Which method is right for you?

Your choice depends as much on the other surfaces you need to vacuum as it does on how often you wet-clean your hard floors.

Households that wash hard floors frequently

If light dirt and spills are a regular occurrence, a floor cleaner can reduce the number of steps involved. You’ll also need to empty the dirty-water tank and clean the appliance after use.

Households with a mix of floor coverings

If your cleaning routine includes rugs, fitted carpets or other surfaces that need to be vacuumed dry, check the model’s functions and accessories carefully before considering replacing your vacuum cleaner.

Households with floors that are sensitive to moisture

Identify each floor covering and check whether it can be wet-cleaned. Adjustable water flow may be important for delicate floors, but stated compatibility with some hard floors does not mean a cleaner is suitable for every wooden floor.

What should you check before choosing?

Start with the surfaces you need to vacuum dry, then look at washing performance, after-use maintenance and how long it takes to clean. The label ‘vacuum mop’ alone doesn’t tell you whether an appliance can do all these jobs.

Priority What to check Think about your needs
Dry vacuuming Check that the appliance has a dry vacuuming function, which surfaces and accessories it’s designed for, and the relevant test results. UFC-Que Choisir points out that a floor cleaner designed mainly for washing does not, by itself, replace a vacuum cleaner. I may want to remove dust from rugs or other surfaces without getting them wet. If so, wet-cleaning hard floors won’t take care of all my cleaning.
Washing and floor coverings Compare tests involving specific types of dirt, access along edges and manoeuvrability around furniture. Check separately that each floor covering is suitable for wet cleaning and, if needed, that the water flow can be adjusted. My hard floors mainly get lightly soiled, but I don’t want to assume the same appliance will tackle every stain or be suitable for my wooden floor.
After-use maintenance Read how to empty the dirty-water tank and clean the roller. Check which consumables are compatible with the exact model number: a self-cleaning cycle won’t necessarily take care of these tasks for you. I’m interested in cleaning in one go, as long as cleaning the appliance afterwards fits into my routine.
Run time and manoeuvrability For a cordless model, compare the tested battery life and charging time with the area you need to clean. Also look at the two tanks, the weight and how the cleaner head moves around furniture. When cleaning several rooms or around low furniture, I’d like to know whether I’ll have to stop to recharge, refill or empty a tank.

Which common misconceptions should you avoid?

  • Assuming ‘vacuum mop’ means it can vacuum dry

UFC-Que Choisir distinguishes between the main function of washing hard floors and the dry vacuuming needed for other surfaces. The product category name doesn’t prove that a model can replace your vacuum cleaner.

Before getting rid of your vacuum, check the modes, accessories and vacuuming test results for the surfaces in your home.

Otherwise, you’ll need to keep an appliance for dry dust or rugs.

  • Confusing self-cleaning with no maintenance

The roller-cleaning cycle won’t necessarily empty the tank for you. For the Floor One S5 Combo Plus, Tineco specifically says to empty the dirty-water tank before running the self-cleaning cycle.

Check the instructions for the model you’re considering and make sure you can access the tanks after each use.

Emptying the tank and cleaning the components are still tasks you’ll need to build into your routine.

  • Choosing consumables based on the brand alone

Rollers and other replaceable parts can vary from one model number to another, even within the same range.

Make a note of the exact model number, then check which parts are compatible and how often they should be replaced.

  • Assuming two products with the same short name are identical

Les Numériques tested the Mova M10 as a wet floor cleaner, while a Joybuy product listing titled M10 describes a dry-use-only vacuum cleaner. The shared name doesn’t prove that they’re the same appliance.

Compare the full model number and check that the product listing states it has a wet-cleaning function before you buy.

Brands and models to consider

These notes apply to the models mentioned, not to every product from each brand. Always check the exact model number of the appliance you’re considering.

Tineco

The Floor One range includes wet cleaners for hard floors; the Stretch S6 is an example of a model that lies flat.

  • Tineco states that the Floor One Stretch S6 lies flat at a height of 13 cm, so it can reach under some furniture.
  • For another model, the S5 Combo Plus, the brand says to empty the dirty-water tank before the self-cleaning cycle. Check the instructions for the model you choose.

Rowenta

It’s worth looking at each X-Clean model individually, particularly when it comes to roller maintenance and replaceable parts.

  • Rowenta describes the X-Clean 7 GZ5735E0 as having an automatic cleaning and drying cycle.
  • Don’t assume that findings about another X-Clean model apply to the GZ5735E0.

Mova

The M10 reviewed by Les Numériques is a wet floor cleaner.

  • In its M10 test, Les Numériques noted its washing performance, vacuuming and the manoeuvrability of the cleaner head around furniture.
  • A Joybuy listing also named M10 states that it is for dry use only. Check that it’s the same product before comparing the two descriptions.

Roborock

The F25 Steam is a steam floor cleaner, and should be distinguished from other F25 models.

  • Les Numériques found that the F25 Steam it tested delivered good washing results and was easy to maintain.
  • The F25 name without ‘Steam’ doesn’t establish that it’s the same model. Also check that your floor covering is suitable for the washing method you choose.

Dyson

The WashG1, Clean+Wash Hygiene and PencilWash are floor cleaners. Assess them on their washing performance and handling, separately from the brand’s vacuum cleaners.

  • In tests published in September 2026, UFC-Que Choisir found the washing performance of these models disappointing.
  • However, the same test singled out the PencilWash for being lightweight and easy to manoeuvre.

Cordless floor cleaners on Joybuy

These models are designed for everyday wet cleaning on hard floors. Their stated functions and specifications don’t prove that they can replace a dry vacuum cleaner on every surface. Compare each product listing with your home and cleaning routine.

Frequently asked questions

Will a floor cleaner remove every stain?

No. UFC-Que Choisir’s test, published in March 2026, found that these cleaners have limitations with stubborn stains. When comparing models, look at the types of dirt used in the tests and the testing conditions, rather than judging performance by the appliance’s name alone.

Can you use a floor cleaner on a wooden floor?

Not without checking the type of wooden floor first. Read the floor manufacturer’s care instructions and the cleaner’s guidance before wet-cleaning. If wet cleaning is permitted for a delicate floor, check the recommended water flow setting for that surface.

What should you do after cleaning?

Make sure you can access the dirty-water tank and follow the maintenance instructions for your model. For example, Tineco says to empty the tank before running the self-cleaning cycle on the Floor One S5 Combo Plus, and recommends cleaning its brush after use. An automatic cycle doesn’t mean ‘maintenance-free’.

How do you choose rollers and other replaceable parts?

Start with the exact model number, then check which parts are compatible and follow the replacement recommendations. UFC-Que Choisir highlights that consumables can vary between models in the same range, so the brand name alone isn’t enough.
