The world of watercolor is fascinating, but its sheer variety can also be overwhelming. With a multitude of options available, it can be difficult to find the high-quality materials that will make all the difference. Between traditional pans, precise pencils, and modern markers, which tool will best serve your creativity?
To help you see more clearly, our editors have carefully reviewed a selection of watercolor sets from Faber-Castell, a brand renowned for the reliability and quality of its materials. Here, we break down the different formats to help you choose the ideal watercolor art kit for your projects, whether you're passionate about travel sketching, illustration, or lettering.
Before diving into our selection, let's review a few essential criteria for finding the perfect watercolor supplies to get started.
The choice of format is crucial: it will directly influence your creative process.
The quality of the pigments guarantees the intensity and longevity of your colors. Lines like Faber-Castell Goldfaber Aqua are known for their excellent pigmentation, ensuring vibrant hues even when highly diluted.
Portability is also a key criterion, especially for artists on the go. A portable watercolor palette with a built-in brush and a lid that doubles as a mixing palette is a major asset for painting outdoors or while traveling.
For beginners or those looking for a ready-to-use solution, a complete set is the simplest and often most economical option. Check that it includes useful accessories like a good brush, a removable palette, or a sturdy storage case. This will save you from making additional purchases and allow you to get started without delay.
We have selected three Faber-Castell sets, each tailored to specific creative needs.

These watercolor markers are the epitome of modernity and versatility. Each marker has a dual tip: on one end, a soft brush tip for broad strokes and expressive lines; on the other, a fine tip (0.6 mm) for details and outlines. The odorless, water-based ink won't bleed through most papers. The icing on the cake: the barrels and caps are made from 100% recycled plastic, a compelling feature for environmentally conscious creatives.

There are several techniques you can use. The most common: draw directly on the paper, then go over the areas you want to turn into watercolor with a wet brush. Another method: lift the color directly from the pencil's tip with a wet brush and apply it to the paper, just as you would with a traditional palette.
Faber-Castell segments its product lines for different audiences. The Goldfaber line is aimed at art students and amateur artists, offering excellent value and very good pigmentation. The Albrecht Dürer line is the brand's professional range: it features a higher pigment concentration and exceptional lightfastness, and is intended for experienced and professional artists.
This is strongly discouraged. Printer paper or standard drawing paper is not designed to absorb water: it will buckle immediately, and the pigments will not be able to spread correctly. To achieve good results, it is essential to use special watercolor paper with a weight of at least 300 gsm. Only this type of paper can absorb water without warping.
