Which households?

Households doing a full weekly shop

You need to accommodate a large delivery of fresh food while keeping a proper frozen-food section. A fridge freezer is a good starting point to consider, comparing the fridge and freezer capacities separately.

Small homes with occasional freezing needs

Prioritise the appliance’s footprint and fresh-food capacity if you only buy a small amount of frozen food. A top-freezer or one-door model with a freezer may be suitable, but a freezer compartment does not replace a separate freezer section for regular use.

Large families with a spacious kitchen

A multi-door model may be worth considering for its generous capacity, provided that its width, depth, weight and delivery route are suitable for your home.

Buying priorities

First choose the balance between fresh and frozen food, then check the installation requirements and the energy-label information for your chosen model.

Priority What to check Your needs
Usable capacity Compare the fridge and freezer litres separately. Look at how the capacity is divided according to the format, not just the total capacity. I want to store a full shop without reducing the space available for frozen food. For one person, UFC-Que Choisir recommends an average of 100 to 150 L, followed by an additional 50 L per person.
Installation Record the H × W × D dimensions, clearance for movement and access to your home. For an integrated model, check the housing, ventilation and door system. I need to be able to install the appliance without blocking doors or discovering that it is incompatible with my kitchen unit.
Energy and noise Compare the A to G scale between appliances with similar capacities and formats, along with kWh/year, noise level in dB and noise class. The label’s QR code provides access to EPREL. In an open-plan kitchen or small home, I want to check the stated noise level and annual consumption rather than choosing based on the energy letter alone.
Freezing Check the capacity of the separate freezer compartment, the number of drawers and, where stated, the freezing capacity. Do not infer these features from the cooling system alone. I buy frozen food every week, so I need a dedicated section rather than just a small freezer compartment.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Choosing solely by the advertised total capacity

Fresh-food and freezer capacity meet two different needs. An appliance may be large overall but still offer too little freezer space for regular frozen-food shopping.

Note down the capacity you want for fresh food and for frozen food separately, then compare both figures on the label or product page.

  • Ordering an integrated model without measuring the housing and door fitting

The housing dimensions, ventilation and door-fixing system vary from one model to another. The front width alone does not confirm compatibility.

Measure the height, width and depth of the housing, check the door fitting and read the model’s installation instructions before ordering.

A kitchen unit or door may need adapting if the appliance does not match the existing installation.

  • Comparing only the energy-class letter

The class should be considered alongside kWh/year, compartment capacities and noise. Two appliances with different formats or capacities will not offer the same day-to-day performance.

To choose between two models, compare their labels at similar capacities and formats, then check the model’s detailed information in EPREL using the QR code.

  • Underestimating the footprint of a multi-door model

Large capacities often mean considerable width, depth and weight, which can make delivery access and door opening more difficult.

Measure the installation space and the clearance needed to open the doors, as well as corridors, stairs and doorways along the delivery route.

Frequently asked questions

What capacity should a household buying fresh and frozen food aim for?

Start with the fresh-food capacity: UFC-Que Choisir recommends an average of 100 to 150 L for one person, followed by 50 L for each additional person. Then check the freezer capacity separately according to the amount of frozen food you buy and how often you shop, as a large total capacity does not guarantee a large freezer section.

Is a small freezer compartment enough for frozen food bought every week?

Not always. UFC-Que Choisir states that a simple freezer compartment is not enough when consumption of frozen food is high. For regular purchases, compare the capacity of a separate freezer compartment instead.

What should you check before buying an integrated fridge?

Check the housing’s exact dimensions, the type of door fitting, the ventilation requirements specified in the manual and compatibility with the kitchen unit. An integrated model should not be chosen based solely on the external dimensions of a freestanding appliance.

Which energy-label information should you compare for a fridge in France?

Since 1 March 2021, the European label for domestic fridges and freezers has used an A to G scale, according to the European Commission. Also compare kWh/year, compartment capacities, noise emissions and noise class; the QR code provides access to detailed model information in EPREL.

Is a multi-door model always better for a family?

No. It can provide plenty of space, but it requires suitable kitchen space and access. UFC-Que Choisir states that an American-style model may require around 1 m of width and 75 to 80 cm of depth, with a weight sometimes exceeding 100 kg. Choose this format only if its size suits your home.
