Which appliance is right for you?

Households that often grate and slice

If raw vegetables, sliced vegetables or grated cheese regularly feature in your meals, look at food processors with the corresponding discs. UFC-Que Choisir advises choosing accessories based on how you’ll actually use them and making sure you have somewhere to store them.

Smaller households with limited storage space

For soups, purées or small quantities of chopped ingredients, compare a hand blender with a mini chopper attachment against a compact chopper. Check the container’s capacity: a chopper on its own won’t handle the same tasks as a hand blender.

People who use their appliance frequently

Count the parts you’ll need to wash after making your usual dishes, then check the manual to see which are dishwasher-safe. UFC-Que Choisir reminds users to take care when removing and cleaning blades and graters.

Which features should you prioritise?

Start by thinking about the tasks you do most often: grating and slicing need different accessories from blending soup or chopping a few ingredients. If your main aim is cooking, UFC-Que Choisir distinguishes between a cooking food processor and a food processor; a multicooker is also primarily designed for cooking.

Food processor

Choose this if: you often grate or slice, as well as chop and blend.

Bear in mind: you’ll need space for the base, bowls and discs, as well as time to clean them.

Hand blender with mini chopper

Choose this if: you mainly make soups and purées, with the occasional small quantity to chop.

Limitation: the hand blender and mini chopper won’t replace grating or slicing discs.

Mini chopper

Choose this if: you mainly chop small portions and want to keep the amount of space it takes up to a minimum.

Limitation: check the bowl’s capacity, and don’t expect this appliance alone to grate or slice.

Feature What to check Your needs
Accessories Check that it comes with the grating and slicing discs, chopping blade and container you need for your recipes. The number of advertised functions doesn’t tell you exactly what’s included. I often prepare grated or sliced vegetables, so these discs will be more useful to me than an accessory for an occasional recipe.
Capacity and storage Compare the usable capacity, the appliance’s dimensions and the space needed for the bowls and accessories. UFC-Que Choisir recommends choosing a bowl size to suit your household’s habits. For small portions, I want a suitably sized container without having to leave a large base and several discs on the worktop.
Cleaning See which parts need to be removed after each use and check the manual to find out whether they’re dishwasher-safe. Take care when handling blades and graters. If I use the appliance to cook almost every day, the time it takes to dismantle and wash it matters just as much as the functions on offer.

Mistakes to avoid before you buy

  • Assuming all food processors can grate and slice

A chopping blade or blending accessory won’t replace the discs designed for these tasks. The extra functions available depend on which parts come with the model.

Make a list of the dishes you prepare regularly, then check what’s in the box before comparing the number of functions.

  • Comparing only the bowl’s total volume

The usable capacity may differ from the stated total volume. A bowl that’s too small may mean you have to work in batches, and you’ll also need to find space for the appliance and its accessories.

Compare usable capacities and measure the space you have available, including the height beneath your cupboards.

  • Assuming dishwasher-safe means no cleaning is needed

Dishwasher compatibility varies by part, and blades and graters remain sharp when removed. UFC-Que Choisir recommends following the manufacturer’s instructions for each component.

Check which parts need washing after your usual recipes and look up the care instructions for the exact model.

A guide to brands and ranges

These range examples highlight differences in capacity, accessories and size. They aren’t the products featured in the Joybuy selection below.

Magimix

Magimix’s product pages for the Compact System 3200 XL and CS 5200 XL make it easy to compare two sizes of food processor.

  • Magimix states that the Compact System 3200 XL has three bowls and a usable capacity of 1 L, compared with a usable capacity of 1.8 L for the CS 5200 XL.
  • Also compare the space they’ll take up in your kitchen: their stated dimensions are 396 × 205 × 266 mm and 450 × 213 × 272 mm, respectively.

Moulinex

The range includes food processors with different accessories depending on the model.

  • Moulinex says the Double Force Compact comes with four accessories that can be stored in a basket inside the bowl.
  • The Double Force model advertised with 10 accessories and a 3 L bowl is worth checking carefully: consider which parts you’ll actually use and where you’ll store them.

Bosch

The MSM4W220 is an example of a hand blender supplied with an accessory for chopping small quantities.

  • Bosch lists a detachable blending foot, a mini chopper and a 600 ml measuring jug designed for small quantities.
  • Its product page doesn’t list grating or slicing discs. Check separately if these functions are important for your meals.

Kenwood

The CH180 and Easy Chop+ mini choppers are two examples designed for smaller preparations.

  • Kenwood says the CH180 has a dishwasher-safe bowl, while the Easy Chop+ has a usable capacity of 600 ml.
  • Compare the Easy Chop+’s capacity with your usual portion sizes. A mini chopper isn’t a substitute for a food processor with discs for grating or slicing.

Frequently asked questions

How do I choose the right bowl size for my household?

Compare the stated usable capacity with the quantities you usually prepare, rather than relying on the total volume alone. For example, Magimix lists a usable capacity of 1 L for the CS 3200 XL and 1.8 L for the CS 5200 XL. Also check how much space you’ll need to store the bowl.

Are all food processor accessories dishwasher-safe?

No. Check the manual for your chosen model, part by part. Moulinex says that the Double Force Compact’s accessories are dishwasher-safe, except for the motor unit. UFC-Que Choisir points out that this varies between bowls and accessories.

What should I do with an old food processor or blender in France?

If it’s still usable, consider repairing it or giving it away. If you need to dispose of an appliance, ADEME lists in-store collection points and dedicated collection areas for electrical and electronic equipment at recycling centres.
