Which households is this for?

Households drying several loads a week without outdoor space

You do not have enough room to leave several loads drying on an airer for long periods and are looking for a more predictable solution. Focus on capacity, noise, energy consumption, water drainage and drying time when comparing options.

People living in a small home with an indoor airer

You still dry your laundry naturally but need to limit moisture and clutter in a room. Check the available ventilation and the room size before adding a dehumidifier.

People replacing their washing machine

Without necessarily buying a separate drying appliance, you can reduce the residual water in your laundry with a washing machine suited to your usual loads, offering effective spin performance and a noise level compatible with your home.

What to check before buying

Start by deciding where your laundry will dry, then compare appliances based on your laundry volume, the room’s humidity and installation requirements.

Priority What to check Your needs
Humidity and ventilation For an airer, choose a large, well-ventilated room or one fitted with a mechanical ventilation extraction vent. Check that the dehumidifier is suitable for the room size and has an appropriately sized tank or drainage system. I want to dry laundry without turning a small, poorly ventilated room into a permanent drying area.
Electricity consumption Compare the A to G energy rating, Eco programme consumption and capacity on the energy label. UFC-Que Choisir distinguishes heat-pump models by their low consumption, while conventional condenser models can dry more quickly. If mechanical drying is necessary, I want to keep consumption down during regular cycles.
Capacity, footprint and noise Match the capacity in kg to your actual loads. Compare the dimensions, the Eco programme’s noise emissions and whether there is a tank or condensate drainage connection. The appliance must fit into my home and remain acceptable to use at the times I need it.
Maintenance Identify the lint filter, condenser maintenance requirements and condensate tank management. Also check the repairability and spare-parts information in the model documentation. I prefer a maintenance routine that fits around my schedule, without overlooking anything needed for proper operation.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Using a dehumidifier to work around a ventilation problem

A dehumidifier can improve drying locally when used with an airer, but it cannot replace the continuous removal of moisture provided by a properly functioning mechanical ventilation system.

Before buying, check that the room is large enough, well ventilated and fitted with suitable extraction. Then choose the dehumidifier according to the room size.

  • Comparing tumble dryers solely by their advertised drying time

Heat-pump tumble dryers generally use less energy than conventional condenser models, but the latter can dry more quickly. One feature alone is therefore not enough to make your choice.

Compare models with similar capacities by looking at the energy label, Eco programme consumption, noise and condensate management.

Electricity consumption depends in particular on the technology, programme, load and model.

  • Choosing the maximum capacity without considering your actual loads

An appliance that is too large will not automatically make laundry organisation easier, while one that is too small may mean running more cycles or drying loads separately.

Base the capacity of your washing machine and tumble dryer on your usual loads, bulky fabrics and whether you can dry a full load. Also check the available dimensions.

  • Forgetting to maintain the filters and condensate system

Maintenance affects the everyday use of a tumble dryer. Automatic cleaning systems are not available on every model.

Read the instructions before buying, identify the necessary manual maintenance and check whether you can easily empty the tank or connect the condensate drain.

Brand overview

Bosch

The French range of Bosch heat-pump tumble dryers includes 8 and 9 kg models; some versions offer automatic drying-level adjustment, a half-load option or a self-cleaning condenser.

  • Bosch states that some heat-pump models reuse hot air and feature a SelfCleaning Condenser.
  • Capacity, noise, dimensions, condensate drainage and features vary by model.

Miele

The T1 range includes 8 and 9 kg heat-pump tumble dryers; depending on the model, it offers humidity control, connectivity or noise-reduction functions.

  • Miele product sheets for some models specify heat-pump technology and 62 dB(A) on the Eco programme.
  • These specifications do not apply to the entire range and should be checked for each individual model.

Beko

Beko offers heat-pump tumble dryers with, depending on the model, large capacities, steam programmes and drum technologies designed to care for your laundry.

  • Beko presents the reuse of hot air through heat-pump technology as a way to reduce consumption on certain models.
  • Check the energy label, noise level, capacity and programmes of your chosen model.

De’Longhi

The Tasciugo range of domestic dehumidifiers can complement airer drying in an indoor room.

  • De’Longhi states that some appliances offer humidity settings and can remove up to 10 or 21 litres of moisture per day, depending on the model.
  • The intended room size, noise level, tank, continuous drainage and operating temperature should be checked for each appliance.

Frequently asked questions

Can a dehumidifier replace mechanical ventilation for drying laundry?

No. It can complement airer drying in a room, but ADEME explains that mechanical ventilation continuously removes moisture and pollutants from the home; a dehumidifier does not create this outlet to the outside.

Where should you put an airer when there is no outdoor space?

Choose a large, well-ventilated room or one with a mechanical ventilation extraction vent. ADEME’s Q-WASH study recommends these arrangements for indoor drying rather than using a small, enclosed room over a long period.

Which figures should you compare on a tumble dryer’s energy label?

At a minimum, compare the A to G energy rating, Eco programme consumption, rated capacity and noise emissions. Since 1 July 2025, the European Union has applied a revised label to domestic tumble dryers.

Is a large-capacity washing machine necessarily better for indoor drying?

No. The capacity should match the amount of laundry you actually wash, helping you avoid running more cycles with a drum that is not full enough. ADEME states that a 7 kg washing machine is usually sufficient and recommends checking spin efficiency and noise on the energy label.

Is a vented tumble dryer suitable for a home without outdoor space?

Generally, it is not the most suitable option, as a vented tumble dryer needs an opening to the outside to expel hot, humid air through a duct. Condenser models collect the extracted water in a tank or send it to a drain, depending on the model.
