Who is this choice for?

Households that regularly stock up on frozen food

If you buy in bulk, check the freezer capacity separately from the fridge capacity. Also make sure the appliance will fit in your kitchen.

Households that shop less often and have limited kitchen space

Your available space, an alcove or the delivery route may limit the size of appliance you can choose. The challenge is finding enough freezer space within those dimensions.

Households that only freeze food occasionally

If you mainly keep fresh food and only a few frozen items, a smaller freezer compartment may suit your habits. However, the total capacity alone won’t tell you how much freezer space you’ll have.

Which features should you compare?

Start by estimating how much frozen food you usually keep, then rule out any sizes that won’t fit in your kitchen or along the delivery route. Finally, compare the energy label and noise levels of appliances with enough capacity for your needs.

Feature What to check Who is it for?
Frozen food storage The freezer’s usable capacity, separate from the total capacity, and the layout of the drawers. If I regularly buy large amounts of frozen food, I want to be able to store it without taking up space meant for fresh food. Around 36% of consumers put freezer storage at the top of their list of needs.
Space and installation The appliance’s dimensions, the delivery route and, for an integrated model, the cabinet niche and door system. If my kitchen or access routes are narrow, the stated capacity is no use if the appliance can’t be installed. Around 29% of consumers prioritise a model that fits their kitchen.
Energy consumption and noise kWh/year, energy rating and stated noise level, comparing appliances with suitable, similar capacities. In an open-plan kitchen, I want to consider noise and energy consumption without giving up the storage I need. Around 21% of consumers put these two factors ahead of others.
Occasional freezing The freezer’s net capacity compared with how much frozen food you store at your busiest times. If I mainly buy fresh food, I’d rather not choose a large appliance just for a few frozen items. Around 14% of consumers prioritise fresh food, with only occasional freezing.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Choosing based on total capacity alone

This figure combines spaces that serve different purposes. According to Electrolux and Bosch product specifications, the models mentioned here range from 62 L of freezer capacity for integrated models to 200 L for the Bosch KFN96VPEA multi-door fridge freezer.

Work out how much freezer space you need first, then compare the usable litres in the fridge and freezer separately.

  • Forgetting to check whether a multi-door model will fit through

Dimensions determine more than how much space an appliance takes up in your kitchen: it also has to get through doorways and around corners on the delivery route.

Measure the route and the space where it will go, then check the model’s manual for the clearances needed for installation.

  • Comparing energy consumption without considering capacity

    Annual figures don’t describe equivalent appliances: Electrolux lists 173 kWh/year for the 249 L ENG8CD18S0, while LG lists 426 kWh/year for the 616 L GML8031ST.

First shortlist models with the capacity you need, then compare their kWh/year, energy ratings and stated noise levels.

  • Assuming a water dispenser won’t require any extra installation

The LG GMW765STGJ specifications state that plumbing is required. This requirement doesn’t apply to all multi-door models.

If you choose a model with a water dispenser, check its connection requirements before ordering.

Brands to know for these styles

Bosch

The KFN96VPEA is an example of a freestanding multi-door model to consider if you need plenty of freezer space and have room for a wide appliance.

  • Bosch lists 405 L of fridge capacity, 200 L of freezer capacity, No Frost and a noise level of 38 dB(A) re 1 pW for this model.
  • Its stated dimensions are 1 830 × 905 × 731 mm: check the space available and access routes before choosing this model.

LG

The GML8031ST and GMW765STGJ show the different storage capacities available in the brand’s multi-door range.

  • LG lists 218 L of freezer capacity for the GML8031ST and 246 L for the GMW765STGJ.
  • The GML8031ST measures 908 × 1 772 × 792 mm and uses 426 kWh/year according to LG. The GMW765STGJ specifications state that plumbing is required for its water dispenser.

Hisense

The FMN560BSE is a multi-door model with a MyFreshChoice zone, which Hisense says can be switched between fridge and freezer settings.

  • Hisense lists a total capacity of 609 L, a width of 91,2 cm, 40 dB(A) and No Frost for this model.
  • To check whether it can hold your frozen food supplies, confirm the freezer’s exact net capacity in the full product specifications.

Electrolux

The LNA7CE18S0 and ENG8CD18S0 integrated fridge freezers are worth considering when your kitchen is designed for a built-in appliance rather than a freestanding model.

  • Electrolux lists a total capacity of 249 L for each, including 62 L of freezer space, and a required niche height of 1 780 mm.
  • Compare the 62 L of freezer space with your frozen food shopping, and check the other installation requirements for your chosen model.

Frequently asked questions

What figures should I check if I often store frozen food?

First, check the freezer’s usable capacity, then the fridge capacity: the total capacity doesn’t show how much space is available for each purpose. Next, compare dimensions and kWh/year across models with the capacity you need.

Is an energy label required for a fridge sold in France?

Yes. ADEME says that appliances covered by these regulations must carry an energy label. Use the stated energy consumption, in particular, to compare fridge freezers that meet the same capacity needs.

Do all multi-door fridge freezers need a water connection?

No, it depends on the features and model. LG states that plumbing is required for the GMW765STGJ’s water dispenser. Check the product specifications and installation instructions for the multi-door model you’re considering.
