Which households is it for?

Households that cook several times a week

You prepare meals, keep leftovers and buy both fresh and frozen food: look for a clear division between fridge and freezer, easy-to-organise storage areas and an adjustable temperature setting. Anses and UFC-Que Choisir highlight the importance of good organisation and suitable capacity.

Households that shop weekly or in bulk

If the appliance fills up between shopping trips, compare the total usable capacity as well as its width, depth, height and freezer capacity. A larger model only makes sense if your kitchen, access routes and everyday needs justify it.

Open-plan kitchens or restricted spaces

Compare the full dimensions, stated noise level and internal capacity. A connected appliance or one with a large display cannot replace suitable storage or temperature control.

Buying priorities

Small freezer compartment

Consider it: if you only buy frozen food occasionally and available space is very limited.

Be prepared to accept: less separation between fresh and frozen supplies, with the freezer filling up more quickly when storing prepared meals.

Fridge freezer

Choose it: to regularly store fresh food, leftovers and a supply of frozen food in one appliance.

Check: how much space is actually allocated to the freezer, particularly if you do large shops or batch cooking.

Large capacity or separate freezer

Choose it: when batch cooking and frozen-food supplies consistently exceed the capacity of a fridge freezer.

Plan for: a larger footprint, more demanding delivery access and careful comparison of the energy label.

Priority What to check Your needs
Capacity and layout Compare the fridge and freezer capacities in litres separately. Also check the format, dimensions H × W × D and the space needed for delivery access. I want to store my shopping, prepared meals and frozen food without paying for the footprint of capacity I will not use.
Temperature and consistency Prefer a clearly readable temperature control; an alarm can be useful if the door is opened frequently. Check the precise model for fan-assisted cooling or No Frost functions. I want to be able to control the temperature without assuming that technology replaces proper settings and organisation. Anses recommends between 0 and +4 °C at the coldest point.
Internal organisation Examine the adjustable shelves, drawers, door balconies and freezer layout. Keep air-distribution areas clear when loading the appliance. I need to separate fresh food, prepared meals and packaging without overloading the shelves. Anses recommends not overfilling the fridge to encourage cold-air circulation.
Energy and noise Compare the A to G rating, annual kWh, compartment capacities and noise level between appliances of a similar size. I want to assess the appliance as a whole for everyday use, rather than choosing based on an energy rating or isolated claim. The European Commission states that this information appears on the energy label.

Mistakes to avoid before buying

  • Choosing solely by the advertised total capacity

Two appliances with the same total capacity can offer very different amounts of fridge and freezer space. For prepared meals and frozen food, the freezer capacity in litres, drawers and access to the food matter just as much as the total.

Make a list of what you store over a week, then compare the capacities of both compartments separately, along with the dimensions and door opening.

  • Treating No Frost or Multi-Flow as a food-safety guarantee

Anses states that the cold chain depends on temperature, temperature consistency, how full the appliance is, how food is arranged and how often the door is opened. A cooling function alone therefore cannot guarantee the right storage conditions.

Choose an easy-to-understand setting and, if useful to you, an alarm. Then check the temperature at the coldest point, avoid overfilling the appliance and place perishable food in the recommended zone.

  • Forgetting width, depth, height and delivery access

A large appliance may require considerably more width than a standard fridge freezer, while some fridge freezers are over 2 m tall. The dimensions of the space itself are not always enough to confirm delivery and installation.

Measure the available space, the ventilation clearances requested by the manufacturer, the door opening, as well as corridors, stairs, lifts and entrance doors.

An installation that is not possible or requires specialist handling may create practical difficulties or additional charges, depending on the retailer.

  • Comparing energy ratings without checking annual kWh

The A to G rating is useful, but the label also includes annual consumption, capacities and noise. Comparing only the rating letter between two very different sizes can hide the effect of capacity on everyday use.

Compare appliances with similar capacities and formats by looking at the rating, kWh/year, litres in each compartment and stated noise level together.

Relevant brands at a glance

Bosch

Bosch’s freestanding fridge-freezer range lets you compare standard-width models with 70 cm-wide options for organising fresh and frozen food.

  • For the KGN39VLCT and KGN49AIBT, Bosch states separate capacities for the fridge and freezer, along with No Frost functions or separate cooling circuits, depending on the model.
  • Capacity, dimensions, noise level and energy rating must be checked for the exact model: they do not characterise the brand as a whole.

Liebherr

Liebherr offers large-capacity fridge freezers for households planning to store larger amounts of fresh and frozen food.

  • The CNsfa 7723 is stated to offer 485 L of capacity, a width of 74.7 cm and a noise level of 34 dB. Liebherr presents EasyFresh, NoFrost and DuoCooling as features for organisation and separate cooling circuits.
  • This format requires you to confirm the available width, delivery access and whether you will genuinely use the capacity; the stated storage benefits are manufacturer claims.

Samsung

Samsung offers high-capacity fridge freezers in a width close to 60 cm, making them suitable for kitchens where this constraint is decisive.

  • The RL38C600CWW/EF is stated to offer 390 L of capacity and a width of 595 mm, with a C rating. Samsung presents SpaceMax and Multi-Flow as solutions for maximising internal space and distributing cold air.
  • Connected features and AI Energy mode depend, among other things, on Wi-Fi, a Samsung account and the conditions of use; they do not guarantee savings.

Frequently asked questions

What temperature should you aim for in the fridge?

Anses recommends a temperature between 0 and +4 °C at the coldest point. An appliance with fan-assisted cooling, a display or an alarm cannot guarantee this temperature on its own: check the setting, avoid overfilling the appliance and place perishable food in the coldest zone.

Does fan-assisted cooling or No Frost make organisation less important?

No. Depending on the model, these functions can help distribute air or reduce frost, but Anses still recommends not overloading the fridge to encourage cold-air circulation. Good internal organisation is therefore still essential.

What does a fridge-freezer energy label show?

For applicable appliances sold in the European Union, the European Commission states that the label shows an A to G scale, annual consumption in kWh, compartment capacities and airborne noise emissions. The QR code may provide access to additional information about the model in EPREL.

Should you buy an extended warranty?

First compare the retailer’s offer with your existing rights. According to economie.gouv.fr, the legal guarantee of conformity is compulsory for goods sold by a professional to a private individual; an extended warranty is only worth considering if its services, exclusions, duration and claims process offer a tangible benefit for your circumstances.

Is a very large fridge always better for frequent cooking?

No. It is suitable when large shops and frozen-food storage are genuinely regular requirements. Otherwise, a large format may take up more space, be harder to install and consume more energy, so compare it carefully with a fridge freezer of a suitable capacity.
