Who is this advice for?

Households with a very cold garage

If the temperature in your room falls below the usual range for a climate class, look for a freezer with an explicitly stated minimum operating temperature.

Households storing home-grown produce and bulk buys

Usable capacity matters, but so does the space available for bags, boxes or bulky items—and how easily you’ll be able to retrieve them.

People who open their freezer frequently

Easy-to-find compartments and an opening style that suits the space can make everyday access simpler, as long as the appliance is suitable for the room’s temperature in the first place.

What should you check before buying?

Record the room’s minimum and maximum temperatures throughout the year, then compare them with the range stated in the model’s documentation. Next, choose a style and interior layout to suit what you plan to store.

Factor What to check Who is this important for?
Room temperature Compare the highest and lowest temperatures recorded in the room with the minimum and maximum ambient temperatures stated for the exact model. Beko says that the SN-T class covers a range of 10 °C to 43 °C; on its own, it does not confirm that a freezer can operate below 10 °C. If my garage gets very cold in winter, I want to know whether the appliance is designed to work there. Around 50% of consumers make temperature suitability a priority.
Capacity and access Compare the usable capacity, drawers or baskets, route to the room and the clearance needed to open the freezer. For storing home-grown produce or bulk buys, I need enough space without making food difficult to find; around 30% of consumers prioritise capacity and access.
Maintenance and use Once you’ve confirmed the freezer is suitable for the room’s temperature, check the energy consumption shown on the energy label, how it handles frost and its stated power-cut storage time. If the freezer is in a room away from the kitchen, I want to keep maintenance to a minimum and compare how the appliance is designed to be used. This is a priority for around 20% of consumers.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Relying on the SN-T rating alone if your garage can freeze

Beko states that the SN-T class covers a range of 10 °C to 43 °C. Any ability to operate at a lower ambient temperature must be stated for the specific model; this is not the temperature set inside the freezer.

Compare the room’s highest and lowest temperatures with the technical specifications and instruction manual for the exact model.

  • Assuming a feature on one model applies to an entire brand

Beko, Whirlpool and Liebherr state that certain models or technologies can operate down to −15 °C—not that all their freezers can.

Have the full model number to hand when checking its stated minimum ambient temperature.

  • Choosing the capacity without checking access and clearance

A chest freezer opens from the top, so you’ll need to reach items at the bottom. An upright freezer with drawers needs enough height and door clearance.

Measure the route to the garage, the space available and the clearance needed to open the freezer before choosing a style.

  • Prioritising the energy label over temperature suitability

The energy label and frost-management features help you compare how appliances perform, but they don’t confirm that a freezer can operate in a cold garage.

Check the ambient temperature range first, then compare maintenance and energy consumption features.

Brands to consider for selected models

Beko

Beko markets some freezers for unheated rooms under the Freezer Guard name.

  • Beko states that the RFSM200T41WN upright freezer is designed for a minimum ambient temperature of −15 °C and has four drawers.
  • Beko gives the SN-T class as 10 °C to 43 °C; this rating alone doesn’t mean another model can operate at lower temperatures.

Whirlpool

Whirlpool offers chest freezers, including selected models with the Freezer Guard label.

  • Whirlpool states that the W3RHS19DW chest freezer can operate down to −15 °C and can keep food frozen for 41 hours during a power cut.
  • These specifications apply to this model and don’t automatically apply to other Whirlpool chest freezers.

Liebherr

Liebherr features FrostProtect technology on selected freezers designed for cold environments.

  • Liebherr says the components in the Fd 1404 Pure are designed to work in ambient temperatures as low as −15 °C.
  • Check the specifications for the model you’re considering: this information doesn’t apply to the entire Liebherr range.

Frequently asked questions

Is the SN-T class enough if my garage falls below 10 °C?

No, not on its own. Beko says the SN-T class covers an ambient temperature range of 10 °C to 43 °C. If your garage gets colder than this, check that the specific model is explicitly stated as suitable for a lower minimum temperature.

Where can I find the ambient temperatures a freezer is designed for?

Check the model’s technical specifications, instruction manual and rating plate. Whirlpool and Liebherr say the climate class is shown on the rating plate. If the room gets cold, also look for an explicitly stated ability to operate at a lower minimum temperature for the model you’re considering.

Chest or upright freezer: which should you choose for bulk buys?

Once you’ve checked that the freezer is suitable for the room, choose based on the size of the items you want to store and how you’d like to access them. A chest freezer gives you top access to the contents, while an upright freezer with drawers helps you separate food. Also check the space needed to open the appliance and reach its contents.

Does the energy label tell you whether a freezer is suitable for a cold garage?

No. In France, freezers are among the appliances covered by energy labelling, according to the Ministry for the Ecological Transition. However, the label doesn’t replace the ambient temperature range stated in the model’s documentation.
