Which households is it for?

Households shopping for a week or more

Allow enough fresh-food capacity for several days’ shopping, plus a proper freezer compartment if frozen food is part of your regular shop. Shopping frequency and the need for freezing are both criteria highlighted by UFC-Que Choisir.

Families storing lots of frozen food

Compare freezer capacity separately from the total capacity. A multi-door model or two separate appliances may be a better fit when the freezer space typically allocated in a fridge freezer is no longer enough.

Compact kitchens or open-plan living spaces

Measure the available space, access routes and ventilation clearances first, then check the stated noise level. Refrigeration appliances run continuously, while multi-door models can be wide and heavy, as ADEME and UFC-Que Choisir point out.

What to check before buying

Priority What to check Your needs
Usable capacity Compare the usable litres of the fridge and freezer separately. For a fridge freezer, also look at the split between fresh and frozen food, as well as the drawers and shelves. I want to store the shopping between trips without paying for capacity I do not need or running out of room for frozen food. UFC-Que Choisir recommends 100 to 150 L for one person, then 50 L for each additional person.
Positioning Measure the width, height, depth, delivery access and door-opening clearance. Check the clearances required in the instructions; UFC-Que Choisir recommends at least 10 cm above and behind the appliance unless the manufacturer specifies otherwise. My appliance needs to fit through the access routes, open without obstructing movement and remain properly ventilated. An American-style model may require around 1 m of width, compared with 70 cm for a standard model, according to UFC-Que Choisir.
Energy consumption Compare the kWh/year figures for appliances of a similar type and capacity, then check the energy class from A to G. Also consider additional features in relation to how you will actually use them. I want to limit the consumption of an appliance that remains powered continuously. ADEME points out that size and extra features can increase your bills; the energy label helps you compare products in the same category.
Noise and maintenance Check the stated noise level in dB(A), the defrosting system and the care instructions. Also check the temperature settings and the condition of the seals. In an open-plan kitchen, I want to minimise noise and avoid difficult maintenance. UFC-Que Choisir recommends setting the fridge between 4 °C and 5 °C, and the freezer to -18 °C.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Choosing the total capacity without checking the freezer

A standard fridge freezer often divides its capacity into around two-thirds refrigeration and one-third freezing. A high total capacity can therefore still leave little room for frozen food.

Make a note of a typical week’s fresh, frozen and prepared-food shopping, then compare the usable litres in each compartment rather than looking only at the advertised total capacity.

  • Installing a large appliance without measuring everything

Multi-door models can be similar in size and weight to an American-style fridge freezer. An overly tight installation can make the appliance harder to use and restrict airflow.

Measure the delivery route, recess, door opening and the clearances specified in the instructions. Unless stated otherwise, UFC-Que Choisir recommends leaving at least 10 cm above and behind the appliance.

  • Choosing water or ice options without considering the requirements

Some multi-door models need a water connection for the dispenser, while these features also add installation and maintenance requirements.

Choose these options if they suit your regular usage, then check the required water connection, associated maintenance and the exact model’s annual energy consumption.

  • Overlooking maintenance and settings

An appliance with poor ventilation, excess ice or worn seals may consume more energy. Operating temperatures also affect how well food is preserved.

Set the fridge between 4 °C and 5 °C and the freezer to -18 °C. Clean the rear grille regularly, check the seals and defrost appliances that require it.

Brand guide

Bosch

In France, Bosch offers fridge freezers, multi-door models and side-by-side appliances, with features such as NoFrost, freshness compartments and different energy and noise classes depending on the model.

  • According to Bosch Home Appliances France, the KGN39AIAU features Total NoFrost, VitaFresh XXL, energy class A and noise class A at under 29 dB.
  • These specifications apply to this particular model: check the usable capacity, dimensions, noise level and class of the model you choose.

Samsung

Samsung is particularly present in the multi-door fridge freezer market, with large-capacity models and features that vary by reference, such as fan-assisted cooling, a carafe or an ice maker.

  • According to Samsung France, the RF24BB620EB1EF offers 674 L and two separate cooling systems for the fridge and freezer.
  • A large capacity means comparing the overall size, energy consumption and internal layout with a more compact fridge freezer.

Liebherr

Liebherr offers fridge freezers and freezers equipped with NoFrost, a feature worth considering when freezer capacity and frost management are important factors in your choice.

  • Liebherr states that its NoFrost system is available in fridge freezers and freezers.
  • Always check that the system applies to the exact model, along with its capacity, noise level, energy class and dimensions.

Frequently asked questions

How much capacity should you allow for a household shop?

UFC-Que Choisir recommends allowing 100 to 150 L for one person, then around 50 L for each additional person. Adjust this guide according to how often you shop, how many prepared meals you buy and, above all, the amount of frozen food you store; always compare the fridge and freezer capacities separately.

Is a small freezer compartment enough for frozen food?

Only when frozen food is occasional and limited in volume. For regular or larger shops, UFC-Que Choisir states that a small freezer compartment is not sufficient: choose a fridge freezer with a proper freezer compartment or consider a separate freezer.

What should you look for on the energy label?

Compare the kWh/year figure, energy class from A to G, noise level and compartment capacities between appliances of the same type and with a similar capacity. The French authorities explain that the energy label allows you to compare products in the same category using standardised information, particularly on energy consumption and noise.

What temperature should you set for fresh and frozen food?

UFC-Que Choisir recommends setting the fridge between 4 °C and 5 °C, and the freezer to -18 °C. Check the actual temperature, particularly after delivery or after loading a large amount of food, and avoid setting it colder than necessary.
