Which households is it for?

Families who cook and freeze portions

If you often open the freezer and organise meals, vegetables, meat or home-cooked dishes, an upright freezer with drawers makes it easier to find each category. However, check the available height and the clearance needed for the door.

Households that buy in bulk

A chest freezer is ideal for multipacks, large containers and substantial supplies in a suitable utility room, garage or laundry room. Baskets, labels and stock rotation will help keep everything accessible.

Households replacing their fridge as well

A large fridge freezer can combine chilled and frozen storage when there is only room for one appliance. Nevertheless, compare its freezer capacity alone with that of a separate freezer.

Buying priorities

Upright freezer

Best for: a variety of portions that you want to find quickly thanks to drawers and compartments.

Keep in mind: its height, door clearance and often smaller capacity compared with a large chest freezer.

Chest freezer

Best for: bulk purchases, large containers and family-sized supplies.

Keep in mind: its larger floor footprint and the need to organise contents by depth.

Large fridge freezer

Best for: households that need to increase both their chilled and frozen storage capacity at the same time.

Keep in mind: the freezer compartment capacity and the overall size of the appliance.

Priority What to check Your needs
Access and organisation Compare drawers, shelves, removable baskets and interior lighting where specified. For a chest freezer, plan an arrangement by zones and use labels. I want to find portions quickly and avoid leaving food forgotten at the bottom of the freezer.
Capacity and footprint Compare the net freezer capacity, then the dimensions H × W × D, delivery access and door opening. Que Choisir states that chest freezers can hold up to 600 L. My stock needs to grow without making the appliance impossible to install in the intended room.
Cold retention Check the power-cut storage time, temperature alarm if available, and climate class. The room's temperature range must match that of the model. I want to take power cuts and the actual temperatures of a cellar, garage or laundry room into account.
Energy use, noise and maintenance The European energy label displays the A to G class, energy consumption, capacities and noise level. Compare appliances of similar size and capacity; also check the defrosting system. An appliance that runs continuously near living areas must suit my noise and maintenance requirements.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Comparing only the total capacity of a fridge freezer

The space actually available for frozen food may be much smaller than the overall capacity. The Bosch KGN86AIDR, for example, lists 631 L in total, including 152 L dedicated to freezing.

Compare the net freezer capacity, internal organisation and your usual stock size separately before ruling out a separate freezer.

  • Installing the appliance outside its climate class

According to Bosch, a room that is too cold can cause the motor to stop, while a room that is too warm can make it run continuously and increase energy consumption.

Record the room's minimum and maximum temperatures throughout the year, then check the climate class and the instructions for the exact model.

    Brand guide

    Liebherr

Worth considering for a separate family-sized upright freezer when organised storage and NoFrost technology are priorities for a particular model.

    • The Liebherr FNd 5026 lists 238 L, NoFrost, 36 dB and dimensions of 165.5 × 59.7 × 67.5 cm.
    • These specifications apply to this model and do not automatically apply to the entire range; check the storage time, climate class and installation requirements of your chosen model.

    Haier

The French range includes chest freezers, upright freezers and fridge freezers, allowing you to compare several formats for a family household.

    • The HCE301D chest freezer is listed at 300 L and 1110 × 620 × 845 mm; the H4F306WAH1 upright freezer is listed at 301 L with four drawers.
    • The advanced storage, hygiene or energy-saving features claimed by the manufacturer should be checked for the model concerned.

    Bosch

A useful reference for comparing a large fridge freezer with a separate freezer when a household needs to increase both chilled and frozen storage.

    • The KGN86AIDR fridge freezer lists 479 L of fridge capacity, 152 L of freezer capacity, No Frost and 39 dB.
    • The GTL25920 chest freezer is documented with 247 L and 42 hours of storage time, but its availability should be confirmed before considering it a current offer.

Frequently asked questions

Is an energy label compulsory for a freezer sold in France?

Yes. For domestic fridges and freezers sold in the European Union, the energy label has ranged from A to G since 1 March 2021 and shows, among other details, the efficiency class, energy consumption, storage capacities and noise emissions. ADEME reminds consumers that large domestic appliances must display it in shops and online in France.

Can you install a freezer in a garage or cellar?

Yes, but only if the climate class and the model's instructions correspond to the temperatures in that room. Bosch, for example, specifies a range of 10 to 32 °C for class SN and 18 to 38 °C for ST; Haier states that its H4F306WAH1 can tolerate indoor temperatures as low as -15 °C.

What ventilation should you allow around a freezer?

Follow the distances and ventilation requirements specified in the instructions for your chosen model. Bosch instructions for a chest freezer, for example, specify minimum clearances in a corner or recess to allow warm air to escape freely.

How should you compare storage time during a power cut?

Compare the stated figure for each model, taking into account the definition used. Que Choisir measures this criterion by the time needed for the temperature to rise from -17 °C to -9 °C without power; how full the freezer is, its insulation and the ambient temperature also affect the result.

Does a chest freezer require more maintenance than an upright freezer?

Not necessarily: check the model's defrosting system. The Bosch GTL25920 is specified as having manual defrosting, while a model advertised as NoFrost or Total No Frost is designed to prevent frost build-up and the need for manual defrosting, according to the manufacturer's claims.
