Who is this guide for ?

Fitting out a small space

In a studio flat or a tight space, check the dimensions, ventilation and door opening before prioritising capacity. Côté Maison covers the measurements and clearance required, while the Beko TSE1504FN is an example of a compact freestanding model.

Open-plan kitchen and living room

If you spend time close to the appliance, you’ll need to weigh up usable capacity, energy consumption and noise comfort. UFC-Que Choisir highlights that how we perceive noise is subjective, and that a decibel figure alone cannot predict it.

Keeping an existing housing unit

When replacing a built-in appliance, check the internal dimensions, ventilation and door-fixing system. The specifications documented by Liebherr and Electrolux show that housing requirements vary by model.

What to compare

Compact freestanding fridge

Consider it : if space is limited and you don’t need a cabinet door fitted to the front.

Bear in mind : some compact models don’t have a freezer and aren’t automatically suitable for an enclosed housing unit.

Fridge-freezer

Consider it : if you need both fridge and freezer compartments and have enough height.

Check : the depth, delivery route and door clearance, as well as the width.

Built-in fridge

Consider it : if the housing unit, ventilation and door fixing are all compatible with the model.

Check : the housing dimensions and cabinet-door fitting, which can limit your options when replacing an appliance.

Freestanding between cabinets

Consider it : if you want the appliance’s front to remain visible while positioning it near a wall or between cabinets.

Check : the model’s ventilation requirements and door clearance. A feature such as Perfect Fit applies only to certain Bosch models.

Consideration What to check Who tends to prioritise it
Dimensions and door clearance Measure the width, height and depth, the delivery route, door clearance and housing dimensions. Check the ventilation requirements and hinges too. If I’m replacing an appliance in a housing unit, I want to make sure it fits, has enough ventilation and opens without blocking access. Around 31 % of consumers prioritise this physical fit.
Noise comfort Compare the stated noise emissions and noise class on the label. If noise is a key concern, look for an assessment of the specific model. In a studio flat or open-plan kitchen, I want to be able to spend time near the appliance without relying on the decibel figure alone. Around 25 % of consumers put quiet operation at the top of their list.
Capacity and freezing Compare the fridge and freezer compartment capacities separately, and check that there’s a freezer if you need one. If my shopping includes fresh and frozen food, I want the compartments to suit my everyday needs. Around 25 % of consumers prioritise storage capacity.
Energy consumption Check the kWh/year figure and energy class, then compare appliances with similar capacities and features. As a fridge runs continuously, I want to compare its energy consumption without losing sight of what it offers. Around 19 % of consumers prioritise kWh/year.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Confusing a freestanding fridge in a gap with a built-in model behind a cabinet door

These installations have different fixing and ventilation requirements. An appliance may fit in the space but still be incompatible with the cabinet front or airflow.

Before choosing, check the installation type, housing dimensions, door fitting and the model’s ventilation instructions.

An incompatible cabinet front or ventilation setup could mean rethinking your installation plans.

  • Choosing based on width alone

Depth, the delivery route and the space in front of the appliance matter too. The Bosch KGN367LDF is 60 cm wide and 66.5 cm deep, according to Bosch Électroménager France.

Measure all three dimensions and check the delivery route, door clearance and whether the drawers can be removed.

  • Assuming the stated decibel level guarantees quiet operation

According to UFC-Que Choisir, sounds with different frequencies or vibrations can be perceived differently, even when the figures shown are similar.

Use the label to compare models and, if noise matters a lot, look for a sound assessment of the specific model.

  • Comparing kWh/year without checking the freezer function

An appliance without a freezer doesn’t offer the same functionality as a fridge-freezer. ADEME points out that fridges run continuously, so compare appliances that first meet your storage needs.

Choose the capacity and compartments you need, then compare the annual energy consumption of suitable models.

Brands to know when comparing styles

Beko

Examples of compact freestanding and built-in models for smaller spaces.

  • Beko France states that the TSE1504FN is 54 cm wide and has no freezer compartment.
  • The B1904N uses sliding hinges for the cabinet door, so these models aren’t interchangeable.

Bosch

Freestanding fridge-freezers, including some models designed to fit near a wall or between cabinets.

  • Bosch Électroménager France lists a 218 l fridge capacity and a 103 l freezer capacity for the KGN367LDF.
  • Check that the advertised door opening without protrusion on certain Perfect Fit models applies to the model and space you’ve chosen. This isn’t a built-in appliance with a cabinet front.

Liebherr

Built-in appliances with documented housing dimensions and installation instructions.

  • Liebherr France lists a housing size of 87.4–89 × 56–57 × 55 cm for the IRSe 3901, along with sliding hinges and a stated noise level of 35 dB.
  • Its stated total capacity of 117 l may not suit everyone’s storage needs.

Electrolux

Built-in fridge-freezers designed to fit into a suitable housing unit.

  • For the KNS3SE18S, Electrolux France lists a housing height of 1 780 mm, a total net capacity of 249 l, including 70 l for the freezer, and a stated noise level of 39 dB.
  • The manufacturer specifies that its built-in appliances need suitable ventilation. These figures apply to this model, not the entire range.

Frequently asked questions

What dimensions should I measure before ordering ?

Measure the width, height and depth of the space, as well as the delivery route. Check for walls, handles and skirting boards, and allow enough room in front of the door to remove the drawers. For a built-in appliance, also compare the housing dimensions, ventilation requirements and cabinet-door fixing details in the instructions.

How do I compare capacity, noise and energy consumption on the label ?

The European label includes the energy class, annual consumption in kWh, compartment capacities, noise emissions and noise class. The European Commission has used an A to G scale for fridges and freezers since 1st March 2021. Compare energy consumption between appliances with similar capacities : the stated noise level alone isn’t enough to predict how it will sound in your room.

Can I enclose a freestanding fridge in a cabinet ?

Not just because it’s compact. A built-in appliance is designed for a housing unit and its ventilation setup, while a freestanding model installed between cabinets must meet the requirements in its instructions. A feature such as Perfect Fit applies only to models where the manufacturer specifies it.

How can I check that food is being kept safely after installation ?

Anses recommends a temperature of 0 to +4 °C at the coldest point, checked regularly, for example with a thermometer. Avoid overfilling the fridge so that cold air can circulate, and clean it regularly. This food safety advice doesn’t guarantee the performance of any particular model.

What rights and costs should I expect when buying in France ?

When a business sells goods to an individual, the legal guarantee of conformity applies. The Ministry of the Economy states that you have two years to make a claim. The DGCCRF explains that when you buy a new appliance, the retailer must offer free take-back of an old, equivalent appliance on a “one-for-one” basis. Check with the seller how delivery, installation and take-back work in practice.
