Who is this choice for?

Holidaymakers with a cool box or fridge

You’re staying somewhere you can keep fresh yoghurts at the temperature shown on their packaging. The key is to keep them chilled during the journey, too.

People heading out for the day

You’re looking for something fruity to take on a journey or day out where there’s no fridge close at hand. Any stated time out of the fridge must apply to the exact product and size you’re buying.

Shoppers who care about ingredients

You compare fruit pieces, sugars, fat, sweeteners and allergens. Check this information on the label of each product, whatever its size.

What should you check before buying?

First decide how you’ll store the product during the journey and once you arrive. Then compare the size and ingredients.

Fresh fruit yoghurt in a pot

Choose this if: you can keep it at the temperature shown on the packaging until you put it in the fridge.

Bear in mind: there’s a choice of recipes and textures, but it needs to stay chilled during your journey and stay.

180 g Yop fruit drink

Consider this if: you’re looking for a drinkable option for a day out and the packaging is for the specific 180 g Yop in question.

Limit: Yoplait says this specific product and size can be kept out of the fridge for up to 8 hours. This doesn’t apply to all drinkable yoghurts.

What to consider What to check Who is it for?
Keeping it chilled The storage temperature and use-by date on the packaging, and whether you can keep it chilled during your journey and stay. If I’m taking pots for several days, I need to be able to keep them chilled from the moment I buy them. Around 50% of consumers put this requirement at the top of their list.
A size for a day out The exact product and size, as well as its storage instructions. Yoplait’s guidance applies to the 180 g fruit Yop. For a day out without a fridge nearby, I’m looking for a size I can take with me in the conditions shown on its packaging. This is a priority for around 30% of consumers.
Ingredients and label The ingredients list, allergens, sugars and fat per 100 g, and any sweeteners. When several recipes suit my storage options, I mainly want to know what’s in them. For around 20% of consumers, ingredients come before other factors when choosing.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming “holiday” means it’s long-life

Fresh fruit yoghurt still needs to be stored as directed on the packaging. The DGCCRF points out that a rise in temperature encourages microbial growth, and that you should follow the storage instructions for products with a use-by date.

Before buying a multipack, make sure you can transport it chilled and quickly put it away in suitable conditions.

  • Assuming the guidance for 180 g Yop applies to all yoghurts

The “up to 8 hours out of the fridge” guidance comes from Yoplait and applies to its 180 g fruit Yop. It doesn’t cover other sizes or fruit yoghurts in pots.

Check the storage instructions for the exact product you plan to take with you.

  • Choosing a 0% recipe without checking the ingredients

The product information for Panier de Yoplait 0% lists sweeteners. The 0% claim alone doesn’t tell you everything that’s in the recipe.

Compare the ingredients list, nutritional information and allergens shown on each pack.
