What should you check before buying?
Start with the temperature range in the manual, then compare capacity, access and maintenance based on what you plan to store. UFC-Que Choisir also points out that ease of use matters when choosing a freezer.
Chest freezer
Consider one if: you’re storing home-grown produce or bulk buys, and have enough floor space and room above the lid.
Bear in mind: food at the bottom is less easy to reach, so storage baskets can be useful for keeping things organised.
Upright freezer
Consider one if: you often take out small portions and prefer to store them in compartments.
Bear in mind: check the usable capacity, the space needed when the door is open, and the temperature range specified for the exact model.
Fridge-freezer
Consider one if: you also need chilled storage in the outbuilding, and the fridge-freezer’s manual covers the garage temperatures for both compartments.
Bear in mind: compare the capacity of the freezer compartment alone. Climate class information isn’t enough to confirm that a particular model is suitable for a space where the temperature falls below +10 °C.

What to check before buying |
Who it matters most to |
| Garage temperature |
Note the seasonal temperature extremes in the space and check that the manual for the exact model specifies the ambient temperature range and installation requirements. |
If you’re concerned that the space could fall outside the specified range, make the manual your top priority. Around 40% of consumers prioritise compatibility with garage temperatures. |
| Capacity for bulk storage |
Compare the freezer’s net capacity and dimensions, and check its stated freezing capacity if you plan to add large quantities at once. |
If you’re storing home-grown produce or bulk buys of meat, I check that the capacity meets my needs; around 30% of consumers put bulk storage first. |
| Access and storage |
Check the drawers or baskets, the dimensions and the clearance needed to open the appliance. |
If you often take out small portions, easy-to-navigate storage may matter more than one large open space. Around 20% of consumers prioritise access to food. |
| Energy use and maintenance |
Compare the annual energy use in kWh shown on the energy labels and check the manual for defrosting and maintenance instructions. |
To keep day-to-day running costs under control, I compare energy use and the maintenance required; around 10% of consumers make these their main priority. |

Frequently asked questions
Is climate class SN-T enough for a garage that gets colder than +10 °C?
No. It doesn’t establish that a model is suitable for temperatures below +10 °C: Bosch specifies a range of +10 to +43 °C for SN-T. Some manufacturers state that specific models are suitable for lower temperatures; check the full range, including the upper limit, in the manual for the model you’re considering.
How should I prepare the space for my freezer?
Measure the temperature in the space throughout the year and follow the clearance requirements in the manual. For example, the manual for the Beko RFSM200T41WN says not to block the ventilation openings. Always follow the instructions for the appliance you choose.
Does a cold garage by itself guarantee that meat will be stored safely?
No. The ambient temperature in the garage alone doesn’t tell you the temperature of the food. Anses states that freezing food at home to −18 °C stops bacteria from multiplying, but most micro-organisms survive freezing. The appliance must operate within its specified temperature range, and food storage recommendations must be followed.
What should I compare for running costs and after-sales service in France?
Compare the annual energy use in kWh shown on the energy labels, as well as the maintenance tasks listed in each manual. For goods sold by a business to an individual, the French Ministry of the Economy explains that the legal guarantee of conformity applies to new, second-hand and refurbished goods. It is separate from a commercial guarantee.
