Which type of user?

Single person with a very compact kitchenette

You want to store a few days’ worth of shopping without losing worktop space or obstructing movement around the room. A table-top fridge or compact single-door fridge is worth considering first.

Studio flat tenant who eats frozen food

You need a proper freezer compartment for fresh or frozen food, without necessarily having enough space for a large fridge freezer.

Studio flat occupant with a fitted kitchen

You are replacing an appliance in an existing housing unit: confirm the housing dimensions, plinth ventilation and hinge system before choosing a built-in model.

Buying priorities

First choose a format that fits your kitchen, then check the capacity and freezer compartment based on your shopping habits.

Priority What to check Your needs
Usable capacity Compare the total capacity, the split between refrigeration and freezing, and how often you shop. UFC-Que Choisir suggests 100 to 150 litres of usable capacity for one person. I do smaller shops frequently and want to avoid an oversized appliance. If I store more fresh or frozen food, a larger capacity may be more suitable.
Overall dimensions Measure the height, width and depth, then check the door-opening direction and delivery route. For a built-in model, also check the housing unit, hinges and cabinet ventilation. I want to keep access to the kitchenette, storage areas and door clear. A narrow front does not guarantee that the depth will fit.
Freezing Check for a 4-star freezer compartment, its actual capacity and the conditions stated for the exact model. A simple ice box is not suitable for the same uses. I want to be able to freeze fresh food or regularly keep frozen food. A small compartment may be enough for occasional use, but not necessarily for a substantial stock.
Noise and energy consumption Compare the sound level in dB(A) and annual consumption in kWh/year between appliances of similar format and capacity. The energy label and EPREL database provide this information for registered models. In a single living space, I prefer to minimise the stated noise level and compare consumption on a like-for-like basis.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Choosing a built-in model based only on its external dimensions

The housing unit, depth, hinges and ventilation may be incompatible, preventing a proper installation.

Photograph the housing unit, measure its height, width and depth, identify the door type and consult the instructions for the exact model before ordering.

  • Confusing an ice box with a 4-star freezer compartment

A simple ice box may not be sufficient for regularly eating frozen food or freezing fresh food.

If you freeze food regularly, check for the “4-star” designation, the compartment capacity and the stated temperatures for the model you have chosen.

  • Measuring only the space where the appliance will go

An appliance that fits the kitchenette may not pass through the front door, hallway, stairwell or lift.

Measure access points and check the carrier’s delivery conditions before ordering. BUT specifically recommends checking access and delivery arrangements.

  • Assuming collection of the old appliance is automatic

Collection depends on buying an appliance of the same type, and some delivery services require advance selection as well as an appliance that has been defrosted and cleaned.

Request collection when placing your order, check the seller’s terms and prepare the old fridge according to the collection instructions.

Brand guide

Beko

Worth considering for a table-top fridge intended for small kitchens. Beko presents the TSE1264FMGN with a width of 54 cm and a 4-star freezer compartment.

  • The manufacturer presents this format as suitable for restricted spaces and specifies a 4-star compartment.
  • Beko presents MinFrost technology as reducing frost build-up.
  • Check the full dimensions, capacity, noise level, energy rating and installation clearances for the exact model.

Liebherr

An option for a wider and deeper freestanding table-top fridge when 111 litres may be sufficient. According to Liebherr, the KTe551 measures 85 × 55 × 60.7 cm.

  • The manufacturer states that the KTe551 has a noise level of 37 dB and a 4-star freezer compartment.
  • Liebherr presents SmartFrost as technology that reduces frost build-up.
  • At 60.7 cm deep, check how far it will extend beyond the worktop and the clearance needed to open the door.

Bosch

Worth considering when the kitchenette is already designed for an under-worktop built-in appliance. For the KUL22VFD0, Bosch specifies dimensions of 820 × 598 × 548 mm, 93 litres of refrigeration capacity and 35 dB(A).

  • The manufacturer specifies a 4-star compartment, a door alarm and plinth ventilation for under-worktop installation.
  • Built-in installation requires you to confirm the housing unit, hinges and ventilation; the external dimensions alone are not enough.

Frequently asked questions

What capacity should one person aim for in a studio flat?

UFC-Que Choisir suggests 100 to 150 litres of usable capacity for one person. Choose the lower end of this range if you shop frequently and buy little frozen food; allow for more capacity or a compact fridge freezer if you do larger weekly shops.

Is a small freezer compartment enough for frozen food?

Not always: UFC-Que Choisir states that a simple ice box is not sufficient for a large quantity of frozen food. To freeze fresh food and store frozen food for longer periods, look for a 4-star compartment and check its capacity; Beko and Liebherr state that the relevant models can maintain temperatures of -18 °C or below.

Can I replace an under-worktop appliance with any compact fridge?

No. For a built-in model, check the housing unit, depth, door or hinge system and the ventilation route specified for the model. Bosch states, in particular, that its 82 cm under-worktop appliances ventilate through the plinth.

What should I compare on a fridge energy label in France?

The energy label and public EPREL database allow you to compare the energy rating, annual consumption in kWh, compartment capacities and noise emissions. Compare these figures between appliances of similar format and capacity, as actual consumption varies depending on use and location.

Does the seller have to take back my old fridge?

The French Ministry for Ecological Transition’s FAQ states that household appliances must be collected on a “one-for-one” basis, with no floor-area threshold, provided you purchase a product of the same type. Delivery and preparation arrangements may vary: at BUT, for example, the option must be selected and the appliance being collected must be defrosted and cleaned.
