Who this guide is for

Smaller shops for a studio flat

You mainly want to store everyday fresh food in a low-profile appliance, without taking up space with capacity that doesn’t suit your habits. Que Choisir gives an average guideline of 100 to 150 litres of usable capacity for one person, which you can adjust to the amount you buy.

A kitchen in your living space

If your fridge is near where you sleep or work, compare the stated noise emissions for the exact models you’re considering. These figures help you compare appliances, but can’t guarantee how disruptive one will be in your home.

Food shops and meals to freeze

If you want to freeze fresh food or keep supplies in the freezer, check that the compartment is designed for this purpose. A four-star freezer compartment and a small fridge freezer offer different layouts and have different space requirements.

What to compare before you buy

For a studio flat or a home occupied by one person, start with the available space and your shopping habits. Then check noise, freezing performance and energy consumption separately.

Criteria What to check Who it matters most to
Size and installation External dimensions, required clearances, ventilation, door opening and niche dimensions for an integrated model. If my kitchen is small, I want to check that the appliance and its door will actually fit in the space; around 28 % of consumers prioritise size.
Noise in your living space Stated noise level, unit of measurement, noise class and installation instructions. If I sleep or work near the fridge, I compare the stated emissions rather than assuming a low-profile model will be quiet; around 22 % of consumers put noise first.
Capacity for fresh food Usable fridge capacity, separate from the total capacity if the appliance includes a freezer, and the storage layout. Que Choisir recommends an average of 100 to 150 litres of usable capacity for one person. I want to store my usual shopping without making room for capacity I don’t need; around 22 % of consumers prioritise fresh food capacity.
Freezing capacity Number of stars, whether it is explicitly stated that the compartment can freeze fresh food, and the compartment capacity. If I freeze fresh food or keep supplies in the freezer, I check that the compartment is suitable for this purpose; around 17 % of consumers prioritise frozen storage.
Energy use and overall cost Current energy class, consumption in kWh/year, compartment capacities and included features. I compare annual energy consumption and the features I actually need before choosing; around 11 % of consumers put overall cost first.

For the fridges covered, the European Commission states that the current energy label scale has run from A to G since 1st March 2021. Compare models that suit your needs, rather than treating an old energy class as equivalent to the current scale.

Pitfalls to avoid

  • Confusing the appliance dimensions with the space it needs

An integrated appliance needs a compatible niche and setup. Its width alone doesn’t confirm that the door panel, hinges or ventilation will fit.

Compare your kitchen measurements with the installation diagram for the exact model, and check which way the door opens.

Depending on the setup, you may also need to modify the unit or pay for an installation service.

  • Taking the total capacity to mean fridge capacity

Total capacity may include a freezer compartment. For example, Bosch lists 93 litres of usable fridge capacity separately for the KUL22VFD0.

Compare the capacity of each compartment separately and consider how each one will be used to store your shopping.

  • Treating a stated noise level as a guarantee of quiet operation

The figure shown on a product page doesn’t measure how disruptive the appliance will feel in your living space.

Compare the exact models, units and noise classes, then follow the installation instructions.

  • Confusing an optional extended warranty with your statutory rights

If you buy from a professional seller, you have a legal guarantee of conformity, regardless of whether you buy an optional extension, according to Service Public.

Before choosing an extension, check what it actually covers and what its terms are.

An optional commercial extension has a separate cost; compare its benefits with your statutory rights.

Brands featured in these formats

Liebherr

The French KTe550, KTe551 and CUe231-26 models illustrate table-top formats, with or without a four-star freezer compartment, as well as a small fridge freezer.

  • The product pages for these models list dimensions, capacities and stated noise levels separately, making it easier to compare the models in question.
  • Liebherr says SmartFrost helps reduce frost build-up and defrosting. This doesn’t mean maintenance is no longer needed, or that the feature is available on every Liebherr model.

Beko

Beko France describes the TSE1284N as a table-top fridge designed for smaller kitchens and flats, among other spaces.

  • The model’s product page lists a width of 54 cm, a reversible door and glass shelves.
  • Beko says MinFrost reduces frost build-up. This isn’t a promise that defrosting will never be needed, nor is it a feature shared across the whole range.

Bosch

The KUL22VFD0 is an under-counter integrated option with a freezer compartment, for a kitchenette with a compatible niche.

  • Bosch Home Appliances France lists 93 litres of usable fridge capacity and a stated noise level of 35 dB (A) re 1 pW for this model.
  • These specifications don’t guarantee that the appliance will fit your niche or operate imperceptibly; check the dimensions and instructions in the manual.

Frequently asked questions

Is the recommended 100 to 150 litres for one person a requirement ?

No. Que Choisir gives this range as an average guideline for usable capacity. Adjust it to suit your shopping habits, and distinguish fridge capacity from total capacity if the appliance includes a freezer.

Can a small compartment freeze fresh food ?

Check the compartment’s star rating and instructions. For the KTe551, Liebherr explicitly states that its four-star compartment can freeze fresh food and store it long term. Don’t assume this feature applies to every freezer compartment.

How much clearance should you leave around a fridge ?

Follow the clearance and ventilation instructions in the manual for the exact model. The external dimensions alone don’t determine how it should be installed, and a clearance specified for another model isn’t a general rule.

Does the climate class tell you what temperature to set inside the fridge ?

No. It refers to the ambient temperature range the appliance is designed to operate in. For example, Beko France’s guide lists 10 to 32 °C for SN, 16 to 32 °C for N and 10 to 43 °C for SN-T. Check the climate class of your model.

Which energy label should you compare when buying a fridge in France ?

For the fridges covered, the current scale has run from A to G since 1st March 2021, according to the European Commission. Compare the energy class and consumption in kWh/year for appliances that meet your needs.
