Who is this guide for?

Households that run the dishwasher every day

If you need to fit plates, serving dishes, pans and cutlery into one load, pay as much attention to the basket layout as to the stated number of place settings. UFC-Que Choisir’s tests take into account loading the machine with everyday tableware.

Families replacing a dishwasher in a fitted kitchen

The installation type, the dimensions of the space, the door panel and the connections all determine which models will work before you even compare their programmes.

Households mindful of noise and energy use

If you use your dishwasher often, particularly near a living area, compare each model’s Eco programme figures and duration, as well as its noise level. ADEME lists energy use, noise and capacity among the factors to consider when choosing a dishwasher.

Which features should you check first?

Choose the installation type that suits your kitchen, then check how well the machine loads in practice. A large capacity is available in both freestanding and integrated models.

Freestanding

Consider this if: the space is standalone and you want to replace a dishwasher without fitting it into a unit.

Things to bear in mind: the appliance will be visible, and its position must allow for the necessary connections.

Integrated or fully integrated

Consider this if: your kitchen has a space and, depending on the model, a door panel designed for this type of installation.

Things to bear in mind: the door, hinges and plinth must be compatible with your chosen model.

Feature What to check Who it matters to
Capacity and loading Number of place settings and loading layout; room for large dishes and adjustable baskets. When a day’s worth of dishes also includes pans, I want to avoid having to wash them separately. This could be the top priority for around 31% of consumers.
Installation compatibility Installation type and actual dimensions; for an integrated model, compatibility with the space and door panel. If I’m replacing an appliance in an existing kitchen, I need to be able to fit the new one without altering the unit. Around 25% of consumers might put this compatibility first.
Water, energy and programmes Water and energy use for the Eco programme, and the duration of that same programme; compare figures on a like-for-like basis. With frequent cycles, I want to know how much water and energy the dishwasher uses, but also whether the Eco programme’s duration suits our routine. This could be the main concern for around 25% of consumers.
Noise and repairability Noise level in dB; the model’s repairability index and information about spare parts. In a kitchen close to the living area, I want to keep noise disruption to a minimum and be able to plan for repairs. For around 19% of consumers, these concerns could come ahead of other factors.

What should you look out for?

  • Choosing based on place settings alone

Two dishwashers with a similar stated capacity may fit serving dishes, pans or tall glasses differently, depending on their baskets.

Measure your largest items and check the loading layout for the model you’re considering, including whether the upper basket can be adjusted.

  • Ordering an integrated model without checking the space

A suitable capacity or energy rating doesn’t guarantee that the appliance will fit your unit and door panel.

Measure the available height, width and depth, then check the plinth, hinges, door panel and position of the connections.

Adapting the unit, door panel or connections may require additional work.

  • Taking “quiet” at face value

The stated noise level in dB doesn’t tell you everything about vibrations or alert sounds that could be disruptive near a living area.

Compare the stated noise levels and, if noise is a deciding factor, look for independent tests of the specific appliance.

  • Overlooking repairability and maintenance

For an appliance you use every day, repair options and routine maintenance are also worth considering when choosing a model.

Check its repairability index and information about spare parts, then factor in the consumables you’ll need for your usage.

Detergent and, depending on the appliance and how you use it, dishwasher salt and rinse aid will need replenishing.

Brands to consider

Bosch

Bosch’s range in France includes freestanding and integrated dishwashers, with different configurations to consider depending on your kitchen.

  • The range makes it easy to look for a model by installation type and size.
  • Check the manufacturer’s claims about noise and spare parts for the specific model and the applicable conditions.

Siemens

Siemens offers freestanding and integrated models in France, with different loading configurations depending on the model.

  • For its freestanding SN23EI14CE model, Siemens states an energy rating of C and water use of 9,5 l per Eco cycle.
  • These figures apply to the SN23EI14CE, not all Siemens dishwashers. Check the specifications and basket layout of the model you choose.

Miele

Miele’s French range includes freestanding and integrated dishwashers, with several basket layouts across its models.

  • Miele’s freestanding models have stated capacities of 9 to 14 place settings, giving you several options to compare.
  • Check the space for large dishes, dimensions and noise level for each model rather than assuming these features are the same across the range.

Frequently asked questions

Which figures should I compare for a dishwasher used every day?

Compare capacity, water and energy use for the Eco programme, its duration and each model’s noise level. ADEME recommends using the energy label as a guide. To compare two appliances, look at the same programme and the same measure rather than comparing an Eco figure with one from a different cycle.

Does the repairability index apply to dishwashers sold in France?

Yes. According to the French government departments responsible for ecological transition, dishwashers are among the products covered by France’s repairability index labelling. Before choosing, check the score out of 10 for the model you’re considering, along with information about spare parts and maintenance.

Should I choose a quieter dishwasher?

Noise matters more if the appliance runs near a living area or while your household is spending time there. Compare noise levels in dB and, if possible, look at independent tests: the stated figure alone doesn’t tell you about vibrations or alert sounds.

How can I tell whether a high-capacity model will fit my pans?

The number of place settings isn’t enough on its own. Compare the dimensions of your dishes and pans with the loading layout for the model. Also check whether the baskets can be adjusted for height and how much room the cutlery storage takes up.
