A garden or patio bathed in light becomes much more than just an outdoor area: it's an extension of your home. For unforgettable summer evenings, safer pathways, or to highlight your flowerbeds, the right garden lighting makes all the difference.
String lights, spotlights, bollards, solar or mains-powered... The options are vast, and it's easy to get lost. Don't worry! This guide is here to break down the essential criteria and present our selection of the best products to bring your lighting project to life.
Before you fall for the first model you see, let's review a few key questions to help you make a smart, suitable choice.
This is the first major decision, and it will influence everything else.
What are you looking for? A soft ambience for evening drinks, or practical lighting to prevent tripping? The type of light fixture will dictate the mood.
Today, outdoor lighting is getting smart and adapting to your needs. A smart light can be controlled from a smartphone app, letting you change colours, brightness, or schedule lighting scenes.
Last but not least: water resistance. Never overlook the Ingress Protection (IP) rating. An IP44 rating is the bare minimum for a sheltered location (under an awning, for example). For direct exposure to rain, aim for IP65 or higher for peace of mind.
To move from theory to practice, our editors have selected four products that meet very different needs.

The brightness (in lumens, lm) depends on your goal. For soft ambient lighting, 100 to 300 lm per light point is sufficient. To clearly see where you're walking on a path, aim for 300 to 500 lm. For deterrent security lighting, go above 700 lm.
For a mains-powered model, safety is paramount: use a waterproof outdoor socket protected by a residual-current device (RCD). Be careful not to stretch the cable too tightly, as this could damage it. With solar-powered string lights, it's much simpler: find a sunny spot for the panel, and let your creativity run wild with the rest!
Let's be honest: their effectiveness decreases. With less sun and shorter days, the battery life takes a hit. Quality models with good panels and a robust battery will fare better, but don't expect the same performance as in the middle of July. A tip: remember to clean the solar panel from time to time to maximise its charge.
