Who is it for?

Solo occupant sleeping near the fridge

Your bed or sofa bed is in the same room as the fridge, and you want to minimise humming, vibrations and noticeable cycles at night. Compare the dB(A) rating and acoustic class, then look for listening tests where possible: Que Choisir points out that the figure on the label is not enough to describe the full impact of noise.

Remote worker in a studio flat or open-plan kitchen

You work within a few metres of the appliance and want less intrusive background noise without sacrificing useful storage. Your choice should take into account the stated noise level, capacity, cooling system and the actual depth once the appliance is installed.

Tenant with very limited space

You need to position the fridge under a worktop, inside a housing unit or in a narrow passageway. A compact model may be enough if its capacity suits your habits; an integrated model, however, requires a housing unit, plinth and ventilation compatible with the chosen model.

Buying priorities

Quiet-rated freestanding fridge freezer

Worth considering: if you need a separate freezer and more capacity than a compact appliance can offer.

Watch out for: a low stated figure alone does not tell you about vibrations or compressor start-up, and fridge freezers can be tall and deep.

Compact fridge or table-top model

Worth considering: if space or your food-storage needs are limited.

Be prepared for: lower capacity and sometimes a small freezer compartment instead of a separate freezer.

Integrated fridge freezer

Worth considering: only if your studio already has a housing unit whose dimensions match the model.

Check: ventilation, levelling and the cabinet requirements before placing your order.

Priority What to check Your needs
Perceived noise Compare the dB(A) ratings and acoustic class; also look for tests or reviews that detail humming, vibrations and cycles. Check that the appliance is level and that air can circulate. I want to be able to sleep or work without a compressor cycle becoming too intrusive. Que Choisir says that appliances with similar stated levels can sound very different when listened to.
Capacity and footprint Compare fridge and freezer capacities separately, then note the height, width, depth, door opening and delivery access. My shopping needs to fit without turning the room into a cluttered kitchen. Que Choisir gives 100 to 150 L as a useful capacity guide for one person, to be adjusted depending on frozen food and how often you shop.
Cooling system Identify whether the specific model uses static, fan-assisted or ventilated/No Frost cooling. Also check the freezer’s defrosting requirements. I prefer maintenance that fits around my everyday routine. No Frost can help reduce ice build-up, but this technology alone cannot predict the noise level.
Installation For an integrated model, check the exact housing-unit dimensions, plinth and air inlets and outlets. Read the manual before deciding where to install it. The fridge must fit properly without being pushed against a wall or enclosed in an unsuitable cabinet. Bosch recommends in its FAQ a ventilation area of at least 200 cm² behind and beneath the appliance.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Buying based solely on the dB figure

The same stated noise level does not necessarily cause the same level of disturbance. Vibrations, sound frequency and compressor start-up can be more noticeable in a room where you sleep.

Use the dB(A) rating and acoustic class to rule out certain models, then prioritise reviews describing humming, vibrations and cycles when the bed or desk is nearby.

  • Choosing an integrated model before measuring the housing unit and ventilation

Housing-unit and ventilation requirements vary between models. Installing an appliance in a space that is too small may prevent a compliant installation and affect its operation.

Measure the height, width, depth, plinth, air intake and outlet before ordering, then compare them with the manual for the exact model.

An incompatible housing unit may require cabinet modifications, replacement of the appliance or another installation visit.

  • Choosing a table-top model when you need a proper freezer

A compact model frees up space, but its freezer may be limited and may not replace a separate freezer compartment. Storing frozen food and doing a weekly shop can then become more difficult.

Before prioritising the format, assess the space you need for your usual shopping and frozen products, then compare the fridge and freezer capacities.

  • Confusing a commercial warranty with your legal rights

Paid additional cover may offer separate services, but it does not replace the protections provided when buying from a professional retailer.

Keep the product details, proof of purchase and delivery or installation terms, then read the exclusions before taking out an extended warranty.

Paid extended cover may add services, but it does not replace the legal guarantee of conformity applicable in France.

Brand guide

Bosch

A useful freestanding and integrated range for comparing fridge freezers with low stated noise levels and built-in appliances.

  • Bosch states 29 dB(A), acoustic class A, 260 L of fridge capacity and 103 L of freezer capacity for the KGN39AIAU; these are manufacturer specifications.
  • The KGN39EXCF is stated at 35 dB(A), with the same capacities listed by Bosch.
  • These figures make an initial comparison easier, but they do not replace an assessment of the noise actually perceived in a studio flat.

Electrolux

A brand to consider for a studio flat that already has a compatible tall housing unit or integrated installation space.

  • According to Electrolux, the ENG8CD18S requires a 1780 × 560 × 550 mm housing unit and offers 249 L in total, including 62 L of freezer capacity.
  • According to the manufacturer’s product details, this model combines fan-assisted cooling in the fridge with No Frost in the freezer.
  • The ENS3LE18S, with the same housing-unit height, uses a LowFrost static-cooling system and requires manual freezer defrosting.

Miele

An integrated option to explore if your cabinetry is compatible and you are looking for a 178 cm housing-unit fridge freezer.

  • Miele presents the KFN 7774 B as an integrated fridge freezer for a 178 cm housing unit, with PerfectFresh Active, DynaCool and NoFrost.
  • Check the product details and manual for the model’s noise level and required clearances before buying.

Frequently asked questions

Will a fridge rated at 35 dB necessarily be quiet in a studio flat?

No. The stated dB(A) rating is useful for comparing appliances, but it does not fully describe how intrusive the noise will be: sound frequency, vibrations and cycles matter too. Que Choisir notes that appliances advertised at the same level can receive different listening-test assessments, so look for tests or reviews that describe the type of noise.

What noise level should I aim for near a bed or desk?

Que Choisir says that the quietest fridges are advertised at under 40 dB(A). Use this threshold as an initial filter, then compare the acoustic class, dimensions and, where possible, the noise during operating cycles: it does not guarantee absolute silence.

Is No Frost preferable in a studio flat?

No Frost may be suitable if you want to reduce ice build-up and freezer maintenance. However, it does not mean that an appliance will be quieter: compare the noise level and acoustic class of the specific model.

Can I install an integrated model in any housing unit?

No. Check the housing-unit dimensions, ventilation and levelling requirements specified for the model. Bosch recommends in its FAQ a ventilation space of at least 200 cm² behind and beneath the fridge; the Electrolux ENG8CD18S, for example, requires a 1780 × 560 × 550 mm housing unit.

Should I plug the fridge in immediately after delivery?

Electrolux recommends waiting at least four hours before plugging it in, allowing the oil to return to the compressor. Follow the instructions for the model you bought if they specify different guidance.
