Who is this choice for?

Households replacing an energy-hungry appliance

If your priority is the energy use of an appliance that runs constantly, compare the kWh/year of models of the same type and with a similar capacity, rather than looking at the energy efficiency class alone.

Households storing fresh and frozen food

If you want one appliance for both, check the fridge and freezer capacities separately: the total capacity doesn’t tell you how the space is divided.

Households needing more freezer space

A separate freezer can provide extra space for frozen food if you already have enough storage for fresh food. However, it adds another appliance that runs constantly.

Which criteria should you prioritise?

Fridge

Consider it if: you mainly store fresh food and need little space for frozen food.

Limitation: freezer space may be limited or unavailable, depending on the model.

Fridge-freezer

Consider it if: you regularly store fresh and frozen food in one appliance.

Limitation: even a suitable total capacity may leave too little space in one of the two compartments.

Freezer

Consider it if: your main need is extra freezer capacity and you already have enough space for fresh food.

Limitation: it won’t replace a fridge and uses electricity continuously.

To compare appliances that suit your needs, check the kWh/year and the capacity of each compartment on the energy label. ADEME points out that fridges and freezers run continuously, and that size and usage also affect energy consumption.

What matters to you What to check Who this is for
Energy use and usable capacity Compare the kWh/year and capacity in litres of appliances of the same type and with a similar capacity. If I’m replacing an appliance that runs day and night, I want enough space without choosing a capacity I won’t use. Around 42% of consumers prioritise this balance between energy use and capacity.
Space for fresh and frozen food For a fridge-freezer, check the fridge and freezer capacities in litres separately. I regularly buy both fresh and frozen food, so I’m looking for one appliance with two compartments that suit my habits. This is the priority for around 33% of consumers.
Dedicated freezer capacity Check the freezer capacity in litres, the space it will take up and the kWh/year of the freezer you’re considering. I already have enough space for fresh food, but need more room for frozen food. For around 25% of consumers, extra freezer capacity comes before other criteria.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Comparing energy efficiency ratings alone

Appliances in different categories or with different capacities don’t offer the same performance. The rating alone can’t tell you whether their energy use suits your needs.

For your final comparison, look at models of the same type and with a similar usable capacity, then check their kWh/year and the capacity of each compartment in litres.

  • Choosing a fridge-freezer without checking both compartments

A large total capacity can hide an unsuitable split if you use much more fridge space than freezer space, or vice versa.

Work out how much space you need for each before comparing the separate capacities listed for the models.

  • Treating No Frost as a sizing criterion

According to Liebherr, NoFrost limits frost build-up. However, this feature alone doesn’t tell you what capacity you need or a model’s kWh/year.

Choose the right type and capacity first, then compare the features and energy use of similar models.

  • Forgetting to check the space before ordering

Usable capacity doesn’t guarantee that an appliance will fit in your kitchen or that its door will open properly.

Measure the available height, width and depth, then check these against the appliance dimensions and the clearances required for your chosen model.

Brands to know

Bosch

Bosch’s fridge-freezer range includes different formats for storing fresh and frozen food in one appliance.

  • Capacity varies by model. For example, Bosch lists 214 l of fridge space and 94 l of freezer space for the KGV36VBEAS.
  • Frost management features aren’t available across the whole range, so check the specifications of the model you’re considering.

Electrolux

Electrolux freezers are worth considering if you want to compare dedicated freezer capacities and different cooling systems.

  • Electrolux offers Low Frost and No Frost options, depending on the model.
  • Before choosing, compare the capacity in litres, kWh/year and installation requirements of the freezer you’re considering.

Liebherr

Liebherr’s freezer range may suit households looking for dedicated storage for frozen food.

  • Liebherr offers NoFrost models, a technology the brand says helps limit frost build-up.
  • To compare energy use, look at the kWh/year of models with a similar format and capacity rather than focusing on NoFrost alone.

Frequently asked questions

What should I compare on a fridge or freezer energy label?

Compare annual energy use in kWh, the capacity in litres of the relevant compartments and the noise level in dB(A). The information in the European Commission’s public EPREL database distinguishes between fridge and freezer capacities, among other things. So, when checking the kWh/year, take the type of appliance and the space you need into account.

Is the energy efficiency class enough to compare two appliances?

No. Also compare their annual energy use and usable capacity when they meet the same needs. ADEME points out that the size and use of an appliance affect the energy consumption of a fridge or freezer.

Does No Frost always reduce electricity use?

Don’t assume so: Liebherr describes No Frost as a way to limit frost build-up. To compare energy use, check the kWh/year of models with a similar format and capacity.

Which cooling appliances are covered by European energy labelling?

European Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) 2019/2016 sets out labelling requirements for mains-powered electric refrigeration appliances with a volume greater than 10 l and less than or equal to 1,500 l. When choosing a model sold in France, compare the information on its energy label with its product listing.
