Which format is right for you?

You’re moving into a kitchen without a built-in recess

A freestanding model is a good first option to consider if you want to install an appliance without replacing your kitchen units. UFC-Que Choisir distinguishes its finished exterior from an integrated model, which needs a purpose-built recess. You’ll still need to check the available space and connections.

Your kitchen is narrow

A 45 cm freestanding appliance and a compact tabletop model don’t offer the same capacity. UFC-Que Choisir describes 45 cm models with 9 place settings, while the Candy CP 6E51LS tabletop model has 6. Compare these capacities with your usual loads rather than relying on the word ‘compact’ alone.

You rent and don’t want to make changes to your home

Start by checking the existing space and connections, then read the instructions for the appliance you’re considering. If installation would require lasting changes to the units, plumbing or electrics, discuss your plans with your landlord before committing.

What should you check before choosing?

Start with the space available, then check that the capacity and installation requirements suit your needs.

PriorityWhat to checkYour needs
Layout Measure the width, height and depth, then check how much room you’ll need to open the door. UFC-Que Choisir notes that an integrated model needs a recess, while a freestanding model has its own finished exterior. I want to install an appliance without creating a recess, so I’ll compare freestanding models first. If there’s already a suitable recess, I can also consider a compatible integrated model.
Capacity Compare the stated number of place settings with the space available for the items you wash regularly. The tabletop Candy CP 6E51LS has 6 place settings; UFC-Que Choisir describes 45 cm models with 9, while the 60 cm Beko BDFN26460G has 14. A tabletop model may be enough for smaller loads. If washing up from several meals or bulky items builds up, I’ll also look at freestanding models.
Connections Check the model’s instructions for the water inlet, waste outlet and electrical supply. Also check its installation requirements for your chosen location, including beneath a worktop. I may have a free space, but I need to be able to install and use the appliance there in line with its instructions. A tabletop model still needs suitable waste and electrical connections.
Energy use and noise When comparing appliances with similar capacities, ADEME recommends checking the energy label for the rating, kWh per 100 cycles, litres per cycle, capacity and noise level. Noise matters to me if my kitchen is close to the living area. If I run frequent cycles, I’ll compare the stated energy and water use too, rather than looking at the rating alone.

What mistakes should you avoid?

  • Assuming ‘compact’ means a specific capacity

A 6-place-setting tabletop appliance, such as the Candy CP 6E51LS, doesn’t offer the same capacity as a 45 cm freestanding model. UFC-Que Choisir describes 45 cm models with 9 place settings, for example.

Before choosing between a tabletop and a freestanding model, check the dimensions, stated number of place settings and space available for your everyday dishes.

  • Choosing an integrated model without a suitable recess

Even a compact integrated model must be installed in a purpose-built recess. Its small footprint doesn’t make it a tabletop or freestanding appliance.

Before choosing this format, check the recess and installation requirements. For a fully integrated model, make sure you have a compatible door panel too.

Depending on your existing kitchen layout and the model, you may need a compatible door panel or to adapt your units.

  • Measuring the width alone

According to Bosch, the Bosch SMS4ETI16E measures 845 × 600 × 600 mm. Its width alone won’t tell you whether it will fit beneath a worktop or whether the door can open.

Measure the available width, height and depth, then compare them with the exact model’s dimensions and follow its installation instructions.

  • Relying on the energy rating alone

Two appliances can have different capacities and stated energy and water use, even if you start your comparison with their ratings.

On the energy label described by ADEME, also check the kWh per 100 cycles, litres per cycle and number of place settings. Where possible, compare models with similar capacities.

A few trusted brands and models

Bosch

The French range includes 45 and 60 cm freestanding models, as well as integrated options. The SMS4ETI16E is an example of a 60 cm freestanding model.

  • Bosch lists dimensions of 845 × 600 × 600 mm, a B energy rating and 9,0 L per Eco cycle for the SMS4ETI16E.
  • These specifications apply to this model only; check its instructions for installation and connection requirements.

Beko

Two freestanding models in the French range offer a choice of 13 or 14 place settings, provided you have a suitable space.

  • Beko lists 14 place settings for the 60 cm BDFN26460G and 13 for the LVV1347W.
  • Capacity alone doesn’t confirm that a model will fit. Check the dimensions, connections and energy label for the model you choose.

Candy

The French range includes a compact tabletop model and a slimline freestanding option—two formats worth distinguishing in a small kitchen.

  • Candy lists 6 place settings and dimensions of 550 × 501 × 443 mm for the tabletop CP 6E51LS, compared with 10 place settings and dimensions of 448 × 605 × 846 mm for the freestanding CF0C7SB0FW.
  • These dimensions and capacities apply to these two models only. The word ‘compact’ is no substitute for comparing them.

Frequently asked questions

Can you fit a freestanding dishwasher beneath a worktop?

Yes, if the model and space allow it. Measure the available height, width and depth, then check the instructions for installation, hose routing and door clearance. Don’t assume the top can be removed on every model.

Is a compact 6-place-setting model enough for two people?

It may be suitable if your loads are small and your dishes fit inside. The Candy CP 6E51LS has 6 place settings; if you build up a pile of utensils or washing up from several meals, compare 45 cm models too—some have 9 to 10 place settings.

Which connections should you check before ordering?

Check the instructions for your chosen model to confirm its water inlet, waste outlet and electrical supply requirements. Having enough space, or a water tank on a compact model, doesn’t by itself mean the whole installation is suitable.

How do you compare the energy use of two models?

Compare models with similar capacities using their energy labels. ADEME says these show details including the rating, kWh per 100 cycles, litres of water per cycle and capacity in place settings. One letter alone doesn’t tell you everything.
