Who is this guide for?

Anyone with a narrow kitchenette

You need to be able to fit the appliance in place and open its door without disrupting your planned layout. UFC-Que Choisir describes compact fridges as suitable for studio flats; Bosch’s installation instructions also remind you to check the clearances required for the model.

Anyone who keeps frozen food

You want to know whether a small freezer compartment will hold enough for your needs or whether a fridge-freezer would be a better fit. Beko and Liebherr product specifications give the capacity of individual models, so compare them without assuming the figures apply to an entire range.

Anyone who sleeps near the fridge

If your kitchen shares your living space, you can compare the stated noise levels of models that already meet your space and storage needs. The figures published by manufacturers apply to the models specified.

What to compare

When choosing a fridge for a studio flat in France, start with the space available. Then compare fridge capacity, freezing performance, noise and energy consumption separately, according to how you plan to use it.

Consideration What to check Who will care most?
Size and installation Measure the space, delivery access and door clearance; check the installation type and the model’s instructions. I need to fit the appliance into a narrow kitchenette and be able to open its door; around 28% of consumers prioritise whether it will fit in the first place.
Freezer space and performance Check the star rating, freezer capacity and, if you freeze fresh food, the stated capacity in kg/24 h. I keep frozen food or want to freeze a few items and need to check the compartment can handle it; around 22% of consumers put freezing performance first.
Fridge capacity for your shopping Compare the litres allocated to refrigeration, not just the total capacity, with how much food you keep between shopping trips. I want to store fresh food according to how often I shop, without using space unnecessarily for a freezer; around 22% of consumers prioritise fridge capacity.
Noise in your living space Compare the stated noise levels in dB(A) of models that meet your space and storage needs. I sleep or work near the appliance and want to compare its stated noise level once my installation and storage needs are met; around 17% of consumers prioritise a quieter fridge.
Electricity consumption Compare the stated annual consumption in kWh/year; to estimate the cost, apply the same rate in €/kWh to each model. I want to keep electricity costs down while choosing an appliance that suits my shopping habits; around 11% of consumers prioritise annual energy consumption.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Confusing an under-counter fridge with any short fridge

Freestanding and integrated appliances may need different ventilation and door fittings. So a short appliance is not automatically suitable for an integrated housing space.

Check the installation type and the model’s instructions before choosing. Don’t apply another brand’s ventilation guidance to your appliance.

Depending on the space, you may need to adapt the cabinetry or installation.

  • Comparing total capacity alone

Total capacity doesn’t show how the space is divided between the fridge and freezer, which may not suit your shopping habits.

Compare the available litres for fresh food and frozen food separately.

  • Assuming a small compartment will hold lots of frozen food

According to Beko, the TSE1285NG has a 13 l four-star compartment and a stated freezing capacity of 2.6 kg/24 h. These specifications apply to this model only.

Check the star rating and capacity, and if you want to freeze fresh food, check the stated capacity in kg/24 h.

Brands and models to know

Beko

The TSE1285NG is an example of a freestanding compact fridge with a freezer compartment, suitable for a small home.

  • Beko states that the TSE1285NG has 101 l of fridge capacity, a 13 l four-star freezer compartment and a noise level of 35 dB(A).
  • The 13 l freezer compartment limits the space available for frozen food; these figures don’t describe the entire Beko range.

Bosch

The KUR21VFE0 is an integrated under-counter fridge to consider if your kitchen has a compatible housing space and cupboard door.

  • Bosch states that this model has 134 l of fridge capacity, a noise level of 35 dB(A) and dimensions of 820 × 598 × 548 mm.
  • The KUR21VFE0 has no freezer compartment. Its dimensions alone don’t confirm that it will fit the housing space, so check the installation instructions.

Liebherr

The KTe551 and CTPele231-26 illustrate two different formats: a compact fridge and a taller fridge-freezer.

  • According to Liebherr, the KTe551 measures 85 × 55 × 60,7 cm and has a total capacity of 111 l; the CTPele231-26 measures 140,1 × 55 × 63 cm and has a capacity of 233 l.
  • A similar width doesn’t mean the appliances take up the same space or suit the same needs. Check the available height and depth for the model you’re considering.

Frequently asked questions

Do a freezer box and a four-star compartment meet the same needs?

Don’t rely on the word “freezer” alone. If you want to freeze fresh food, check the model’s classification and capacity. Beko states that the TSE1285NG has a 13 l four-star compartment and a freezing capacity of 2.6 kg/24 h; these specifications don’t apply to other models.

Can you fit a freestanding compact fridge under a worktop?

Don’t assume it will fit based on the appliance’s height alone. Check the installation type and the clearances specified in its instructions. An integrated under-counter model is a different configuration. Bosch’s general ventilation guidance doesn’t replace the instructions provided by another manufacturer.

How can you check the temperature after installation?

Anses recommends a temperature of 0 to +4 °C at the coldest point in the fridge. Check this point and adjust the appliance according to its instructions, rather than assuming a particular thermostat setting corresponds to a precise temperature.

How do you compare the electricity consumption of two models?

Check the stated annual consumption in kWh/year and apply the same rate from your electricity tariff in €/kWh to each model. This gives you an estimated cost, not a guaranteed bill. Compare usable capacities too, so you don’t choose an appliance that’s too small just because it uses less energy.

What statutory guarantee applies to a fridge bought from a trader in France?

According to the Ministry of the Economy, the statutory guarantee of conformity is compulsory for new, second-hand or refurbished goods sold by a trader to a consumer. Any commercial guarantee offered in addition doesn’t replace this statutory guarantee.
