Which households is it for?

Households that plan meals for the week

If you prepare meals in advance, keep opened food and do a weekly shop, choose your fridge capacity first, followed by freezer space suited to your prepared portions and frozen food. UFC-Que Choisir recommends this approach to sizing.

Small households that freeze little

For a single person or couple who regularly buy fresh food and keep only a small amount of frozen food, a suitably sized fridge with a small freezer compartment can help you avoid buying an unnecessarily large appliance. UFC-Que Choisir recommends matching capacity to the number of people and your shopping habits.

Families and bulk shoppers

If you build up food reserves, freeze food frequently or buy in bulk, compare a fridge freezer with a large freezer compartment against a separate fridge and freezer combination. Consider drawer access, available space and the total annual energy consumption.

Buying priorities

First choose the most useful balance between fresh and frozen food, then check energy consumption, installation requirements and everyday ease of access.

Priority What to check Your needs
Separate capacities Allow 100 to 150 L of fridge space for one person, then around 50 L for each additional person, according to UFC-Que Choisir. Compare the freezer capacity and external dimensions separately. I want to keep fresh food without running out of room for prepared portions or frozen food. My weekly shops and bulk purchases may justify extra capacity.
Continuous energy use Compare kWh/year between appliances with similar capacities and configurations. The European Union energy label also shows compartment capacities and noise levels. I want a capacity that suits how I use the appliance, without relying solely on the energy class letter. ADEME reminds us that fridges and freezers run continuously.
Installation Check the climate class, niche or freestanding dimensions, ventilation and door opening. For a freestanding appliance, UFC-Que Choisir recommends at least 5 cm at the sides and behind, as well as 10 cm above. My appliance must operate properly in the actual temperature of my kitchen, cellar or garage, while leaving enough room for the doors and drawers.
Access to stored food Compare drawers, shelves, access to the back of the freezer and defrosting requirements. A chest freezer can offer considerable capacity, while an upright model generally makes it easier to organise food in drawers. I want to find stored food easily and use up my reserves without leaving products forgotten at the back of the freezer.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Choosing the total capacity without separating fresh and frozen food

Two appliances with a similar total capacity can offer very different layouts. A household that batch-cooks may run out of freezer space despite having a large overall capacity.

Define your needs for fresh food and for frozen food or prepared portions separately, then check both capacities on the energy label and product details.

  • Estimating energy consumption from the energy class alone

The capacity and features affect the consumption of appliances that run continuously. The class letter alone is therefore not enough to compare different configurations or capacities.

Compare the kWh/year of models of the same type and with similar capacities. If you want to estimate the annual cost, apply your own kWh tariff.

ADEME publishes indicative figures based on a tariff of 0,20 €/kWh; these do not represent a guaranteed cost for a specific model or contract.

  • Installing the appliance without checking the climate class and ventilation

A room that is too hot or too cold, combined with insufficient ventilation, can affect performance. Requirements differ between freestanding and integrated appliances.

Measure the niche and clearances before ordering, keep the appliance away from heat sources and check that its climate range covers the room temperature all year round.

  • Overlooking freezer organisation

A chest freezer can provide plenty of capacity but make food at the bottom harder to reach. An upright freezer makes it easier to organise food in drawers, provided those drawers can be removed in their installed position.

Before prioritising litres, check that the doors open fully, the drawers can be removed and the layout suits the way you organise food according to how quickly it is used.

Brand guide

Bosch

A range of freestanding and integrated fridge freezers worth considering if you are looking for detailed specifications covering separate capacities, noise, dimensions and No Frost options.

  • For the freestanding KGN36VWED-B, Bosch specifies 237 L of fridge space, 89 L of freezer space, 39 dB and Total No Frost.
  • These figures apply to this specific model; the integrated KIN86SFE0-B has a different capacity split, with 184 L and 76 L.

Beko

The range includes compact single-door appliances, freestanding fridge freezers and models with a wide climate range, depending on the model.

  • Beko lists the TSE1504FN with 128 L of fridge space, 90 kWh/year and an SN-ST climate class.
  • The B5RCNE405HXB fridge freezer has a different capacity split, with 249 L of fridge space and 106 L of freezer space; check the capacities of each model individually.

LG

A range of large-capacity fridge freezers in a standard width, with air circulation or connected control features depending on the model.

  • LG presents the GBBS322APY with Multi Air Flow, Door Cooling+ and an advertised noise level of 29 dB.
  • For this model, LG requires 4 mm of side clearance for the door to operate. Connected features do not replace comparing kWh/year.

Samsung

A range of high-capacity fridge freezers in a standard width, useful when you need more freezer space than many compact fridge freezers provide.

  • Samsung presents the RB38C600ESA/EF with 276 L of fridge space, 114 L of freezer space, 35 dB and No Frost.
  • According to Samsung, AI Energy mode depends on an eligible model, Wi-Fi, activation and usage habits; always compare kWh/year between models.

Frequently asked questions

How can I estimate the fridge capacity I need?

As a starting point, UFC-Que Choisir recommends an average of 100 to 150 L for one person, followed by around 50 L for each additional person. Increase this baseline for weekly shops, batch cooking or a large amount of fresh food, and check the freezer capacity separately.

Should I choose a fridge freezer or two separate appliances?

Choose a fridge freezer if you need a fridge and freezer in the same place every day. Two separate appliances may be suitable if your freezing needs are very different from the layout offered by a fridge freezer and you have enough space, sockets and ventilation, with an acceptable total energy consumption.

Is the energy class enough to compare two models?

No. The European Union energy label also shows kWh/year, net fridge and freezer capacities, and noise levels. Above all, compare kWh/year between appliances with similar capacities and configurations, as recommended by ADEME.

Can I install a fridge in a garage or cellar?

Yes, but only if the actual room temperature remains within the model’s climate class range. Bosch states, for example, that an N class covers 16 to 32 °C, while an SN-T class covers 10 to 43 °C; check the rating plate and manual for the model you choose.

What ventilation should I allow for a freestanding or integrated appliance?

For a freestanding appliance, UFC-Que Choisir recommends at least 5 cm at the sides and behind, as well as 10 cm above. For an integrated appliance, the niche measurements and ventilation specified in the manufacturer’s manual take priority over any general rule.
