Renters with limited space
If you’re replacing an appliance in a fitted kitchen, measure the housing, available depth and any obstacles that could prevent the door from opening before comparing capacities.
In a small rental property, first choose an appliance that fits the available space, allows the door to open and meets the ventilation requirements in its manual. A compact freestanding fridge-freezer gives you separate fridge and freezer compartments without relying on existing cabinetry; only consider a built-in model if the housing and door system are suitable. Then compare the usable capacity of each compartment, the stated annual energy consumption and the noise level.
If you’re replacing an appliance in a fitted kitchen, measure the housing, available depth and any obstacles that could prevent the door from opening before comparing capacities.
Total capacity alone doesn’t tell you how much storage space is available. Compare the usable litres in the fridge and freezer separately, then check how easy the drawers are to access.
If your kitchen is next to your living or sleeping area, check the noise level in dB(A) as well as the stated kWh/year. ADEME explains that the energy label helps you compare this information.
An under-counter fridge is worth considering if headroom is very limited and its fridge and freezer capacities suit your needs. With a compact fridge-freezer, consider compartment sizes and installation type separately: freestanding and built-in models require different checks.
| What matters | What to check | What consumers might prioritise |
|---|---|---|
| Fitting it in the kitchen | Dimensions and door clearance ; housing, fixings and ventilation requirements for the model. | When space is tight, I want to install the appliance without blocking a walkway or modifying the cabinetry. Around 36 % of consumers would make this compatibility their top priority. |
| Space for fresh and frozen food | Usable litres in each compartment ; access to the freezer drawers. | If I regularly store frozen food, a large total capacity doesn’t tell me how much space is set aside for it. Compartment layout would be the top criterion for around 29 % of consumers. |
| Noise and energy use | Stated kWh/year and dB(A), comparing models of a similar format and capacity. | With a kitchen close to my living area, I want to consider noise without overlooking electricity use. Around 21 % of consumers would put this information first. |
| Parts and after-sales service | Exact model number, information about spare parts and after-sales service contact details. | To avoid a breakdown making the property difficult to use for an extended period, I want to know who to contact and how to identify the right parts. This support would be a priority for around 14 % of consumers. |
A suitable height doesn’t guarantee that the depth, door fixing or ventilation will work. Electrolux France also explains that its installation service doesn’t include any necessary carpentry or door-panel work.
Measure every dimension, take photos of the cabinetry and compare them with the installation diagram for the model you’re considering.
If the cabinetry or door panel isn’t suitable, alterations may be needed before installation.
The total doesn’t show how much space is set aside for frozen food. Beko and Bosch model specifications clearly list fridge and freezer capacities separately.
Work out how much space you need for each type of food, then check the usable litres for each compartment and whether the drawers are easy to access.
Energy use and noise are separate considerations. An energy efficiency rating alone won’t tell you how noisy an appliance will be in a kitchen close to your living area.
Check the kWh/year and dB(A) on the label or product details, then compare appliances with similar capacities and formats.
European requirements for certain parts intended for professional repairers don’t guarantee that a specific part will be available immediately or that a repair will be straightforward.
Keep the full model number and check the parts and after-sales service information for that exact model.
A diagnosis and repair can also leave the appliance out of action for a variable amount of time, depending on the fault.
These examples can help you identify which features to compare for a specific model; they don’t apply to every range from each brand.
Worth considering when looking at freestanding fridge-freezers and their installation requirements.
Worth considering when comparing compartment capacities in a freestanding fridge-freezer.
Worth considering if your kitchen already has a housing designed for a built-in fridge-freezer.
These models suit two situations: choosing a compact freestanding fridge-freezer or replacing a built-in appliance in compatible cabinetry. Before choosing a model, check its manual against the space you have and make sure its compartment sizes suit your needs.

Worth considering if you’re looking for a freestanding fridge-freezer for a narrow space, once you’ve checked all its dimensions and the required ventilation.

Worth considering if limited height points you towards a freestanding fridge-freezer, provided the door can open properly in your kitchen.

Worth considering if you want to store fresh and frozen food in a freestanding fridge-freezer. Check that the door can open properly in the space available.

Worth considering if you’re replacing a built-in appliance and don’t use the freezer compartment much; check that its capacity suits the frozen food you usually store.

Worth considering if you’re replacing a built-in fridge-freezer, provided your cabinetry can accommodate this model and its compartments meet your storage needs.
Not without checking the installation requirements. Even if the freestanding model appears to fit, check its depth, door clearance and ventilation gaps as specified in the manual. Bosch Électroménager advises against forcing a built-in appliance into a housing that’s too small.
Compare the usable litres in the fridge and freezer separately, then check the freezer layout. Total capacity doesn’t tell you how much space will actually be available for frozen food.
No. To compare appliances with similar formats and capacities, check their kWh/year and noise levels in dB(A) separately on the energy label or product details. ADEME presents the energy label as a tool for comparing this information.
No. European ecodesign regulations require certain parts to be made available to professional repairers for at least seven years, but this doesn’t guarantee that a specific part will be available immediately or tell you how long a repair will take. Ask for information about the exact model number of the appliance.
Contact the seller. Under the French Consumer Code, consumers can ask for goods to be brought into conformity by choosing between repair and replacement, subject to the rules that apply to that choice. Keep your proof of purchase, the model number and any correspondence with the seller.
