series DST5030/80 steam iron illustrate two different uses: vertical touch-ups and ironing flat.
- Philips France states that the DST5030/80 iron has a continuous steam output of 45 g/min and a 180 g steam boost.
- The iron has a soleplate and is used on a suitable surface, so it won’t meet a need for steaming without an ironing surface.
Calor
Access Steam Care DT9100C0 combines a handheld steamer with a vertical support for guided touch-ups.
- Calor’s product page lists three steam settings, a 200 ml tank and a support.
- The support takes up more space than a handheld appliance on its own. Availability shown on the manufacturer’s product page may change over time and vary between retailers.
Rowenta
Access Steam First is a handheld model worth comparing for touch-ups and easy storage.
- Rowenta states that this model heats up in 15 seconds and has a steam output of up to 20 g/min.
- These figures apply to Access Steam First and don’t describe every steamer in the range; they aren’t an independent measurement.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use steam on all garments, seams and embellishments?
No. Check the garment care label and its specific instructions, especially for seams, prints and embellishments. GINETEX includes ironing at a low temperature without steam among its care instructions. The fabric alone doesn’t guarantee that every finish can withstand this treatment.
How can I protect the hand holding the garment taut?
Keep your hand away from the steam and follow your appliance’s instructions. Philips says the glove supplied with the relevant freestanding models should be worn on the hand holding the garment taut, to protect it from hot steam.
What water should I use in a garment steamer?
Follow the instructions for the model you’ve bought. Philips says the relevant appliances can be used with tap water, but recommends distilled or demineralised water in hard-water areas. It also advises against using perfumed water or pouring descaling products into the tank. These instructions don’t automatically apply to other brands.
What protection applies if an appliance bought from a trader is faulty or not as described?
In France, the legal guarantee of conformity is mandatory for new, second-hand or refurbished goods sold by a trader to a consumer, and claims are made to the seller. The Ministry of the Economy and Finance distinguishes this from an optional commercial guarantee. Check the terms that apply to your purchase.
Does the CE marking prove that a garment steamer is more effective?
No. The CE marking doesn’t compare steaming speed or quality. For electrical equipment covered by the Low Voltage Directive—which includes equipment designed for 50 to 1 000 V alternating current and 75 to 1 500 V direct current—it relates to the applicable regulatory requirements. The DGCCRF clarifies that it isn’t a certification mark. The directive is presented in its consolidated version dated 30 May 2026.
