Crispy paninis, perfectly seared vegetables, a beautiful cut of meat with distinct grill marks… the electric grill has become a staple in our kitchens. It's practical, fast, and often healthier, promising enjoyable meals without the hassle of a traditional barbecue. But be warned: with an overwhelming number of options on the market, it's easy to be tempted by the wrong appliance and end up with buyer's remorse.
At Joybuy, I'm in charge of product selection. My role? To help you see things more clearly, cutting through the marketing jargon. Let's focus on the essentials: here are the pitfalls to avoid and the real criteria that matter when making the right choice.
The market is flooded with models making tempting promises. The problem is that some features, while appealing on paper, hide flaws that only become apparent with use.
To avoid making a mistake, simply focus on a few key points that truly impact your appliance's performance and lifespan.
The right amount of power is essential. For a simple panini press or for vegetables, 1000 to 1500?W can be enough. However, to properly sear a cut of meat on a meat grill, aim for at least 1800?W. This is the minimum required to get beautiful sear marks without drying out the meat.
But power isn't everything. An adjustable thermostat is essential. It allows you to adapt the temperature to each type of food: gentle heat for a sandwich, more intense for a ribeye steak. It's the secret to controlled and versatile cooking.
The choice of plates defines how you'll use your appliance:
The non-negotiable feature? Removable plates. Ideally dishwasher-safe, they are the guarantee of quick and easy cleaning. This is the essential condition that will make you want to use your grill every day.
An outdoor electric barbecue is not designed in the same way as an indoor grill. For use on a balcony or terrace, check that the appliance is IPX4 certified. This standard guarantees its protection against water splashes, an essential safety feature for outdoor use.
Rather than searching for a one-size-fits-all model that doesn't exist, it's better to choose an appliance suited to your usage and lifestyle.
Why we recommend it: Perfect for students or small kitchens, this contact grill is the ideal tool for paninis, hot sandwiches, or a quick grilling session. Compact and incredibly simple to use, it's your go-to for fast, hassle-free meals.
It doesn't pretend to be something it's not. Its 1000 W power is perfectly calibrated for its intended use (paninis, sandwiches), avoiding the trap of overrated wattage. Its non-stick coating, designed for a simple wipe-down, is perfectly suited for this type of use.
Simplicity and speed. With its grease-catching tray and compact size, it's as convenient to use as it is to store.
Why we recommend it: The ally for families who want simplicity without sacrificing quality. Its automatic programs adjust the cooking time based on the thickness and type of food, guaranteeing perfect results every time, whether for meat, fish, or sandwiches.
It tackles the problem of uneven cooking head-on with its thickness sensor. The cleaning nightmare is also a thing of the past: its plates and juice tray are removable and dishwasher-safe, which makes all the difference for daily use.
Its smart cooking, with 6 programs and a progress indicator. The angled plates that help drain away fat are also a major asset.
Why we recommend it: For those who want a true outdoor kitchen without the constraints of gas or charcoal. This complete set with a trolley, lid, and side shelves is designed for terraces and gardens, offering a high-end plancha experience.
It defies low-quality materials with its enamelled cast iron plate, renowned for its durability and exceptional heat retention. Its design and "Origine France Garantie" certification are solid guarantees of quality, far from the risk of premature wear.
The build quality and premium materials (enamelled cast iron, stainless steel). Designed for the outdoors (IPX4 standard), it's a long-lasting investment for grilling enthusiasts.
We have put together a complete selection of products that meet our selection criteria and safety standards.
It all depends on your intended use. For sandwiches, paninis, or vegetables, a power rating between 800 and 1500?W is more than enough. To properly sear red meat and get those desirable grill marks, you should look for models between 1800 and 2400?W. High wattage ensures a faster heat-up time and better heat stability when you add cold food.
It's trickier, but not impossible. The key is to act while the appliance is still warm (unplugged, of course!). Use a damp sponge or paper towel to remove the majority of the residue. For stubborn, cooked-on juices, place a damp paper towel between the plates and close the grill for a few minutes: the steam will help loosen everything. Most importantly, never use metal utensils or abrasive sponges, as they will ruin the coating.
An electric grill is an excellent alternative, especially in an apartment or on a balcony where charcoal or gas barbecues are often prohibited. It produces almost no smoke and is easy to use and clean. It excels at searing meat and vegetables. However, don't expect to get that characteristic smoky flavour of a charcoal barbecue. It's a trade-off between authentic flavour and immense everyday convenience.
