Who is this guide for?

Households that prepare meals in advance

If you freeze a variety of meals and reach for them regularly, interior organisation and easy access to portions matter just as much as capacity. ADEME recommends planning meals and keeping track of food stocks to help manage your grocery shopping.

Families stocking up

If you want to store provisions or a large amount of frozen food, compare usable capacity and floor space, as well as how easy it is to reach food at the bottom. Manufacturers’ product details let you compare the capacity of individual models.

Households with limited kitchen space

If space is tight, check the dimensions of an under-counter space or the freezer capacity of a fridge freezer before choosing a separate appliance. The dimensions and capacities listed by Liebherr and Bosch apply to specific models.

Which criteria should you compare?

Start by considering how much food you need to store and what it is, then check how easy it is to access, the space available and the operating conditions in the room where you plan to put the appliance.

What matters to you What to check Who it matters most to
Finding prepared meals Usable freezer capacity, drawer dimensions and whether any internal fittings can be removed. Bosch says the bins and shelves in the GSN36CWEP are removable. If I reach for different portions often, I want to find and take them out without rearranging all my food. Around 36% of consumers prioritise easy access to portions.
Storing larger food stocks Compare capacity and external dimensions, as well as the number of baskets. According to the manufacturer, the Liebherr CFe 2500 Pure has a capacity of 497 l and is 167 cm wide; make sure these dimensions suit your available space. If I store a lot of food, I check that the capacity meets my needs and that I can reach items at the bottom. Around 29% of consumers prioritise storage capacity.
Fitting the appliance into your home Measure the appliance or the space it will go in, depending on the type of installation, then check the ventilation guidance and the permitted ambient temperature range in the model’s instructions. In a narrow kitchen or a space that’s already been allocated, I need to make sure the appliance fits and that there’s room to open it. Around 21% of consumers prioritise available space.
Balancing energy use and storage time during a power cut Compare the annual energy consumption in kWh and the stated storage time in hours for each model. Don’t confuse these two figures or assume they apply to other models. If I’m concerned about the energy use of an extra appliance or power cuts, I compare these details for the models I’m considering. Around 14% of consumers prioritise running costs or storage time during a power cut.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Choosing a fridge freezer based on its total capacity

The fridge capacity isn’t the same as the available freezer capacity. Bosch lists 260 l of usable fridge capacity and 103 l of freezer capacity for the KGN39EXCF.

Before choosing a fridge freezer or a separate appliance, compare the capacity of the freezer compartment alone with the amount of food you usually store.

If the compartment is too small for your food stocks, you may need to consider an additional freezer.

  • Assuming any freezer is suitable for a garage

The permitted ambient temperature range varies by model. A specification for one model doesn’t apply to every appliance of the same type.

Before installing your freezer, check the possible temperature in the room against the product details and instructions for the exact model.

  • Confusing reduced frost build-up with no manual defrosting

Advertised technologies don’t necessarily work in the same way. Liebherr says SmartFrost reduces frost build-up in the CFe 2500 Pure, while Bosch lists No Frost for the GSN36CWEP.

Check the technology and care instructions for the model you choose, rather than assuming the same features apply to all appliances of that type.

Brands to consider

Bosch

The GSN36CWEP and KGN39EXCF illustrate two different configurations: a separate freezer and a fridge freezer.

  • Bosch says the GSN36CWEP offers 242 l of usable freezer capacity, with removable bins and shelves; the KGN39EXCF has 103 l of usable freezer capacity.
  • These capacities and features apply to these two models, not to the entire Bosch range.

Liebherr

The CFe 2500 Pure and SDUFd 3603 Pure are designed for very different needs and spaces.

  • Liebherr lists a capacity of 497 l and a width of 167 cm for the CFe 2500 Pure chest freezer, and a total capacity of 87 l for the SDUFd 3603 Pure under-counter freezer.
  • The specified space for the SDUFd 3603 Pure is 82 to 88 × 60 × 56 cm. The FrostProtect rating down to −15 °C applies to the CFe 2500 Pure only.

Whirlpool

The W3RHS19DW chest freezer is an example of a mid-capacity model to compare with your available space and intended use in mind.

  • For this model, Whirlpool lists 198 l of usable capacity, two baskets, 41 hours of storage time during a power cut and operation at ambient temperatures down to −15 °C.
  • These are manufacturer specifications for the W3RHS19DW, not general features of Whirlpool chest freezers.

Beko

The HSM14540 chest freezer offers another point of comparison for family food stocks and rooms that may get cold.

  • For this model, Beko lists a net capacity of 205 l, one basket, 23 hours of storage time during a power cut and a minimum operating ambient temperature of −15 °C.
  • Check the installation requirements in the HSM14540 instructions before placing it in a cold room.

Frequently asked questions

How do you compare a fridge freezer with a separate freezer?

Compare the capacity of the freezer compartment with the amount of food you usually store, rather than looking at the fridge freezer’s total capacity. Bosch lists 103 l of usable freezer capacity for the KGN39EXCF and 242 l for the GSN36CWEP upright freezer. These models are examples for comparison, not a universal benchmark.

Can you install a freezer in a garage or under a worktop?

Check the ambient temperature range and installation instructions for the specific model. Liebherr says the CFe 2500 Pure can operate at ambient temperatures down to −15 °C, and Beko gives the same limit for the HSM14540; these specifications don’t apply to other models. For an under-counter appliance, also check the dimensions of the space: Liebherr specifies 82 to 88 × 60 × 56 cm for the SDUFd 3603 Pure.

Does frost-free technology mean you never need to maintain the appliance?

No: advertised technologies don’t all work in the same way. Bosch says the No Frost GSN36CWEP doesn’t need manual defrosting, while Liebherr describes SmartFrost as reducing frost build-up in the CFe 2500 Pure. Follow the care instructions in the manual for the model you choose.

Are energy labels required for these appliances in France?

For household refrigeration appliances sold in France, the DGCCRF states that energy labelling applies and that labels and product information sheets must be written in French. This guidance from the DGCCRF, published in June 2025, doesn’t on its own determine whether a model is suitable for your home.
