Which approach is right for you?

Homes with lots of tiles, PVC or lino

A floor cleaner could be a good choice for regular wet cleaning, provided your flooring is suitable for the selected cleaning mode and you’re happy to maintain the appliance. For PVC, Gerflor recommends avoiding standing water.

If you already own a vacuum cleaner

If you regularly vacuum up dust and dry debris, consider a floor cleaner for washing rather than as a like-for-like replacement: UFC-Que Choisir treats these as two distinct functions.

If your flooring is sensitive to moisture

The finish and grout matter just as much as the material itself. Quick-Step recommends cleaning its parquet with only a slightly damp mop, and allows steam on Alpha Vinyl only under strict conditions.

What should you check before choosing?

Cordless floor cleaner

Worth considering: to combine picking up small amounts of dirt with routine washing on a compatible hard floor.

The trade-off: UFC-Que Choisir says this category won’t necessarily replace dry vacuuming. The tanks and cleaning components also need maintenance.

Separate vacuum and mop

Stick with this if: you need to vacuum dry debris or control moisture levels across different floor types.

The trade-off: vacuuming and washing remain two separate jobs.

Steam cleaning

Worth considering: only if the manufacturer of your installed flooring explicitly approves steam cleaning.

The limitation: approval may come with conditions. For Alpha Vinyl, for example, Quick-Step requires low power and a cloth over the steam outlet.

PriorityWhat to checkWhat I need
Dry vacuuming Check which types of debris the appliance is designed to pick up and on which surfaces. UFC-Que Choisir says a floor cleaner won’t always replace a vacuum for dry dust and debris. I want to cut down on the steps involved in washing the floor, but I also need to vacuum crumbs and dry areas.
Flooring and moisture Compare your flooring’s care instructions with the appliance manual: check the material, finish, amount of water and approved cleaning products. For steam cleaning, look for explicit approval and check any conditions. My floor needs to stay only slightly damp, or its joints require special care.
Appliance maintenance Check how easy it is to access the tanks, rollers or pads and filters. Also check which accessories are compatible and whether they’re available. UFC-Que Choisir notes that consumables are generally brand-specific. After cleaning, I want to be able to empty and clean the appliance’s components without skipping this step.
Moving around and battery life For a cordless model, compare the stated battery life with the area you need to clean and the mode you’ll use. Check how often the tank needs refilling, how easy the appliance is to manoeuvre and whether it can reach all the areas in your rooms. I’d like to clean all the floors I’ve planned without stopping to recharge or refill the appliance.

What mistakes should you avoid?

  • Assuming a floor cleaner will always replace your vacuum

UFC-Que Choisir describes these appliances primarily as wet-cleaning tools for hard floors. Their vacuuming function may not be enough to clean up dry dust and debris.

If you regularly vacuum dry areas or rugs, plan to keep a separate vacuum cleaner.

  • Using the same cleaning method on every hard floor

Gerflor advises against standing water on PVC. Quick-Step recommends using very little water on its parquet and sets specific conditions for using steam on Alpha Vinyl.

Identify your flooring and its finish, then compare the flooring manufacturer’s care instructions with the appliance manual.

  • Forgetting to clean the appliance

Emptying the appliance and cleaning the rollers, pads or filters all add extra steps after washing the floor. UFC-Que Choisir takes these into account when assessing ease of use.

Before choosing a model, check how its components are removed and cleaned.

  • Overlooking consumables

According to UFC-Que Choisir, rollers, filters and detergents need regular replacement and are generally brand-specific.

Check which parts are compatible, when they need replacing and whether they’re available for the specific model.

A guide to the brands

Kärcher

The FC 7 Cordless is one of the brand’s roller-based options for wet cleaning hard floors.

  • Kärcher France lists compatible rollers for several types of hard flooring and says that essential parts for the FC 7 will remain available for at least six years after production ends.
  • The list of floor types approved for the appliance or its rollers doesn’t replace the care instructions from your flooring manufacturer.

Rowenta

The X-Clean range is among the products reviewed by UFC-Que Choisir in France.

  • UFC-Que Choisir included the X-Clean 7 GZ5736E0 in its March 2026 test.
  • The features of one X-Clean model won’t necessarily apply to other Rowenta models.

Tineco

Tineco offers several floor cleaner models featured in French publications by UFC-Que Choisir and Les Numériques.

  • Les Numériques includes the Floor One S9 Scientist and Floor One S5 among the models it has tested.
  • Check battery life, maintenance requirements and accessories for each model and variant.

Appliances for different needs

These Joybuy options include cordless floor cleaners for routine washing, a robot vacuum and mop for automated cleaning, and a corded steam cleaner to consider only if your flooring is suitable for steam. You should still check your flooring’s care instructions.

Frequently asked questions

Can a floor cleaner replace my vacuum?

Not in every case. UFC-Que Choisir says floor cleaners are mainly designed to wash hard floors and won’t necessarily replace a vacuum for dry dust and debris. Keep a vacuum if you regularly need one.

Can I clean lino or PVC with this appliance?

It depends on your flooring and the manufacturer’s care instructions. Gerflor says soapy water is suitable for routine lino care and recommends cleaning PVC with a slightly damp mop, without leaving standing water. Then check that the appliance manual follows these instructions.

Is steam suitable for all hard floors?

No. Quick-Step allows steam on its Alpha Vinyl flooring only under strict conditions, including placing a cloth over the steam outlet, using low power and not leaving the cleaner in one spot for too long. Check the care instructions for your own flooring before using steam.

What should I clean after wet cleaning?

Follow the model’s instructions for emptying the tanks and maintaining the rollers or pads and filters. Check what’s involved before buying: appliance maintenance is part of using a floor cleaner regularly.

Which consumables should I check?

Check which rollers, filters and detergents are compatible with the specific model, and whether they’re available. UFC-Que Choisir says these consumables are generally brand-specific and need regular replacement.
