Full-face for maximum safety, or open-face for city convenience? What if you no longer had to choose? The modular motorcycle helmet, also known as a flip-up helmet, stands out as the ideal compromise. With the arrival of the new ECE 22.06 homologation standard, safety requirements have taken a leap forward, making these helmets safer than ever.
This guide helps you break down the essential criteria for choosing your certified modular helmet and presents a selection of models that comply with this new standard, designed for both daily commutes and long-distance tours.
Choosing a new helmet isn't a decision to be taken lightly. Beyond just looks, several technical features deserve your full attention to ensure your safety and comfort.
More than just an update, the ECE 22.06 standard, which replaces the old 22.05, is a true revolution. It mandates much stricter impact tests, conducted at different speeds and on a wider range of points on the shell. Crucially, it includes an assessment of resistance to oblique impacts, which generate dangerous rotational forces on the brain. Choosing an ECE 22.06 certified modular helmet means opting for the highest level of safety available today. Check for the dual P/J certification, which guarantees the helmet has been tested and approved in both the closed (P, for "Protective") and open (J, for "Jet") positions.
A good helmet is one you forget you're wearing. To achieve this, several practical features make all the difference in daily use:
The golden rule: a helmet must fit perfectly. If it's too large, it will shift around and won't provide protection in a crash. If it's too small, it will become torture on long rides. Measure your head circumference with a tape measure (at forehead level) and consult the manufacturer's size guide. Most modern helmets, like those in our selection, use injected thermoplastic shells (such as ABS) that offer an excellent strength-to-weight ratio.
Here are a few models that check all the boxes for safety and practicality for both male and female motorcycle and scooter riders.

A full-face helmet has a one-piece shell, offering maximum structural protection. A modular, or flip-up, helmet has a chin bar that lifts, transforming it into an open-face style helmet. This is much more convenient during stops to chat, have a drink, or simply get some fresh air without having to remove the helmet completely.
With the ECE 22.06 standard, modular helmets are tested with the chin bar in the closed position and, if they have dual P/J certification, also in the open position. In the closed configuration, a 22.06 modular helmet offers a level of protection very close to that of a full-face helmet. The key factor remains the robustness of the chin bar mechanism, which undergoes specific resistance tests under this new standard.
A motorcycle helmet with Bluetooth preparation has recesses near the ears to house the speakers and discreet channels for the cables. Installation is simple: you attach the external module to the side of the helmet, slide the speakers into their slots under the padding, and position the microphone. This prevents pressure points and ensures a clean, comfortable integration.
