Which capacity is right for you?

Households of 3 to 4 people

If your laundry baskets are often full, but bulky items don’t dominate every wash, 8 to 9 kg is generally a good starting point, according to UFC-Que Choisir. Adjust this to suit how you sort your laundry and how many cycles you actually run.

Families who regularly wash large loads

If you often wash bedding, towels or other bulky items, and run several loads in a row, a capacity of 10 to 12 kg is a better fit, according to UFC-Que Choisir. However, check the load limits for the programme you use for these items.

Households with limited width

A top-loading machine may fit your available space better. Make sure its capacity will work for your loads: UFC-Que Choisir says top-loading washing machines generally have a capacity of no more than 8 kg.

What should you compare?

Start with the loads you wash most often, then check the programmes and available space before comparing the specifications for each model.

What to considerWhat to checkThink about your needs
Drum capacity Consider how often you really wash large loads. UFC-Que Choisir generally recommends 8–9 kg for 3 to 4 people, and 10–12 kg when you regularly wash several loads in a row. My laundry baskets fill up quickly, but do I often have enough washing to fill a 10 kg drum or larger?
Load limits by programme Check the manual for the maximum load for the programmes you use, particularly for synthetics, jeans and wool. UFC-Que Choisir notes that the rated capacity is based on dry cotton laundry or the Eco 40-60 programme. If I regularly separate fabrics, the load allowed for each programme will determine how many cycles I run.
Style and installation Measure the space, access to connections and clearance needed to load the machine. If you’re considering a top-loader, bear in mind that its capacity is generally limited to 8 kg, according to UFC-Que Choisir. I need to be able to load the machine and open it without obstruction, while still having enough capacity for my laundry.
Durability For a new washing machine sold in France, compare the model’s durability index. The French ministries responsible for ecology say the index has applied to washing machines since 8 April 2025 and takes spare parts, maintenance, ease of disassembly and wear resistance into account. I’d rather look at the maintenance and repair options for the specific model than rely on a single promise of longevity.
Frequent use Compare the spin noise, water per cycle, energy use per 100 cycles and Eco 40-60 programme duration listed for each model. Also check how easy it is to access the filter and, if rinsing performance matters to you, look for test results on this. The machine will be used often, so noise near living areas, cycle duration and ease of maintenance all matter in my day-to-day life.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Choosing based only on the number of people in your household

Two households of the same size may run very different loads, depending on how they sort fabrics and how often they wash bulky items.

For a week or two, take note of the programmes you use and which loads genuinely need an extra cycle. Then choose a capacity to suit.

  • Assuming the stated capacity applies to every fabric

According to UFC-Que Choisir, the rated capacity applies to cotton or Eco 40-60; loads of synthetics, jeans or wool may have a lower weight limit.

Check the load table in the manual for the exact model before relying on its large drum for your usual programmes.

  • Choosing a large capacity when you rarely wash bulky loads

The 10 to 12 kg recommendation from UFC-Que Choisir is mainly for households that regularly run several loads in a row. The stated capacity alone doesn’t tell you how the model will handle your usual loads.

Compare the capacity with the loads you actually wash, then check the energy and water consumption figures for the models you’re considering.

  • Assuming a motor warranty guarantees the durability of the whole appliance

Cover for one component doesn’t tell you about the other parts or how easy the machine is to maintain and dismantle.

For a new model sold in France, compare its durability index, then read the warranty terms and information about spare parts.

A guide to the brands

These examples give you an idea of the formats and capacities available. Compare specifications and warranty terms model by model.

Bosch

An example of a 10 kg front-loader to consider if you regularly wash large family loads.

  • Bosch Electroménager France lists a 10 kg capacity and dimensions of 845 × 598 × 590 mm for the WGB256A2FR.
  • These specifications don’t indicate the load limits for each programme or how much space you’ll need for the connections.

Miele

A brand to consider if you’re comparing front-loading washing machines with capacities of around 9 to 10 kg.

  • Miele France lists a 9 kg capacity and 1,400 rpm for the WWD380 WCS.
  • The claim ‘tested to last 20 years’ is Miele’s statement about this model, not a guaranteed lifespan. Compare its durability index and warranty terms too.

Hisense

A 9 kg front-loader to consider if this capacity suits the loads you wash regularly.

  • Hisense France lists a 9 kg capacity for the WF3S9043BB3 and describes an automatic programme that weighs the laundry and adjusts the cycle.
  • This description of the programme alone doesn’t tell you how well it washes or rinses, or how noisy it is.

AEG / Electrolux

Compare models individually, depending on whether space or an 8 kg front-loader capacity is your main consideration.

  • Electrolux France lists the 8 kg front-loader EW2F6812AW and says its AutoSense function adjusts cycle settings to suit the load.
  • Don’t assume the specifications of this model apply to a top-loader or another appliance from these brands.

Frequently asked questions

Does a family always need a washing machine with a capacity of 10 kg or more?

No. UFC-Que Choisir says 8 to 9 kg is generally enough for 3 to 4 people; 10 to 12 kg is a better fit when you regularly wash several loads in a row. Base your choice on how often you wash large loads, rather than the number of people in your household alone.

Does the stated capacity also apply to synthetics and wool?

Not necessarily. According to UFC-Que Choisir, the rated capacity is based on the weight of dry cotton laundry or the Eco 40-60 programme. Check the manual for the load limits for synthetics, jeans and wool.

What should I compare on the energy label?

Compare the rated capacity, energy use per 100 cycles, water per cycle, programme duration and spin noise. The European Commission explains that the efficiency, duration and water requirements apply to Eco 40-60, so these figures don’t automatically describe the machine’s other programmes.

Which durability index should I check in France?

For a new washing machine sold in France, check the durability index for the specific model. According to the French ministries responsible for ecology, this index has applied to washing machines since 8 April 2025 and takes spare parts, maintenance, ease of disassembly and wear resistance into account.

Is a top-loading washing machine suitable for frequent family laundry?

Yes, if top access suits your installation and its capacity is enough for your usual loads. UFC-Que Choisir says top-loaders generally have a capacity of no more than 8 kg. If you regularly wash larger loads that need more capacity, compare front-loaders that fit your available space.
