Who is this guide for?

Buyers concerned about breakdowns

You’re replacing a machine and want to compare reliability without mistaking a regulatory rating for a promise of how many years it will last.

Buyers who want the option to repair

You want to check information about compatible parts, their prices and warranty terms before choosing a new model.

Buyers who value easy day-to-day maintenance

You want a machine that’s easy to maintain, with features such as accessible filters, and a capacity that suits your laundry loads.

What to compare

Compare the durability rating

Best for: buying a new appliance and comparing models suited to the same loads. Check the rating out of 10 and the details behind the reliability and repairability criteria.

Keep in mind: ADEME explains that the rating criteria don’t guarantee the lifespan of your individual appliance.

Check parts and warranties

Best for: planning ahead for a repair. Check part references, prices and the written warranty terms for the exact model.

Keep in mind: a brand-wide statement about parts availability or a motor-only warranty doesn’t, by itself, tell you about every part or the whole machine.

Get your current machine assessed

Best for: if your washing machine can still be repaired, ask for an itemised quote and compare it with the cost of a replacement before deciding.

Keep in mind: ecosystem offers a €50 bonus for eligible repairs carried out by a QualiRépar repairer outside the warranty period. Not every repair meets these conditions.

The French Ministry of the Economy says the durability rating has applied to relevant new washing machines sold in France since April 2025. ADEME explains that it takes account of factors including reliability, repairability and maintenance.

What matters to you What to check Who cares most about it?
Reliability and rating Rating out of 10 and details of the reliability and repairability sections for the exact model. I want to avoid another breakdown and understand what the rating really tells me. Around 33% of consumers put reliability at the top of their list.
Parts and warranties Information about parts, compatibility, prices and the written scope of warranties. I want to know whether a repair will still be possible and which parts or components are covered. Around 27% of consumers prioritise repairability and warranties.
Easy maintenance The manual, access to the filter and seal, and the space needed around the appliance. I want to be able to carry out the recommended maintenance easily in the space available. Around 20% of consumers prioritise ease of maintenance.
Use and running costs Your usual laundry loads, the dimensions and the consumption figures on the energy label. I want to choose a capacity that suits my laundry and take running costs into account. Around 20% of consumers prioritise how well the appliance suits their needs and its running costs.

Pitfalls to avoid

  • Confusing the durability rating with the energy label

These two provide different information: the durability rating doesn’t replace a comparison of energy consumption, noise and capacity.

Check the details behind the rating, then use the energy label to compare consumption and noise. Choose a capacity that suits your laundry loads.

  • Assuming a motor warranty covers the whole machine

A commercial warranty may cover only the motor, as is the case with the warranty listed for the Bosch WAN2827FFR. It doesn’t mean every component is covered.

Check which components are covered and read the written terms. Also distinguish this warranty from the statutory guarantee of conformity.

Depending on the warranties that apply, you may have to pay for work on a component that isn’t covered.

  • Assuming the bonus makes every repair cheaper

Eligibility for the bonus offered by ecosystem depends, among other things, on whether the repair qualifies, is outside the warranty period and is carried out by a QualiRépar repairer.

Ask for a total quote, check eligibility with the repairer and compare the amount you’d still have to pay with the cost of a suitable replacement.

Brands to consider for a durable washing machine

Electrolux

Front-loading washing machines and parts searches by product number (PNC).

  • Electrolux France offers a tool for finding spare parts by product number.
  • For the model you choose, check compatible parts, their prices and the maintenance information for that model.

Miele

The W1 range includes the WCA120 WCS 8kg Active washing machine.

  • Miele France says it keeps original parts for at least 15 years after mass production ends.
  • This statement doesn’t confirm the availability or price of a specific part for the model you choose. Miele also presents the claim “tested to last 20 years” as a brand claim, not as a lifespan guaranteed to buyers.

Bosch

The Series 4 range includes the 8 kg front-loading WAN2827FFR washing machine.

  • Bosch says its washing machine parts are generally available for 15 years and offers a search by E-Nr number.
  • For the WAN2827FFR, Bosch lists a 10-year warranty on the EcoSilence Drive motor, not the entire machine. Check the terms.

LG

LG lists the F14X56WHST with an 11 kg capacity.

  • The stated capacity is worth considering if your laundry loads need this much space.
  • Don’t assume performance claims based on tests of other models apply to this one.

Frequently asked questions

Does a new washing machine sold in France have to display a durability rating?

Yes. For the relevant front-loading and top-loading washing machines, the durability rating replaced the repairability index on 8 April 2025. For online sales, the French Ministry of the Economy says details of the rating must be accessible from the same page as the rating, close to the price and in no more than one action.

Does a rating out of 10 tell me how many years the washing machine will work?

No, it doesn’t guarantee the lifespan of your appliance. The rating takes account of reliability and repairability criteria, including maintenance, documentation and parts, but it doesn’t predict how long an individual machine will work.

Does the stated parts availability guarantee that the part I need will be available?

No. A general statement doesn’t confirm the availability or price of every part compatible with your model. The DGCCRF says that, for certain household washing machine parts, there is an additional period of ten years after the last unit of a model is placed on the market. This doesn’t guarantee the availability or price of every part.

Can I get help with repairing my current washing machine?

Yes. You may be eligible for the €50 bonus offered by ecosystem for a qualifying repair carried out by a QualiRépar repairer outside the warranty period. Check that the repair qualifies and ask for a quote: this amount doesn’t cover the total cost of the repair.

What protection applies if a new washing machine has a fault that means it doesn’t conform to the contract?

You can claim under the statutory guarantee of conformity through the retailer. The French Ministry of the Economy states that the period for new goods is two years. Any additional commercial warranty is subject to its own terms and doesn’t replace this statutory guarantee.
