Buying priorities
Start by estimating how much frozen food you need to store, then check the location, room conditions and useful protection in the event of a power cut.
| Priority |
What to check |
Your needs |
| Capacity and access |
Compare the net freezer capacity, rather than the total capacity of a fridge freezer. Check the baskets in a chest freezer, or the drawers, shelves and compartments in an upright model. |
I want to store a large quantity of groceries and prepared meals while still being able to find food easily. UFC-Que Choisir states that chest freezers can reach 600 L, while upright models are often around 200 L, with larger models also available. |
| Location |
Measure the width, depth, door-opening clearance and delivery route. Compare the room’s minimum and maximum temperatures with the climate class or the temperature range specified for the model. |
My appliance must be installable and usable without obstructing access. In a cellar or garage, I check that the model’s operating temperature range genuinely matches the room. |
| Storage time and alerts |
Compare the stated storage time in hours using the same definition. Also look for an open-door alarm or a high-temperature alert if you are storing a large amount of food. |
I want to protect a substantial food stock more effectively if a fault or power cut occurs. UFC-Que Choisir specifically measures how well food remains below -9 °C during a simulated power cut. |
| Energy, frost and noise |
Check the energy label, annual consumption in kWh/year and noise level in dB(A) for comparable models. See whether a frost-reducing technology suits your maintenance requirements. |
The appliance runs continuously, so I want to limit its energy consumption and noise, particularly if it is near a living area. ADEME recommends using the energy label to help guide this choice. |

Frequently asked questions
How do you choose between a chest freezer and an upright freezer for prepared meals?
Choose an upright freezer if you want to separate portions and find them quickly using drawers. Choose a chest freezer if maximum capacity and large packages are your priorities, while accepting a larger footprint and the need to organise the interior.
What climate class is needed for a cellar or garage?
The climate class temperature range must cover the actual conditions in the room. Bosch states, for example, that SN-T corresponds to 10 to 43 °C, while a specific Beko model is rated to operate down to -15 °C; this tolerance should not be assumed for all freezers.
Is storage time during a power cut comparable between models?
Compare the stated values in hours and the definition used on the technical data sheets. UFC-Que Choisir assesses storage time as the time needed for the temperature to rise from -17 °C to -9 °C without power, which is a useful criterion for a substantial stock.
Can you freeze homemade meals at the end of their use-by date?
No. Anses recommends freezing food as soon as it is bought or prepared, rather than at the end of its use-by date. Once thawed, eat it promptly, do not refreeze it and follow the storage instructions.
What regulated information should you check before buying a freezer in France?
For mains-operated refrigeration appliances with a capacity of more than 10 L and up to 1 500 L, the European energy-labelling regulation sets out labelling and additional information requirements. Check the energy label and the product information sheet for the exact model before comparing energy consumption, capacity and noise level.
