Which households is it for?

Households that cook and shop for several days at a time

You need to keep fresh and frozen food clearly separate and check what you already have before doing another shop. Your choice should be based on the useful capacity in each compartment, how often you shop and how easy it is to organise your food.

Households with a large stock of frozen food

You buy or prepare frozen food in large quantities and the freezer compartment of a fridge freezer stays full. Compare a fridge freezer with a large freezer compartment, a multi-door model, or an upright or chest freezer, depending on the space available and how much organisation you need.

Households with a restricted kitchen or an integrated appliance

You need to choose an appliance that fits the available space, width and genuinely accessible capacity. Measure the installation space before comparing capacities: integrated fridge freezers often offer less freezer storage than some larger freestanding models.

Buying priorities

Start by dividing the capacity between fresh and frozen food, then check the storage layout, cooling system and compatibility with your kitchen.

Priority What to check Your needs
Fresh and frozen capacity Compare the fridge and freezer capacities separately. Check these figures on the energy label or product information rather than relying on the total capacity alone. I want to store several days’ worth of fresh and frozen food without running out of space in either compartment.
Organisation and visibility Look at the drawers, shelves, bins and separate compartments. Check that the door opening and access to each area suit the packaging you use. I want to see quickly what I have already bought, organise different categories and avoid buying duplicates when I shop.
Cooling and frost A No Frost system reduces frost and the need for defrosting. Also check whether you can control the temperature; Anses recommends between 0 and +4 °C at the coldest point of the fridge. Between large shops, I want to keep food in good condition without losing useful space to frost.
Size and practicality Compare annual energy consumption between appliances of a similar size. Measure the width, depth, ventilation clearances, delivery route and, if necessary, the water connection. I am looking for genuinely useful extra capacity without choosing an appliance that cannot be installed in my kitchen.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Comparing only the total capacity

Two appliances with a similar total capacity can offer very different freezer capacities. A large total capacity therefore does not guarantee enough frozen-food storage for planned shopping.

Note the fridge and freezer capacities separately from the energy label or product information, then compare them with your usual purchases.

  • Buying a large appliance without measuring the kitchen

A large fridge freezer or multi-door model may require a width, depth, ventilation clearance or water connection that is incompatible with your installation. The Samsung RF65DG960ESL, for example, is 91.2 cm wide and requires a water connection for its dispenser.

Measure the installation space, delivery route, door-opening clearance and necessary gaps before placing your order. Also check any connection requirements.

  • Assuming No Frost completely solves food waste

Fan-assisted cooling reduces frost and helps distribute cold air, but it does not keep track of dates or duplicate purchases. Food exposed to circulating cold air must also be protected from drying out.

Organise food by category, place items that need using first at the front, and cover food that is sensitive to fan-assisted cooling.

  • Adding a separate freezer without an ongoing need

A chest or upright freezer significantly increases storage, but also takes up more space and uses more energy when much of its capacity remains unused.

Only add an extra freezer if frozen food, batch cooking or seasonal requirements regularly fill the available space.

Its annual energy consumption is added to that of your existing fridge. Gifam cites 354 kWh/year as the average consumption of a freezer in a French household, based on an ADEME measurement campaign carried out in June 2016.

A guide to the brands

Bosch

In France, Bosch offers integrated and freestanding fridge freezers whose product information details separate capacities, dimensions, energy class and noise level.

  • The models mentioned illustrate how capacities vary significantly by format: 184 L of fridge space and 76 L of freezer space for the integrated KIN865SE0, compared with 479 L and 152 L for the freestanding KGN86VIEA.
  • These figures apply to these specific models. Wider appliances require a kitchen that can accommodate their dimensions.

Samsung

In France, Samsung sells large-capacity fridge freezers and multi-door models which, depending on the model, offer connected features and energy-use monitoring.

  • For the RB38C7B6AS9/EF, Samsung states that certain SmartThings features can help monitor energy consumption.
  • According to Samsung, a Wi-Fi connection and Samsung account are required, and results vary according to usage conditions and habits. These features do not replace manually organising and monitoring your supplies.

Electrolux

Electrolux offers integrated fridge freezers for fitted kitchens, with technical information specifying the installation space, capacities, cooling system and internal layout.

  • The ENS3LE18S is designed for a 1,780 mm installation space and offers a total capacity of 271 L, including 73 L of freezer space, with two drawers and a Low Frost system.
  • This configuration depends on a compatible installation space and offers less frozen-food storage than the larger freestanding appliances mentioned.

Haier

In France, Haier sells high-capacity multi-door fridges with multiple compartments.

  • Haier presents its four- and five-door multi-door models as appliances focused on capacity and organisation.
  • This is the brand’s own presentation: for the model you choose, check the capacity of each compartment, width and annual energy consumption.

Frequently asked questions

Does a larger fridge automatically reduce food waste?

No. ADEME states that around 25 kg of food is thrown away per person in France each year and recommends, among other things, managing shopping and supplies more effectively. A larger appliance provides more space, but it does not replace taking stock of what you have or organising food so that items to be used first are clearly visible.

What temperature should a fridge be able to maintain?

Anses states that the ideal temperature is between 0 and +4 °C at the coldest point. Check whether the appliance has an indicator or allows you to monitor the temperature, and avoid overfilling it so that cold air can circulate properly.

Is No Frost enough to keep food fresher for longer?

No. According to Gifam, fan-assisted cooling or No Frost distributes cold air evenly and prevents frost, reducing the need for manual defrosting. You still need to cover food, as this type of cooling can dry it out if it is not protected.

How should you dispose of an old fridge when replacing it in France?

The ‘1-for-1’ take-back scheme allows you to return a used product when buying a new product of the same type, subject to the arrangements applicable to the retailer and product. For a refrigeration appliance, also check the repair and take-back options available before replacing it.
