Who is this guide for?

Fans of bold espresso made with whole beans

If you have a coffee grinder, you can look for a profile with woody, spicy or smoky notes. Lavazza and Carte Noire describe some of their whole-bean coffees this way. Check the profile on each pack rather than assuming it applies to every coffee from that brand.

Coffee machine capsule users

Your machine’s system determines which capsules to consider. Carte Noire says its Espresso Intense N°9 capsules are compatible with Nespresso Original, while illy’s Iperespresso capsules are designed for illy Iperespresso machines only.

Buyers planning to serve several cups

For a car boot sale or event, choose a quantity that suits your plans and follow the pack’s storage instructions. Formats listed by manufacturers and retailers include 500 g or 1 kg bags of beans and boxes of 100 capsules.

What should you look for?

First check which formats your machine accepts, then choose the flavour profile and quantity you need.

Criteria What to check Who it’s for
Bold flavour Read the tasting notes and compare intensity ratings within each brand’s range. If I’m mainly looking for a cup with pronounced roast notes, the stated flavour profile matters more to me than a number on its own. Around 42% of consumers would put this bold flavour at the top of their list.
Compatible format Check whether your machine takes beans, Nespresso Original capsules or illy Iperespresso capsules. If I have a capsule machine, I want to avoid buying a box I can’t use. This compatibility would be the main consideration for around 33% of consumers.
Suitable quantity Check the weight or number of capsules, then read the storage instructions for after opening. If I’m making several cups at an event, I prefer a quantity I can use and store as directed on the packaging. Nearly 25% of consumers would prioritise the amount they’re buying.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Comparing intensity ratings directly

Lavazza rates Espresso Barista Intenso at 9/10, Carte Noire rates Espresso Puissant at 11/13, and illy rates its Iperespresso Intenso capsules at 7/9. These brand-specific scales don’t let you rank the coffees against each other by how bold they taste.

To compare flavour profiles, also read the ingredients and the tasting notes provided.

  • Choosing capsules based only on the word ‘espresso’

Carte Noire specifies Nespresso Original for its Espresso Intense N°9 capsules; illy says its Iperespresso Intenso capsules are for illy Iperespresso machines only.

Check the exact system your machine uses before choosing a box.

A box designed for a different system won’t work in the machine you have.

  • Buying a large pack before you know the coffee

A 1 kg bag or large box of capsules means committing to a substantial quantity of the same flavour profile, which may not suit your taste.

If you haven’t tried that coffee before, choose a quantity you can use and check the storage instructions for after opening.

Brands and retailers to know

Lavazza

Worth considering if you’re looking for whole-bean espresso with stated cocoa and woody notes.

  • Lavazza describes Espresso Barista Intenso as an Arabica-Robusta blend with an intensity rating of 9/10.
  • This rating belongs to the Lavazza range and can’t be directly compared with other brands’ scales.

Carte Noire

A range of whole-bean and capsule options to explore the flavour you’re after in a format your machine accepts.

  • Carte Noire rates its Espresso Puissant whole beans at 11/13 and offers Espresso Intense N°9 capsules compatible with Nespresso Original.
  • The stated Nespresso Original compatibility for these capsules doesn’t apply to other systems.

illy

An option for anyone with an illy Iperespresso machine who’s looking for Intenso capsules.

  • illy describes its Iperespresso Intenso capsules as 100% Arabica coffee, rated 7/9 for intensity, with cocoa and dried-fruit notes.
  • According to illy, these capsules are suitable only for illy Iperespresso machines.

Carrefour

A retailer to explore for options such as Carrefour Extra Espresso whole-bean coffee in a 500 g bag.

  • Carrefour describes this coffee as intense and says it is packed in a protective atmosphere.
  • These are whole beans, so you’ll need a coffee grinder and a suitable machine.

E.Leclerc

A retailer where you can find different Marque Repère coffee formats. Just remember that beans and ground coffee aren’t interchangeable.

  • The Marque Repère range includes Plantation whole beans in a 1 kg bag and intense pure Arabica ground coffee in a 250 g pack.
  • The word ‘intense’ on the ground coffee doesn’t, on its own, describe the flavour profile of the Plantation beans.

Auchan

A whole-bean coffee range with several options described as having a high intensity rating.

  • Auchan lists, among other options, Auchan beans rated 8 for intensity, Carte Noire beans rated 9, and Lavazza Momento Vivace rated 9/10.
  • These figures don’t provide a shared scale for comparing the coffees’ flavour.

Frequently asked questions

Does a higher intensity rating mean more caffeine?

An intensity rating doesn’t tell you how much caffeine is in each cup. To find out about caffeine, check the information for the coffee and brewing method you’re considering instead of relying on how bold it tastes.

Do illy Iperespresso capsules work in a Nespresso Original machine?

No. illy says its Iperespresso Intenso capsules are designed for illy Iperespresso machines only. If you have a Nespresso Original machine, choose capsules that are explicitly labelled as compatible.

How much coffee should I buy for a car boot sale?

Start with the number of cups you plan to make and the format your machine accepts. Before buying a large bag or a box with lots of capsules, make sure you like the flavour profile and check the storage instructions for after opening.

Can an individual sell unopened coffee at a car boot sale?

Not under the rules for sales by individuals described by France’s Directorate-General for Competition, Consumer Affairs and Fraud Control in September 2026. This option applies to personal, second-hand items, with a limit of two car boot sales a year for participants who aren’t registered with the Trade and Companies Register. If you’re considering selling new coffee, check the rules that apply to this activity. This distinction doesn’t affect buying coffee as a visitor.
