Key selection criteria
Start with the available space and the capacity you need, then compare the energy label and noise level between appliances of a similar format.
| Priority |
What to check |
Your needs |
| Usable capacity |
Compare the fridge and freezer capacities separately. Que Choisir suggests starting at 100 to 150 L for one person, followed by 50 L per additional person; adapt this to your shopping habits and frozen-food needs. |
I want to avoid an appliance that is too small between shops without taking up unnecessary space in a small kitchen. The amount of room needed for frozen food can affect the format required. |
| Installation |
Measure the height, width, depth, door clearance and delivery access routes. For an integrated model, check the housing dimensions, ventilation and the type of door fixing specified by the manufacturer. |
My fridge freezer must fit into the designated space and remain practical to use every day. In a fitted kitchen, compatibility with the housing and cabinet door matters just as much as capacity. |
| Energy and noise |
Compare the A to G rating, kWh/year, capacities and noise level between appliances intended for the same use. The European Commission states that the label displays this information; ADEME points out that these appliances run continuously. |
In an open-plan kitchen, I consider the stated noise level just as important as capacity. I also prefer to compare the annual consumption of similarly sized appliances rather than looking only at their energy rating. |

Frequently asked questions
How much capacity should you allow for one person or a larger household?
As a starting point, Que Choisir recommends 100 to 150 L for one person, followed by 50 L per additional person. Adjust this guide if you do large shops, cook in advance or store lots of frozen food, comparing the fridge and freezer capacities separately.
What measurements should you take before buying a fridge freezer?
Measure the height, width and depth of the space, delivery access routes, door opening and the ventilation clearance specified in the instructions. For a large multi-door model, Bosch also advises checking the dimensions with the doors open and closed; its guide mentions at least 5 cm at the sides and above, without replacing the instructions for your chosen model.
What should you check before replacing an integrated fridge freezer?
Measure the housing and check the fixing system for the existing door. Bosch states that compatible dimensions with the previous installation must be retained and that the type of hinges or fixing should be checked so the cabinet door can be fitted correctly.
Can the energy label be used to compare two fridge freezers?
Yes, provided you compare appliances with the same format and a similar usable capacity. Since 1 March 2021, the European Commission states that the label runs from A to G and displays, among other details, annual consumption in kWh, compartment capacities and noise level; the QR code links to detailed EPREL information.
Does a multi-door model with water and ice need a water connection?
It depends on the version. Bosch explains that a water and ice dispenser may require a water connection, while some models with an integrated reservoir do not need to be plumbed in; check the model’s technical information rather than assuming that all multi-door models require the same installation.
