What should you check before choosing?
Start with the type of dirt you need to clean, then check that the appliance is suitable for your floor and consider what you’ll still need to do yourself. UFC-Que Choisir points out that a floor washer is designed primarily to wash hard floors, not to replace a vacuum cleaner on dry floors.
| What to consider |
What to check |
My needs |
| Regular washing |
Check that the model is designed for wet cleaning hard floors and that its instructions cover your type of flooring. Compare the steps involved before and after cleaning. |
I wash my floors often and want to avoid getting out a separate bucket and mop. |
| Dry vacuuming |
Don’t assume that picking up dirt while washing is the same as vacuuming a dry floor. If this function is essential, check the documented capabilities of the specific model you’re considering. |
I also need to pick up dust, crumbs and other dry debris at home, so I want to know whether I’ll need to keep my vacuum cleaner. |
| One or two rollers |
Compare the design, access to the rollers and how they’re maintained on the specific models. The number of rollers alone doesn’t show how well a model will clean a particular stain. |
I want an appliance that’s practical to use and clean, rather than choosing based only on the number of rollers. |
| Floor suitability |
Identify the material and finish, then check the surfaces listed as suitable in the instructions. For wooden floors, don’t assume that guidance for sealed wood flooring applies to every model. |
My floor is wood or another surface that’s sensitive to moisture, so its finish must be suitable for the appliance I choose. |
| Appliance maintenance |
Compare how the tanks are emptied, how the rollers or pads are cleaned, and how they’re dried. A self-cleaning cycle doesn’t remove the need to follow the manufacturer’s maintenance instructions. |
I want to save time while washing the floor, without finding that the appliance needs a cleaning routine I’m not happy with. |
| Automated cleaning |
For a robot mop, check where the dock will go, how to set up the app and whether the model has any Wi-Fi requirements. You’ll also need to maintain the dock. |
I’d rather schedule light, regular cleaning, while keeping another option for dirt that needs targeted attention. |
Which brands are worth considering?
These brands offer examples of different appliance designs. Their ranges don’t necessarily share the same features or suitability for different floor types.
Kärcher
Kärcher’s floor washers include the FCV 4 Extra and FC7, both mentioned in UFC-Que Choisir content.
- Models to consider if you’re looking for an appliance dedicated to washing hard floors.
- Check the features, maintenance requirements and suitable floor types for each model rather than assuming they’re the same across the range.
Tineco
Tineco offers cordless floor washers, including the Floor One S7 Stretch.
- Tineco says the Floor One S7 Stretch has an anti-tangle system and a FlashDry self-cleaning cycle.
- These advertised features don’t prove that it can vacuum dry floors as well as a dedicated vacuum cleaner or remove every type of stain.
Rowenta
Rowenta’s X-Clean range includes cordless hard-floor washers, such as the X-Clean 10.
- Rowenta says the X-Clean 10 offers automatic cleaning and drying at 65 °C.
- This cycle doesn’t remove the need to check the model’s maintenance instructions and list of suitable floors.
Dyson
Dyson’s WashG1 is designed for wet cleaning hard floors.
- Dyson lists tiles, laminate, vinyl and sealed wood flooring among the surfaces suitable for the WashG1.
- For wooden floors, check the actual finish and the model’s instructions. The term “sealed wood flooring” doesn’t cover every type of wooden floor.
Roborock
Roborock offers robot vacuum mops designed to automate some routine cleaning.
- Roborock says the QV 35A’s dock washes and dries the mop pads, empties the dust and refills the water tank.
- A dock needs space and still requires maintenance. For the QV 35A, also check that you have access to a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network.

Frequently asked questions
Can a floor washer replace my vacuum cleaner and mop?
Not for every type of cleaning. A floor washer can make regular cleaning of suitable hard floors easier, but UFC-Que Choisir’s guide says it can’t replace a vacuum cleaner for dust and debris on dry floors. You’ll also need a suitable method for stains that require targeted attention.
Can I use a floor washer on wooden flooring?
It depends on the floor’s finish and the model. UFC-Que Choisir advises against wooden floors in its general guide, while Dyson lists sealed wood flooring as suitable for the WashG1. Identify your floor’s finish and check the exact model’s instructions before using a wet-cleaning appliance.
Does self-cleaning mean I don’t have to clean the appliance by hand?
No. A self-cleaning cycle can take care of some of the cleaning for the roller or pads, but you’ll still need to check the tanks and parts that come into contact with dirty water. Compare the emptying, cleaning and drying instructions for the models you’re considering.
What warranty applies to an appliance bought from a business in France?
According to the French Ministry of the Economy, the statutory guarantee of conformity is mandatory for new, second-hand or refurbished goods sold by a business to a consumer. It is separate from any commercial warranty. Keep your proof of purchase and a record of the advertised features.
What should I do with an electric floor washer at the end of its life?
In France, electrical and electronic equipment can be collected and recycled through a dedicated scheme, as outlined by the ministry responsible for the ecological transition. Check which collection point or take-back option is available for your appliance.
