Frequently asked questions
How do you choose a capacity without relying only on the number of people in your household ?
Compare the volume of food you store between shops and the size of your largest containers with the capacity in litres of the freezer compartment. As a guide, Liebherr states 107 l for the Fd 1404, Bosch gives a freezer capacity of 152 l for the KGN86VIEA, and Beko states a net capacity of 451 l for the HSM46740 chest freezer ; these figures are not a recommendation of litres per person.
Is climate class SN enough for a cellar or garage ?
Not necessarily : if the room falls below the appliance’s permitted limit, the climate class alone does not confirm that the model is suitable. Liebherr gives a range of +10 °C to +32 °C for SN. If the room could drop below +10 °C, check that the specific model is suitable for colder conditions ; for example, Beko states a minimum ambient temperature of -15 °C for the HSM46740.
What should you consider when installing and maintaining a freezer ?
Allow space for the door or lid to open and for air to circulate, following the appliance instructions. UFC-Que Choisir recommends keeping appliances away from heat sources, leaving space for air to circulate and regularly defrosting models that do not use fan-assisted cooling ; the required clearance depends on the instructions for the individual model.
Which details should you compare to assess energy consumption ?
Compare the kWh/year shown on the energy labels of models whose freezer capacity meets a similar need. ADEME points out that a freezer runs continuously ; to estimate the annual cost, apply your own electricity tariff to the stated consumption.
Does the energy label also apply to chest freezers and fridge freezers sold in France ?
Yes. The DGCCRF includes freezers, fridges and domestic fridge freezers within the scope of the European energy labelling regulation that has applied since 1st March 2021. Check the label for the model on offer and avoid directly comparing the former A+, A++ or A+++ ratings with the current A to G scale.
