Who are these options suitable for?

Households that prepare meals in advance

If you regularly freeze meals or sauces to use throughout the week, consider how easy the compartments make it to organise and find them. Easy access matters just as much as the stated capacity.

Households that shop less often

If you want to store multipacks of frozen food or bulky containers, compare the net capacity, the shape of the interior and the space you have at home. Also check the stated storage time in the event of a power cut for each model you are considering.

Households considering a utility room, garage or cellar

Before choosing a location, check that its temperatures are within the permitted range for the exact model. The ventilation requirements and space needed to open the appliance must also suit the room.

What should you compare before choosing?

Start by working out how much extra space you really need after shopping and preparing meals. Then compare freezer capacity and access to food: these two needs do not always point to the same format.

Priority What to check Your needs
Usable capacity Compare the net capacity of the freezer compartment alone, then consider whether there is room for your containers and bulk buys. A larger fridge freezer will not necessarily give you enough extra freezer space: for example, Electrolux lists 62 L of freezer capacity out of the LNA7CE18S0’s total 249 L. I want to know whether my food stocks will fit in the current compartment, perhaps with some reorganisation, or whether I need a separate appliance.
Access to stored food Look at the drawers and compartments in an upright freezer, or the depth of the compartment and baskets in a chest freezer. UFC-Que Choisir also recommends checking how easy the drawers are to handle. If I take out portions almost every day, I’d rather be able to organise and find them easily; for bulky items, I may prefer a more open interior.
Space and installation Measure the appliance, access routes and opening area. Check the manual for ventilation clearances and the model’s ambient temperature range: Electrolux notes that this depends in particular on its climate class. My garage or utility room is only suitable if the appliance can handle the room’s actual temperatures and can be installed there in accordance with its manual.
Freezing and power cuts If you freeze several batches of fresh food at once, compare the stated freezing capacity in kg/24 h. Check the stated storage time during a power cut separately; UFC-Que Choisir also assesses how well appliances retain the cold in its testing process. My shopping and meal preparation may mean I need to freeze a substantial amount at once; I’d also like to know how long the appliance is expected to keep food cold during a power cut.
Day-to-day use For appliances with similar capacities and formats, compare the energy rating, annual consumption in kWh, noise level and defrosting method. The energy label presented by the French Ministry of the Economy helps you compare eligible new appliances. An extra appliance will be running continuously in my home, so noise and maintenance also matter, especially if it is near living areas.

What mistakes should you avoid?

  • Relying on the capacity in litres without measuring the appliance

A chest freezer takes up floor space, and its lid needs room to open. A large upright freezer may also need plenty of height and depth. Interior capacity alone does not tell you how easy it will be to reach your food.

Measure the space and access routes, then allow room to open the appliance. Think about where you will keep the portions you reach for often and the bulkier products.

  • Assuming any freezer will work in a garage

Whether an appliance can be used in an unheated room depends on the model and the ambient temperature. Beko and Liebherr state that certain specific models can operate down to -15 °C; this does not apply to all their freezers.

Check the room’s temperatures against the product specifications and manual for the appliance you choose, and make sure you meet its ventilation requirements.

  • Confusing total capacity with freezer capacity

The capacity shown for a fridge freezer also includes its fridge section. For the Electrolux LNA7CE18S0 built-in fridge freezer, Electrolux lists 249 L in total, including 62 L for the freezer.

Compare the capacity of the freezer compartment alone with the portions and frozen food you want to store.

  • Overlooking noise, storage time and defrosting

Two appliances with similar capacities can differ in features that matter for your space and the way you store food. UFC-Que Choisir’s assessments include factors such as energy consumption, storage time during a power cut, noise and ease of use.

Compare these features model by model, along with the energy label and maintenance instructions.

Manual defrosting also takes time and effort; how often it is needed depends on the appliance and how you use it.

Brands and models worth knowing about

These examples highlight features to look for in a specific model; a brand name does not guarantee the same features across its whole range.

Beko

Beko’s range includes the HSM14540 freestanding chest freezer.

  • For the HSM14540, Beko lists a net capacity of 205 L, a 23-hour storage time and the ability to operate in an unheated room down to -15 °C.
  • If you take out several small portions each day, check that a chest freezer’s storage layout suits the way you want to organise them.

Bosch

The GSN58VWEV freestanding upright freezer features removable drawers and shelves.

  • Bosch lists a usable capacity of 366 L, No Frost, Vario Zone, Big Box, a door alarm and 12 hours of storage time for this model.
  • Check the dimensions and clearance needed to open this large upright freezer before deciding where to put it.

Liebherr

Liebherr’s range includes the CFe 1870 Pure chest freezer.

  • Liebherr lists a capacity of 281 L for this model and says its FrostProtect feature allows it to be installed in a room where the temperature falls as low as -15 °C.
  • For a cellar or garage, always check the requirements for the exact model and the room’s actual temperature.

Appliances for different storage needs

These Joybuy options include fridge freezers for keeping everything in one appliance, upright freezers for adding separate storage and a small chest freezer. Focus on the freezer capacity you need, the interior layout and the space available at home: each format is suited to different needs.

Frequently asked questions

Can I install any freezer in an unheated garage?

No. Check the ambient temperature range and ventilation instructions for the exact model. Beko states that the HSM14540 can operate down to -15 °C, and Liebherr lists the same limit for the CFe 1870 Pure; this does not automatically apply to other models.

How much space should I leave around a freezer?

Follow the clearances and installation diagram in the manual for the model you choose. Electrolux notes that air needs to circulate around the appliance. Also allow enough room to open the door or lid and reach your food.

What should I compare on the energy label?

For eligible new appliances in France, compare the energy rating and annual consumption in kWh, ideally between models with similar capacities and formats. The French Ministry of the Economy describes the energy label as a tool for comparison; then check the model specifications for freezer capacity and the features that matter for how you plan to use it.
