Which households is it for?

Housemates and households sharing a large weekly shop

The capacity needs to cover the period between shops, distinguishing the litres reserved for fresh food from those intended for frozen food. UFC-Que Choisir recommends not relying on total capacity alone.

Households that eat a lot of frozen food

A genuine freezer compartment with dedicated storage should be prioritised. According to UFC-Que Choisir, a simple freezer box is not enough when a significant proportion of your stock is frozen.

Open-plan or narrow kitchens

Width, depth, door clearance, specified ventilation space and stated noise levels matter just as much as capacity when the appliance is close to your living area.

Buying priorities

First check how the storage is divided, then assess the actual installation space and the information shown on the label of the model you are considering.

Priority What to check Your needs
Fresh and frozen capacities Compare the fridge and freezer litres separately. UFC-Que Choisir uses 100 to 150 L for one person as a guide, followed by 50 L for each additional person; adapt this to your storage habits. I want to be able to put the shopping away straight after buying it without sacrificing fresh food because of a small freezer compartment.
Size and doors Measure the height, width and depth, the delivery route and the door opening. Follow the clearances and airflow requirements specified in the model’s instructions. The capacity must fit in my kitchen and remain practical to use around nearby walls, units and walkways.
Noise Compare the stated dB(A) level and noise class for appliances of a similar size. For an open-plan kitchen, UFC-Que Choisir lists models rated below 40 dB(A) among the quietest. Near a living room or sleeping area, I want an appliance whose stated noise level is suitable for its location.
Energy and model information The European Commission states that the energy label shows the A to G class, kWh/year, storage capacities and noise level. Also check the information linked to the model’s EPREL QR code. I compare annual consumption without losing sight of the genuinely usable capacity, then check the warranty, parts and after-sales service separately.

Mistakes to avoid before buying

  • Choosing total capacity without checking the freezer capacity

Two appliances with the same total capacity can allocate very different amounts of space to frozen food. The freezer may then run out of room despite an overall capacity that appears sufficient.

List your maximum fresh and frozen food stock after shopping, then compare the litres in each compartment on the label and product specifications.

  • Assuming a large model will suit every kitchen

Large-capacity appliances can obstruct walkways, prevent doors from opening fully or complicate installation. UFC-Que Choisir points out that multi-door models can take up a similar amount of space to an American-style fridge freezer.

Measure the installation space, delivery access and door clearance, then follow the installation plan and specified ventilation gaps.

  • Looking only at the energy class

The A to G class does not replace comparing kWh/year, usable capacities and noise. A larger appliance may meet a greater storage need while showing higher annual consumption.

Compare models that meet the same storage requirement using the class, kWh/year, fridge and freezer litres, as well as the noise level.

  • Expecting every fridge freezer to have a repairability index

The list of categories covered by France’s mandatory repairability index does not include fridge freezers, according to the Ministry of the Economy.

Ask about the model’s warranty terms, parts availability and repair arrangements, then consult its technical documents whenever they are available.

Brands to consider based on the format you need

Bosch

Worth considering for freestanding fridge freezers or multi-door models whose technical specifications detail separate capacities, dimensions and noise levels.

  • For the KGN33NSDB, Bosch states 189 L of fridge capacity, 90 L of freezer capacity, 40 dB(A) and dimensions of 175,4 × 61,4 × 66,3 cm.
  • The 279 L usable capacity in this example should be compared with your actual fresh and frozen food stock; these figures do not represent the entire range.

LG

Worth considering when a very large capacity justifies a wide, deep multi-door appliance with separate fresh and frozen food capacities.

  • For the GML8031ST, LG states a total capacity of 616 L, including 398 L for refrigeration and 218 L for freezing.
  • This model is 90,8 cm wide and 79,2 cm deep: its dimensions and 426 kWh/year should be considered alongside your kitchen and household needs.

Electrolux

Worth considering for a built-in or compact appliance when the dimensions of the kitchen housing determine your choice before capacity does.

  • The ETS3LE16S is an example of a 242 L built-in model, with 201 L of fridge capacity and 41 L of freezer capacity, for a 1580 × 560 × 550 mm housing.
  • A 41 L freezer compartment may be too limited for shared weekly shops containing a lot of frozen food.

Frequently asked questions

Which figures on the energy label should I compare?

Compare the A to G energy class, annual consumption in kWh, fridge and freezer capacities, as well as the noise level and its class. The European Commission explains that the QR code may link to the information declared in EPREL for the registered model.

Is total capacity enough for shared weekly shops?

No: the split between fresh and frozen food is crucial. UFC-Que Choisir suggests 100 to 150 L for one person as a guide, followed by 50 L for each additional person, while reminding shoppers that a simple freezer box is not suitable for a large amount of frozen food.

Is a noise level below 40 dB useful in an open-plan kitchen?

It is a useful filter, but it does not guarantee that the appliance will cause no disturbance. UFC-Que Choisir lists models rated below 40 dB(A) among the quietest, while Bosch recommends 37 to 39 dB for an open-plan kitchen or studio flat; check the exact model’s noise figure and class.

Is a French repairability index mandatory for fridge freezers?

No, fridge freezers are not currently among the categories covered by the mandatory repairability index, according to the Ministry of the Economy. Instead, check the warranty, parts availability, repair terms and the manufacturer’s documents.

What should I check before installing a fridge freezer?

Follow the model’s instructions for clearance and door opening. Electrolux specifically recommends allowing air to circulate around the appliance and waiting at least four hours before plugging it in after installation.
