Who are these options for?

Homes with space for just one appliance

If there’s no room for a second appliance in your flat, your choice is between a washing machine and drying rack, or a washer-dryer. For the latter, compare the load you usually wash with the amount the appliance can dry in one cycle: these are two separate limits.

Homes that often dry full loads

If you’d like to use a drying rack less and have space for a dedicated appliance, check its drying capacity, Eco programme duration, noise level, energy use per cycle and how condensed water is collected or drained away.

Homes that keep using a drying rack

Choosing the right spin cycle can help when laundry needs to dry quickly indoors, according to ADEME. Where you put the drying rack matters too: the agency recommends using a large, well-ventilated room or one fitted with mechanical ventilation (VMC) extraction.

What should you compare?

Spin cycle and drying rack

Worth considering: if you can set aside a suitable room for air-drying laundry without adding a large appliance.

The trade-off: your laundry still takes up space while it dries. ADEME recommends using a large, well-ventilated room or one fitted with mechanical ventilation (VMC) extraction.

Dedicated tumble dryer

Worth considering: if you regularly dry large loads and have a suitable extra space for an appliance.

The trade-off: you’ll need room for the appliance and a way to manage condensed water. Check, too, whether the Eco programme duration fits your routine.

Washer-dryer

Worth considering: if you only have space for one appliance and want to wash and dry your laundry without transferring it between machines.

The trade-off: to dry the whole load without removing any laundry, the initial load must not exceed the drying capacity. European regulations set separate capacities for washing and drying.

Once you’ve chosen an option, compare the loads and cycles that suit the way you do laundry, then check that the appliance or drying rack will fit in your home.

FactorWhat to checkWhat you need
Spin cycle and drying rack Check the spin-drying efficiency class, then the stated spin speed for the model and fabric in question. For your drying rack, check whether you can use a large, well-ventilated room or one fitted with mechanical ventilation (VMC) extraction, as ADEME recommends. I’ll keep using a drying rack, but want to reduce how long my laundry stays on it.
Available space Measure the height, width and depth, then check the clearances and connections required in the model’s instructions. According to the European Commission, a condenser tumble dryer doesn’t need an external air vent; however, condensed water must still be collected or drained away. I need to know whether I can fit a second appliance or whether both functions need to share one space.
Load to dry For a washer-dryer, compare the washing and drying capacities separately, in kg. For a dedicated tumble dryer, check its capacity against the load you usually want to dry in one go. Do I need to be able to dry a whole wash load without taking some of the laundry out?
Duration and energy use Compare like-for-like programmes and units: a complete wash-and-dry cycle for a washer-dryer, and the Eco programme for a tumble dryer. The European Commission lists the Eco programme duration and weighted energy consumption per cycle for tumble dryers in EPREL. I want to know how long my chosen cycle will take and compare energy use on a like-for-like basis.
Noise and maintenance Check the noise level stated for the relevant cycle, how condensed water is handled and the maintenance tasks listed in the instructions. If the washing machine is covered by the durability index, check that too. ADEME says the index has been displayed on washing machines put on sale since April 2025. In my flat, noise and maintenance could matter just as much as the stated capacity.

What mistakes should you avoid?

  • Confusing washing capacity with drying capacity

A washer-dryer has separate maximum load capacities for washing and drying. For example, Whirlpool France lists 10/7 kg for the FFDD1074489BVFR and 9/6 kg for the BIWDWG961485FR. A load washed at the maximum capacity may not be dryable in one go.

First work out how much laundry you want to dry without interruption, then check the two capacities of your chosen model separately.

  • Comparing tumble dryers on energy rating alone

The energy rating doesn’t tell you the Eco programme duration, capacity, noise level or condensation efficiency. A quick programme alone doesn’t tell you how the model performs on the Eco cycle used to compare appliances.

Check the energy label and EPREL product fiche provided by the European Commission, comparing the same programmes and units.

  • Assuming you’ll always need an external air vent

The European Commission states that condenser tumble dryers don’t need an external air vent. However, you’ll still need to consider how the model handles condensed water.

Check the instructions to see whether water collects in a tank that needs emptying or whether the dryer can be connected to a drain. Also check any other installation requirements.

  • Positioning your drying rack without considering ventilation

ADEME says air-drying laundry releases a lot of moisture into the air indoors. A more effective spin cycle doesn’t mean you can overlook choosing a suitable place to dry your laundry.

Choose a large, well-ventilated room or one with a mechanical ventilation (VMC) extractor, as ADEME recommends.

A guide to brands and models

These features apply to the models mentioned; they don’t describe every product in each brand’s range.

Bosch

The WQH246CAFR is a good example of the features to check in a dedicated heat pump tumble dryer.

  • Bosch Electroménager France lists a 9 kg capacity, dimensions of 842 × 598 × 613 mm, a noise level of 59 dB and a water drain hose.
  • These details apply to the WQH246CAFR. Check the instructions and specifications for the model you’re considering installing.

Whirlpool

The French product pages for the freestanding FFDD1074489BVFR and built-in BIWDWG961485FR show two different washer-dryer configurations.

  • Whirlpool France gives washing/drying capacities of 10/7 kg and 9/6 kg respectively; the listed depth of the built-in model is 54,5 cm.
  • Check the capacities and dimensions of the exact model you’re considering: the installation type alone doesn’t tell you how much space you’ll need or how much laundry it can dry.

Electrolux

The EW7IW416DAV washer-dryer shows how washing and drying capacities differ on a specific model.

  • Electrolux France lists a washing capacity of 10,5 kg, a drying capacity of 6 kg and a spin speed of 1 500 tr/min, with an A rating for washing alone and D for the wash-and-dry cycle.
  • To compare its cycles with those of another appliance, use data for the same type of use rather than looking at the washing rating alone.

Washer-dryers and tumble dryers on Joybuy

This selection includes washer-dryers for homes with space for one appliance and heat pump tumble dryers for homes that can accommodate a dedicated appliance. Compare each capacity with the amount of laundry you actually want to dry.

Frequently asked questions

Can you wash a full load and then dry it in a washer-dryer without removing any laundry?

Yes, as long as the initial load is also within the drying capacity of the selected programme. European regulations distinguish between rated washing and drying capacities. On a model rated at 10/7 kg, a 10 kg load exceeds the 7 kg limit for drying in one go.

Does a condenser tumble dryer need an external air vent?

No. The European Commission states that condenser tumble dryers don’t need an external air vent. However, check the model’s instructions for details of the water tank or drain connection for condensed water, as well as the required location, connection and clearances.

What should you compare between two tumble dryers?

Compare capacity, weighted energy consumption per cycle, Eco programme duration, noise level and condensation efficiency on a like-for-like basis. The European Commission lists this information in EPREL. For models covered by the label in force since 1 July 2025, don’t confuse its A to G scale with the previous A+++ to D scale.

Where should you put a drying rack when drying laundry indoors?

ADEME recommends a large, well-ventilated room or one with a mechanical ventilation (VMC) extractor, ideally with humidity control. Spinning helps prepare laundry for indoor drying, but it doesn’t replace the need for good ventilation.

Which durability indicator should you check for a washing machine?

Check the durability index if it applies to the washing machine you’re considering. According to ADEME, the index has been displayed on washing machines put on sale since April 2025 and takes reliability, maintenance and repairability into account, among other factors. It complements comparisons of capacity and cycle data.
