Buying priorities
Table-top
Choose this if: the fridge needs to fit under a worktop and you shop frequently.
Be prepared for: less capacity and a small freezer compartment, where one is included.
Single-door
Choose this if: you mainly store fresh food and have few or no frozen items.
Be prepared for: no integrated freezer or a taller appliance, depending on the capacity you need.
Compact fridge freezer
Choose this if: a separate freezer compartment is genuinely part of your usual shopping habits.
Be prepared for: more height and installation space than with a table-top fridge.
Start with the installation requirements, then compare the capacity of each compartment, noise levels and the energy label between appliances of a similar format. The guidelines below draw on recommendations from Que Choisir, Whirlpool France’s instructions and regulated European Union information.

What to check |
Your needs |
| Footprint and door |
Measure the height, width and depth, including handles, skirting boards and sockets. Add the door opening clearance and the gaps specified in the instructions; Whirlpool France recommends 5 cm above and 10 cm behind its freestanding appliances. |
I want to open the drawers and shelves without blocking the walkway or hitting a wall or nearby unit. |
| Usable capacity |
Compare the total capacity and the capacity of each compartment. Que Choisir recommends 100 to 150 L for one person; check separately how much space is available for frozen food. |
My shopping needs to last between shops without installing an oversized appliance in a small kitchen. |
| Noise |
Use the dB(A) figure and airborne acoustical noise emission class to compare like-for-like specifications. Also check the manufacturer’s levelling requirements, as vibrations and the type of noise matter too. |
The fridge is close to the bed, sofa or dining area: I want an initial acoustic filter, not a promise of silence. |
| Energy consumption |
Compare kWh/year between models with a similar capacity and configuration. Read the energy class alongside the capacity, noise level and climate class shown on the label. |
I want to understand the stated consumption without directly comparing two appliances with very different capacities. |

Frequently asked questions
What measurements should you take before ordering a fridge for a studio flat?
Measure the height, width and depth of the space, then add the door opening clearance and the space needed in front of the appliance. For a freestanding appliance, Whirlpool recommends 5 cm above and 10 cm behind for ventilation; for an integrated model, follow the housing dimensions and the instructions for your chosen model.
What capacity should one person choose?
Que Choisir gives a general guide of 100 to 150 L of usable capacity for one person. You may need more if you do large shops, prepare meals in advance or want a genuinely usable freezer compartment.
Will a 39 or 40 dB model necessarily be quiet in a studio flat?
No. A level below 40 dB(A) can be a useful filter, but Que Choisir explains that the figure alone is not enough: vibrations, frequency and the nature of the sound all affect how noticeable it feels. If the fridge is near your bed or sofa, also consult independent tests and level it according to the instructions.
How should you compare the energy consumption of two models?
First compare annual consumption in kWh/year between appliances of a similar type and capacity, then look at the energy class, noise level, compartment capacities and climate class. The European Commission states that the EPREL database displays this regulated information for registered products.
What temperature should you aim for in a domestic fridge?
Anses recommends setting your fridge below 4 °C. Check this setting against the manufacturer’s instructions and store food according to the appliance’s different cooling zones.
