Who are these pack sizes for?

Households that cook often

If parsley regularly features in your sauces, stir-fries or slow-cooked dishes, compare the 250 g bags available from retailers including Picard, Auchan and Rustica at E.Leclerc. Choose an amount you can use and store easily once opened.

First-time shoppers with a small freezer

If you’re not yet sure how often you’ll use herbs, a 50 g pack takes up less room than a 250 g bag. Just make sure it contains the herb you want.

Anyone looking to try different herbs

A blend lets you try several herbs without buying a pack of each one. Check the ingredients: Picard’s salad herb blend contains chives, shallots and parsley, among other things, so it won’t replace plain parsley in every recipe.

What should you look for?

What matters What to check Who is it for?
A good supply of parsley The 250 g weight and whether the bag can be closed securely after opening. If parsley often features in my sauces and stir-fries, I want a supply I can put away between uses. Around 50% of shoppers put having a good supply of parsley first.
Freezer space The net weight of 50 g and how much room the pack takes up. When my freezer is already full, I’d rather try a small amount before setting aside more space for a single herb. Making the most of freezer space is the priority for around 30% of shoppers.
Variety of herbs The ingredients list, to tell a single herb apart from a blend. If I want to vary my seasonings, I’d rather know which herbs are included than choose parsley alone. Around 20% of shoppers prioritise variety.

Things to bear in mind

  • Assuming a large bag will be easy to reseal

If the bag is awkward to close, it can be harder to store the parsley between uses. This is especially worth checking if you plan to open a 250 g bag often.

Check the seal before you buy and, if needed, have a suitable freezer-safe container ready for storage.

  • Mistaking a blend for plain parsley

Picard’s salad herb blend contains six aromatic ingredients, including shallots, chives and parsley. Its ingredients matter if your recipe calls for a specific herb.

Read the product name and ingredients list: choose plain parsley if that’s what you want to use, or a blend if its ingredients suit your dishes.

  • Picking up frozen herbs too early in your shop

To help maintain the cold chain, Anses recommends buying frozen food at the end of your shop, using an insulated bag and keeping transport time to a minimum.

Add frozen herbs to your basket at the end, then put them in the freezer as soon as you get home. Also follow the storage instructions on the pack.

Frequently asked questions

What size should I choose for a large bag of frozen parsley?

A 250 g bag is a useful size to compare when looking at the larger parsley packs from Picard, Auchan and Rustica at E.Leclerc. It isn’t a regulated definition of a “family-size” pack, so choose it if you use parsley regularly and have somewhere to store the bag once it’s open.

Can you add frozen parsley straight to a dish?

Yes. Auchan’s product information for its 250 g chopped parsley says you can use it without defrosting first, in hot or cold dishes. For any other product, follow the instructions on the pack.

How should you transport frozen herbs on your first food shop?

Pick them up at the end of your shop and carry them in an insulated bag, keeping your journey as short as possible, in line with Anses advice. Put them in the freezer promptly when you get home. Picard recommends storing its chopped parsley at −18 °C and says not to refreeze it once defrosted.
