Who are these sizes for?

The deciding factor will differ depending on whether you’re short of a built-in space, width or floor space.

People moving into a home without a fitted kitchen

If there’s no unit designed to take an integrated appliance door, a freestanding model means you don’t have to choose an integrated design. Measure the route in and the space available, then check the floor and connections before comparing capacities.

Anyone looking for an independent appliance

A freestanding dishwasher doesn’t need a matching cabinet door. If you’re thinking of moving it when you move home again, also check that its current installation meets the instructions and that the connections are suitable.

Small households and kitchens

If width is limited, compare the dimensions of a 45 cm model with those of a compact tabletop dishwasher. A 45 cm model may have a depth close to that of a standard-sized one; a compact model takes up less floor space, but washes fewer dishes per cycle.

What should you check before choosing?

Start with the space and connections, then compare sizes based on the amount and type of crockery you need to wash.

PriorityWhat to checkYour needs
Location Compare the model’s exact height, width and depth with the route in and the space available. Allow room for the hoses and door to open, and check that the floor provides a stable base. I want to be able to get the appliance into place and open the door without moving the furniture.
Connections Check the water supply, drainage and socket required for your chosen model. For a model with a water tank, also check how it is filled and where the drain hose will run. If there’s no fixed water supply within reach, I’m interested in a compact model with a tank, as long as I can drain the water.
Size and capacity Compare the actual dimensions, not just the “60 cm” or “45 cm” label. Check the place-setting capacity and basket layout to make sure larger items of crockery will fit. The available width may lead me to choose a 45 cm model; if floor space is limited too, I’ll look at compact models and how much they can wash per cycle.
Under-worktop installation Look for “under-worktop” or “removable top” information for the specific model. Check its instructions and installation diagram, as well as its height once the top has been removed, if removal is permitted. I’d like to use the space under my worktop without buying an integrated appliance with a matching cabinet door.
Everyday use In an open-plan kitchen, check the stated noise level in dB(A). To compare water and energy use, use figures given for the same reference programme, such as the Eco cycle. Noise matters if the kitchen opens onto the living area; I also want to compare consumption figures calculated on the same basis.

What should you watch out for?

  • Relying on the stated width alone

A “45 cm” model isn’t necessarily shallow, and the dimensions of a “60 cm” model vary from one model to another. The appliance may fit into the space but leave too little room for the hoses or the open door.

Measure the route in, height, depth and clearances, then compare them with the installation diagram for the exact model.

  • Removing the top of any freestanding model

Not all freestanding dishwashers have a removable top. Bosch notes that the top on some models also provides protection against water splashes.

For under-worktop installation, check that it is expressly permitted for your model and follow the fitting instructions before removing the top.

  • Assuming a compact model with a tank doesn’t need drainage

A tank can replace a fixed water supply, but not the drain. Manual filling may also be a consideration if you run frequent cycles.

Check where to secure the drain hose and how the model should be filled. Daan Tech warns that the wastewater from its Bob model can reach 70 °C.

  • Choosing based on place-setting capacity alone

The stated capacity doesn’t tell you on its own whether your pans, large plates or glasses will fit easily in the baskets.

Compare the interior layout, adjustable baskets and loading diagrams with the crockery you use every day.

Which brands and ranges should you consider?

These examples show different sizes and installation requirements to compare model by model; they are not a list of products available on Joybuy.

Bosch

The freestanding range includes 45 and 60 cm models, as well as some models with a removable top.

  • According to Bosch Électroménager France, removing the top on selected models can provide around 2 to 3 cm of extra clearance under a worktop.
  • Check that removal is permitted in the instructions for the model you’re considering, and confirm its final height.

Electrolux

Electrolux France describes the ESG88600SX as a freestanding dishwasher designed for under-worktop installation, with a removable top.

  • This explicit guidance means you can consider installing it under a worktop without an integrated cabinet door.
  • The information for the ESG88600SX doesn’t apply to other models: check their product details and diagrams separately.

Whirlpool

Whirlpool France lists the W8F HS61BS and WFC3C42PX as two freestanding 60 cm models.

  • The W8F HS61BS is listed for 15 place settings and 41 dB; the WFC3C42PX for 14 place settings and 42 dB.
  • These capacities and noise levels apply to the models named; check the dimensions and installation requirements of the model you choose.

Beko

The LVV1347W is an example of Beko France’s standard 60 cm freestanding range.

  • Its product details list a capacity of 13 place settings.
  • A stated installation height doesn’t confirm that the top is removable. If you’re planning to install it under a worktop, check this separately.

Daan Tech

Daan Tech’s compact Bob model may suit a kitchen without enough floor space for a standard-sized appliance.

  • According to Daan Tech, Bob can use its built-in 4 L tank without a fixed water supply.
  • Drainage is still required; Daan Tech states that discharged water can reach 70 °C.

Frequently asked questions

What should I measure before ordering a freestanding dishwasher?

Measure the delivery route and the height, width and depth of the space, allowing for the hoses and the door opening. Also check that the floor is stable, and that you have the required water supply, drainage and socket. Then compare everything with the instructions and diagram for the exact model.

Can you install a freestanding dishwasher under a worktop?

Yes, if the model allows this type of installation and the final dimensions are suitable. Look for explicit information saying “under-worktop” or “removable top”, and check the instructions before removing the top. Bosch states that some of its models can gain around 2 to 3 cm; Electrolux describes the ESG88600SX as an under-worktop model with a removable top.

Does a mini dishwasher with a tank mean you don’t need any connections?

No: a tank can save you from needing a fixed water supply, but wastewater still has to drain away. For its Bob model, Daan Tech says to arrange drainage according to its instructions and warns that discharged water can reach 70 °C.
