Who are these options suitable for?

People without a suitable external outlet

If you can’t connect a duct to the outside, check whether the extractor hob or downdraft extractor can run in recirculation mode with the filters specified for that model.

People replacing a hob in a kitchen unit with limited space

The visible width isn’t the only thing to consider: the cut-out, drawers and clearance beneath the worktop will determine whether the appliance can replace your old one.

Cooks who prefer external extraction

If you have a suitable outlet, check the duct route and the space needed to install it. If you live in a flat or rent your home, also check whether your planned work requires permission.

What should you check before choosing?

If you want to cook without an extractor hood above your hob, first work out where the extracted air will go, then check each option against your kitchen unit’s dimensions. A downdraft extractor paired with a separate hob lets you choose the two appliances independently, but it still takes up space around and beneath the worktop. A separate conventional extractor hood is only an option if you’re happy to have an appliance above the hob.

Criteria What to check Who this matters to
Recirculation without ducting Recirculation mode available for the model; compatible odour filter and maintenance requirements. I don’t have a usable external outlet and want extraction without installing a duct, but I’m happy to maintain the filters. Around 29% of consumers would make this their top priority.
Space in the kitchen unit Cut-out, worktop depth, clearance beneath the worktop and ventilation requirements in the instructions. I’m replacing a hob and want to keep my drawers usable, so the complete appliance needs to fit in my kitchen unit. This would be the priority for around 29% of consumers.
External extraction Suitable outlet, duct route and accessories compatible with the model; any permissions needed before work begins. I have an external outlet and would prefer to extract air outside the home, provided the connection is feasible. Around 24% of consumers would prioritise this option.
Separate appliances Space required for a separate hob and downdraft extractor, and the extraction mode available on the latter. I want to be able to choose or replace the hob without changing the extractor, and without installing a hood above it. Nearly 18% of consumers would prioritise this flexibility.

Mistakes to avoid before installation

  • Judging by the visible width alone

With an extractor hob, the extraction unit takes up space beneath the worktop. Two appliances with a similar visible width may need different cut-outs and clearances.

Compare the instructions for your chosen model with the cut-out, worktop depth, drawers and available airflow routes.

You may need to adapt the cabinet or worktop, and a drawer may need modifying.

  • Forgetting about recirculation filter maintenance

Odour filters don’t all need to be maintained in the same way. Bosch states that its non-regenerable CleanAir Plus filter lasts 6 to 12 months, while Elica states that one of its regenerable ceramic filters can last up to 5 years. These lifespans don’t apply to other filters from either brand.

Check which filter is compatible with your chosen appliance, how many you need, and the instructions for replacing or regenerating them.

  • Planning an external outlet before checking what work is allowed

A duct route may affect parts of the building that aren’t under the sole control of the occupant. According to ANIL, work affecting the communal areas of a shared-ownership building requires authorisation from the general meeting.

Before ordering, check your proposed route and the requirements for your home. If you’re renting, ask your landlord for permission for any alterations that require it.

  • Assuming a compatible mode means the full installation is covered

An appliance’s extraction mode doesn’t, by itself, determine all the connections you’ll need. Bosch, for example, states that its HEZ9VDKE1 extraction kit may require additional connecting parts.

Ask for a list of the ducts and accessories compatible with your model, chosen mode and actual airflow route.

Brands to know when comparing options

Elica

The NikolaTesla range combines induction cooking with integrated extraction.

  • Elica presents the NikolaTesla Fit as an option that can leave space for the kitchen unit’s top drawer.
  • Check the installation dimensions and whether the filter can be regenerated for the specific model and filter you order.

Bosch

Bosch offers extractor hobs, along with installation and filtration accessories for certain models.

  • Bosch lists the dimensions of the PVS611B16E as 223 × 592 × 522 mm.
  • Kits aren’t automatically interchangeable: Bosch specifies that its HEZ9VDKE1 extraction kit is for worktops at least 60 cm deep.

Novy

Depending on the range, Novy offers both worktop extractors and hobs with integrated extraction.

  • Its worktop extractors include designs with a retractable element or central extraction.
  • The extraction or recirculation mode and filter model depend on the system you choose.

Frequently asked questions

Can an extractor hob work without an external outlet?

Yes, if the model can be installed in recirculation mode using the specified accessories. The filtered air is then returned to the room. Before choosing, check which odour filter is compatible and how to maintain it.

Do you need permission to install external extraction in a shared-ownership building?

According to ANIL, authorisation from the general meeting is required if the work affects communal areas. If you’re considering an outlet in your building, check its proposed position and the duct route against the building’s rules before ordering.

What should tenants check before altering their kitchen?

Before drilling or making a lasting change to the kitchen unit or installation, check with your landlord whether you need their permission and, if so, get it in writing. Service-Public.fr explains that some work carried out by tenants requires the landlord’s authorisation.

Can an extractor hob replace another hob of the same width?

Not based on the visible width alone. Measure the cut-out and worktop depth, then check the available height, drawers, any duct routes and the clearances specified in the instructions for your chosen model.
