Who is this guide for?

Anyone using a cold garage or utility room

If the room gets very cold in winter, check its minimum temperature before choosing an appliance. According to Beko France and Bosch Électroménager France, the SN-T range starts at 10 °C, so it does not, on its own, cover temperatures below that.

Anyone using a very warm room

In a conservatory, a sun-facing kitchen or a warm outbuilding, the highest temperature reached matters just as much as the lowest. Compare it with the model’s temperature range, then check its energy consumption and any information available about performance in warm conditions.

Households choosing an appliance format

Once you’ve confirmed that the room is suitable, choose between a single-door fridge and a fridge freezer based on the space available, usable capacity and how much frozen food you need to store.

What should you look for?

Make sure the appliance is suitable for the room before choosing its format: the right capacity won’t make up for an ambient temperature outside the appliance’s specified range.

Fridge freezer

Consider this if: you need to refrigerate and freeze food in the same appliance, in a room that’s suitable for the model you choose.

Bear in mind: the capacity of both compartments, energy consumption and overall size still need to suit the way you use it.

Single-door fridge

Consider this if: your main need is refrigeration and you can store frozen food separately.

Bear in mind: any appliance used to store frozen food must also be suitable for its location.

Move the appliance

Consider this if: the room’s temperatures fall outside the range of the appliances you want to buy.

Bear in mind: you’ll need to find space elsewhere, along with a suitable power supply and enough clearance around the appliance.

Factor What to check What matters to shoppers
Ambient temperature Record the room’s minimum and maximum temperatures, then check that they fall within the range stated for the exact model. Suitability below 10 °C must be explicitly confirmed by the manufacturer. When my garage gets cold in winter, I want an appliance designed to work at the temperatures it actually reaches; around 42% of shoppers in this situation would put this first.
Format and capacity Once you’ve checked the temperature range, compare the usable capacity of each compartment, the dimensions and the clearances specified in the manual. If my room is suitable for the appliance, I want enough space for fresh food and, if needed, frozen food; almost 33% of shoppers in this situation would prioritise format and capacity.
Energy consumption and maintenance For models that are suitable, compare the stated annual energy consumption, cooling system, noise level and defrosting requirements. Once I’ve chosen the location and format, I want to compare appliances based on everyday use; around 25% of shoppers in this situation would prioritise energy consumption and maintenance.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Relying on the energy label to judge suitability

The energy efficiency rating doesn’t tell you the ambient temperatures a fridge is designed to work in. An appliance may meet your energy consumption requirements but still be unsuitable for the place you want to put it.

Check the climate range for the exact model in its documentation, then compare the energy consumption of models that are suitable.

  • Assuming SN-T covers a garage that drops below freezing

According to Beko France and Bosch Électroménager France, SN-T covers 10 to 43 °C. This designation does not confirm that the appliance can be used below 10 °C.

If your room gets colder than this, look for a manufacturer’s statement confirming that it can operate at the lowest temperature reached, or choose another location.

  • Assuming a feature applies to every model from a brand

Beko France states that the B5RCNE416HG can operate down to -5 °C thanks to Freezer Guard. This applies to that model only, not to all Beko fridges.

Have the full model number to hand when checking the product details or manual, and confirm the stated temperature range for the appliance you plan to buy.

  • Choosing capacity before measuring the room

A fridge freezer with enough space for your shopping won’t necessarily be suitable for a cold or very hot outbuilding.

First, record the room’s temperatures and check the model’s range. Then look at its dimensions, ventilation requirements and usable capacity.

Brands to consider

Beko

The range includes fridges and freezers whose climate class can be checked on a model-by-model basis.

  • According to Beko France, the SN-T class covers 10 to 43 °C. The brand also states that its B5RCNE416HG, which features Freezer Guard, can operate in a room that gets down to -5 °C.
  • The stated suitability of the B5RCNE416HG does not apply to other models in the range.

Bosch

Bosch offers a range that includes freestanding fridges and fridge freezers, with information about their climate classes.

  • Bosch Électroménager France gives a range of 10 to 43 °C for the SN-T class. Its KGN367ICT fridge freezer is listed with 218 L of fridge capacity and 103 L of freezer capacity.
  • Before considering the KGN367ICT for a cold or very hot room, check the climate class for this model in its technical documentation.

Liebherr

The range includes single-door fridges and fridge freezers to suit different freezing needs.

  • Liebherr France lists a capacity of 213 L and an SN-ST class for the Ke230-26 single-door fridge. Based on the climate class ranges given by Beko France and Bosch Électroménager France, SN-ST covers 10 to 38 °C.
  • This stated range does not, on its own, cover a room that drops below 10 °C or gets hotter than 38 °C.

Frequently asked questions

Is an SN-T class fridge suitable for an unheated garage?

It’s suitable only if the garage temperature stays within the range specified for the model. Beko France and Bosch Électroménager France give a range of 10 to 43 °C for SN-T. If your garage drops below 10 °C, look for an explicit rating for that temperature or move the appliance elsewhere.

Does the energy efficiency rating show whether a fridge can cope with the cold?

No. It doesn’t replace the climate class, which tells you the ambient temperatures the appliance is designed for. First check the range stated for the exact model, then compare the energy information for appliances that are suitable for the room.

Is a fridge freezer or a single-door fridge better for an outbuilding?

Choose a fridge freezer if you need to refrigerate and freeze food in the same place; a single-door model may suit you if refrigeration is your main requirement. Either way, its climate range must cover the temperatures in the outbuilding. If you use a separate freezer, check that it’s suitable for its own location too.

Does a test at 35 °C prove that an appliance is also suitable for a cold room?

No. UFC-Que Choisir’s test protocol looks at factors such as temperature stability at 35 °C, but this result doesn’t tell you whether the appliance can be used below the manufacturer’s stated minimum temperature. For a cold room, check the range for the exact model.
