Key criteria
Start by defining how much extra capacity you need and how much space you have available. Then check everyday access, installation conditions and the running cost of the exact model.

What to check |
Your needs |
| Access and storage |
Compare drawers, compartments, removable shelves, chest freezer baskets, lighting and ease of cleaning. Make sure you can retrieve food stored in every section. |
I want to separate portions, vegetables, meat and frozen food so I can find them without moving the entire stock. For large packages, an open storage area may be more suitable. |
| Capacity and footprint |
Note the usable freezer capacity, width, depth, height and the clearances specified in the instructions. Also check how far the door or lid opens. |
I am looking for storage that suits my shopping and prepared meals, without taking over the room or preventing convenient access. |
| Installation room |
Match the climate class to the actual temperature of the room. The usual ranges given by Bosch are SN from 10 to 32 °C, N from 16 to 32 °C, ST from 18 to 38 °C and T from 18 to 43 °C. |
My freezer needs to work in a kitchen, cellar, garage or conservatory. I check the stated range for this model, particularly in a cold room. |
| Energy, noise and frost |
Compare kWh/year between appliances with similar capacities and formats, as well as the noise level and defrosting system. The European energy label shows annual consumption, capacity and noise. |
As the appliance runs continuously, I want to keep its energy consumption and noise in the room to a minimum. I also choose between No Frost and manual defrosting based on how much maintenance I am prepared to do. |

Frequently asked questions
Which climate class should you choose for a cellar, garage or conservatory?
Record the minimum and maximum temperatures actually observed in the room, then compare them with the climate class of the exact model. The usual ranges are SN from 10 to 32 °C, N from 16 to 32 °C, ST from 18 to 38 °C and T from 18 to 43 °C; for a cold room, require an explicit indication from the manufacturer. For example, Liebherr states operation down to -15 °C for the CFe 2500 Pure, but this does not apply to every model.
Is a chest freezer less convenient than an upright freezer for finding food?
A chest freezer provides an open storage area suited to large quantities, while an upright freezer separates food into drawers or compartments. The choice therefore depends on how you store food: make sure you can remove items from every section and that the layout suits the way you use it.
Should you choose No Frost?
Choose No Frost if you want to reduce the need for manual defrosting. For a manual-defrost appliance, UFC-Que Choisir recommends defrosting as soon as the layer of frost reaches 3 mm, as frost increases energy consumption. However, do not compromise on the capacity, noise level or climate class required for your installation.
What should you look for on a freezer’s energy label?
Compare the class from A to G, as well as annual consumption in kWh, the capacity of the frozen compartments and the noise level. The European Commission states that the energy label for refrigerating appliances provides this information for models placed on the EU market.
What guarantee applies to a new freezer bought from a professional seller in France?
In France, the legal guarantee of conformity is mandatory for goods sold by a professional to a private individual, according to economie.gouv.fr. This is separate from any commercial extended warranty offered by the seller or manufacturer.
