Who is this choice for ?

People who sleep near the fridge

If you sleep in the same room as your appliance, pay attention to the sounds it makes during its cycles, not just the figure on the label. UFC-Que Choisir explains how sounds during operating cycles are assessed in its test protocol.

People living in a small studio flat

When space is limited, measure the recess or available space and compare those dimensions with the usable capacity. UFC-Que Choisir’s buying guide distinguishes between countertop, under-counter and fridge-freezer formats.

People who store frozen food in an open-plan kitchen

If you regularly store frozen food, compare the freezer compartment’s capacity with your actual needs. For example, the LG GBB61DSJEN specifications published by LG France state a 107 l freezer capacity out of 341 l in total.

Which features should you compare ?

Compact or under-counter model

Choose this if : space is limited and your storage needs are modest.

Check : usable capacity and installation requirements. An integrated model needs a suitable recess and ventilation.

Fridge-freezer

Choose this if : you regularly need to store both fresh and frozen food in the same appliance.

Check : dimensions, access and door clearance, the capacity of both compartments and annual energy consumption.

Single-door fridge with a small freezer compartment

Choose this if : you only store a small amount of frozen food and the model offers enough capacity.

Check : the compartment’s specifications. A small freezer may not meet substantial frozen food storage needs.

In France, the energy label allows you to compare noise emissions and energy consumption between models in the same category, according to the ministry responsible for the ecological transition. It’s a useful starting point, but it cannot tell you on its own how bothersome a fridge will feel.

Criteria What to check Who is this for ?
Noise and rest Compare the dB rating and noise class of the exact model. Look for an independent test of the sounds it makes during its cycles, if available. If I sleep or work in the same room, I want to minimise noises that might disturb me. Around 40% of consumers prioritise quiet operation.
Dimensions and usable capacity Measure the space, access route and door clearance. Check the usable capacity and installation requirements. When space is limited, I want the appliance to fit and open without sacrificing the storage I need. Around 30% of consumers prioritise a compact footprint.
Freezer capacity Check the capacity and specifications of the freezer compartment for the exact model. If I regularly store frozen food, I want a suitable compartment rather than a small freezer that isn’t up to the job. Around 20% of consumers prioritise freezer capacity.
Energy consumption Compare the kWh/year figures and energy ratings of models that already meet your capacity and usage needs. Once I’ve worked out how much storage I need, I want to compare annual energy consumption to understand the cost over time. Around 10% of consumers make energy consumption their priority.

Pitfalls to avoid

  • Assuming the same dB rating guarantees the same level of comfort

The stated figure alone does not tell you about the tone, vibrations or operating noises. In an article published in 2017, UFC-Que Choisir rated two models listed at 40 dB differently.

Use the label to shortlist models, then look for a listening test of the exact model, if available.

  • Buying an under-counter model without checking the recess

An integrated appliance has different installation requirements from a freestanding model. Bosch says its integrated under-counter models are ventilated through the plinth; this does not apply to every brand.

Check the measurements, ventilation, door clearance and instructions for the model you choose.

An unsuitable installation may mean changing your kitchen layout or choosing a different size.

  • Assuming a small freezer is suitable for every need

A low-capacity compartment may not be suitable if you regularly store frozen food.

Compare the model’s capacity and freezing specifications. Consider a fridge-freezer if the compartment doesn’t meet your needs.

  • Treating “No Frost” or “inverter” as proof that a fridge is quiet

The cooling system and compressor technology are not enough to determine how noisy an appliance will seem.

Compare the cooling system and stated noise level separately. If available, look for a test of the exact model’s operating cycles.

Brands and ranges to consider for your needs

Liebherr

Models featured by Liebherr France include a countertop fridge and a fridge-freezer.

  • The Rsdci 1620 is listed at 141 l and 34 dB; the CND2003-2 at 371 l and 35 dB.
  • The CND2003-2 is 201.5 cm tall. These manufacturer figures are no substitute for a listening test of the exact model.

Bosch

The KUR21VFE0 is an example of an integrated under-counter fridge with no freezer compartment.

  • Bosch France lists a capacity of 134 l and a noise level of 35 dB for this model.
  • It is designed for integrated installation, so check that your recess and the model’s installation requirements are suitable before choosing it.

LG

The GBB61DSJEN is an example of a fridge-freezer with separate compartments for fresh and frozen food.

  • LG France lists a total capacity of 341 l, including 107 l for the freezer, as well as a noise level of 35 dB and energy consumption of 253 kWh/year.
  • The stated depth is 68.2 cm. The declared figures are not an independent test of perceived noise.

Samsung

Samsung describes the RB38C600EB1/EF as a 390 l fridge-freezer for people who prioritise capacity.

  • The manufacturer lists a 390 l capacity for this model.
  • Capacity alone cannot tell you how noisy a fridge will seem. Check the label and look for a test of the exact model if quiet is a priority, especially if you sleep nearby.

Frequently asked questions

Will a fridge listed at 35 dB be inaudible at night ?

No. This figure does not guarantee that the fridge will be inaudible or won’t disturb you. The stated noise level and noise class help you compare emissions, but do not tell you on their own what sounds the appliance makes during its cycles. In a 2017 article, UFC-Que Choisir gave different ratings to two appliances listed at 40 dB; this historical result does not test current models.

How do you check whether an under-counter fridge will fit ?

Measure the recess and check the instructions for the exact model, particularly the requirements for ventilation and door clearance. Bosch says its integrated under-counter models are ventilated through the plinth; this is not a universal rule for appliances from other brands.

How do you compare energy consumption and warranties ?

To compare annual energy consumption, multiply the kWh/year figure on the label by the price per kWh on your tariff; actual usage may vary. In France, the Ministry of the Economy notes that the statutory guarantee of conformity applies to new, second-hand and refurbished goods sold by a trader, subject to the conditions set out in law. It is separate from a commercial warranty.

What information does the energy label provide, and what happens to your old appliance ?

For fridges covered by EU labelling rules, the energy label includes information such as energy consumption, capacity and noise emissions. When you buy a new appliance, the retailer is required to offer free take-back of an equivalent used appliance on a “like-for-like” basis. Check the delivery information for the practical arrangements.
