What should you consider before choosing?
Single-door fridge
Worth considering: if your household uses little frozen food or already has another way to store it.
The trade-off: check whether there’s a freezer compartment and how much it holds before relying on this appliance for frozen food.
Fridge-freezer
Worth considering: if you need to store fresh and frozen food in a space around 60 cm wide.
The trade-off: freezer capacity varies by model, even when total capacities are similar.
Multi-door fridge-freezer
Worth considering: if separate storage areas would make it easier to organise your shopping and your kitchen has room for the appliance.
The trade-off: Que Choisir notes that some multi-door models are nearly as heavy and large as American-style fridge-freezers.
Once you’ve chosen a format, compare the space available with the amount of food you actually store. “Large capacity” doesn’t mean there’s a set split between fresh and frozen food.
| Priority |
What to check |
What I need |
| Usable capacity |
Compare the total capacity with the litres allocated to the fridge and freezer. Check the appliance’s dimensions. |
There needs to be enough room for a larger household’s shopping, without choosing a capacity that’s far bigger than our needs. |
| Fresh and frozen food |
Check the two capacities separately, then look at the number and shape of the freezer drawers. |
If we often store frozen food, I don’t want a large total capacity to disguise a freezer that’s too small. |
| Storage |
Check the layout of the doors, shelves and drawers on the specific model. Make sure there’s room for the containers you usually use. |
Everyone should be able to find their food without piling everything up or opening several compartments. |
| Installation |
Measure the available width, height and depth, door clearance and delivery access. Check the manufacturer’s installation instructions. |
A spacious appliance is only right for me if it can get into the kitchen and the doors can open properly. |
| Everyday use |
Compare energy ratings from A to G and annual energy consumption across appliances of a similar format and capacity. Check the noise level in dB and which areas are covered by No Frost. |
Noise matters in an open-plan kitchen too. If I want to avoid manual defrosting, I’ll check whether the stated function applies to the freezer. |
Which branded models should you compare?
These models illustrate different formats and capacity splits to consider. The features listed apply to the named models, not every appliance from that brand.
Bosch
The freestanding KGN36VLED fridge-freezer is worth considering if you’re looking for a split between fresh and frozen food in a width of 600 mm.
- Bosch lists 237 L of fridge capacity, 89 L of freezer capacity, a noise level of 39 dB and dimensions of 1860 × 600 × 660 mm for this model.
- The stated Total NoFrost feature applies to this model. Check the features and dimensions of any other model you’re considering.
Samsung
The RB34T600CSA is an example of a fridge-freezer to consider when depth matters as much as capacity.
- Samsung France lists a capacity of 340 L and a depth of 600 mm for this model.
- Check the specification for the version on offer and all its installation clearances, not just the appliance’s depth.
Haier
Haier’s French range includes multi-door models worth considering if separate storage areas suit your household’s habits.
- Haier France lists No Frost models with D or E energy ratings, depending on the model. Darty gives the HFR5719ENMG a capacity of 446 L, including 306 L for the fridge and 140 L for the freezer.
- Darty also lists an E rating and 298 kWh/year for this model. Compare these figures with those of appliances of a similar capacity.
LG
The GBP20DSQFS fridge-freezer is another example to consider when freezer space and performance are important to your choice.
- LG France lists a total capacity of 343 L, including 93 L for the freezer, as well as Total No Frost and a freezing capacity of 10 kg/24 h for this model.
- Check the energy label for the specific model on offer before comparing its consumption with another appliance.

Frequently asked questions
What capacity should I look for in a fridge-freezer for a larger household?
Start with the food you actually store, rather than a fixed number of litres per person. Boulanger lists fridge-freezers from 344 to 390 L, while Darty gives the Haier HFR5719ENMG multi-door model a capacity of 446 L. Above all, compare the fridge and freezer capacities of each model.
Is a multi-door model always better for a larger household?
No. Separate compartments are useful if your household needs them and your kitchen has room for the appliance. Que Choisir notes that some multi-door models are similar in weight and size to American-style fridge-freezers. Remember to measure the delivery route too.
How do I read a fridge-freezer’s energy label?
Compare the A to G rating with annual energy consumption, then consider both figures alongside the appliance’s capacity and format. Your Europe, a European Union service, says the label must be displayed at the point of sale, including online. The same rating alone isn’t enough to compare appliances of very different sizes.
Does No Frost mean you never have to defrost the appliance manually?
Check which areas are covered in the model’s specifications. No Frost and Total No Frost don’t necessarily refer to the same parts of the appliance. If you want to avoid defrosting the freezer, make sure the stated feature applies to that compartment.
Does a multi-door model with a water dispenser need a water supply?
Only if the model you choose requires one. Que Choisir says that some door-mounted dispensers need a water connection. Check the instructions and specifications for the fridge-freezer you’re considering before deciding where to put it.
