Which households is it for?

Households preparing portions for the week

If you cook ahead and want to find your portions quickly, an upright freezer with drawers and an organised chest freezer are suited to different uses. Separate compartments are particularly useful when meals are labelled and stored by date.

Households with a utility room, garage or cellar

A chest freezer may be suitable if you have enough floor space and convenient access. However, compare the actual room temperature with the climate class or operating range specified for the exact model.

Small kitchens looking for extra storage

When a few extra drawers are all you need, a compact under-counter model makes more sense than a chest freezer. This format is better suited to additional storage than to a large family reserve of prepared meals.

Buying priorities

Start by working out how much freezer space you need, then check the interior layout, installation room and features that matter in everyday use.

Priority What to check Your needs
Portion organisation Transparent drawers or separate compartments; baskets or adjustable zones; access to dated portions. I want to find a prepared meal without moving all the other boxes. Drawers suit varied portions, while baskets help separate bags and large containers.
Genuinely usable capacity Net capacity of the freezer compartment alone; width, depth and height without packaging; fridge/freezer split in a fridge freezer. I need storage that suits my portions, without buying an appliance that cannot be installed. The total capacity of a fridge freezer is not enough to assess its freezer space.
Easy access or bulk storage Drawers and sub-compartments in an upright freezer; main compartment and baskets in a chest freezer; removable components where provided by the model. For meals used regularly, I prefer clear organisation. For bulk purchases or large dishes, a chest freezer may accommodate bulky items more effectively, provided it is organised.
Installation and power cuts Climate class or operating range; power-cut autonomy in hours; door or temperature alarm if specified. The intended room may be cold or warm, and I want the appliance to be suitable for that environment. I compare the stated autonomy model by model rather than inferring it from the format.
Maintenance and noise No Frost function where specified; energy label; noise level in dB(A). I prefer to minimise manual defrosting and take noise into account if the appliance is close to a living area. Compare the energy class on the model’s label within the same market.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Focusing only on total capacity or external width

A fridge freezer may show a large total capacity while offering little freezer space. Conversely, a large chest freezer may not fit in the room or may leave too little space around it for convenient access.

Measure the space, doors and access routes. Then compare the net capacity of the freezer compartment alone, the unpackaged dimensions and the clearances specified in the manual.

  • Installing an appliance in a room outside its operating range

The climate class refers to the ambient temperature intended for the appliance’s operation. Bosch Home Appliances France states that very cold or particularly warm conditions may affect its performance.

Record the room’s minimum and maximum temperatures, then check the rating plate, technical specifications and manual for your chosen model.

    Brand guide

    Whirlpool

  • According to Whirlpool France, the W3RHS37EW1 offers 371 L, 36 hours’ autonomy, three baskets and stated operation down to -15 °C through FreezerGuard.
  • These features apply to the models concerned. Chest freezers require considerable floor space; the WHM4612 was listed as out of stock at the time of checking.

Bosch

A useful benchmark when comparing upright freezers and fridge freezers where drawers, an alarm or defrosting are important factors in the decision.

  • Bosch Home Appliances France states 249 L, Big Box, an alarm and 11 hours’ autonomy for the GSV36VWEV; the GSN58VWEV is listed as No Frost with removable drawers and shelves.
  • The GSV36VWEV is not listed as No Frost. Compare the dimensions of the GSN58VWEV with the available space before installation.

Beko

Worth exploring for smaller homes and additional storage needs, with table-top and under-counter formats available on the French market.

  • Beko France presents the FSE1174N as a compact 95 L model, 54 cm wide, with transparent drawers, a reversible door and stated autonomy of 12 hours.
  • This capacity is better suited to extra freezer space than to storing a large family reserve of meals.

Liebherr

Worth considering if you are looking for a No Frost upright freezer and want to filter precisely by capacity, dimensions and noise level.

  • The Liebherr France catalogue covers freestanding upright freezers from under 80 L to over 300 L. The FNd 5026 is listed with 238 L and 36 dB.
  • Check the power-cut autonomy on the product information for your chosen model before matching it to your circumstances.
