Who are these solutions for?

People with room for just one appliance

If you can only fit one machine, a washer-dryer combines both functions. Pay particular attention to its drying capacity and compare it with your usual load: UFC-Que Choisir points out that this is lower than its washing capacity.

People who can make use of vertical space

If a machine already takes up floor space and there’s enough height, a stacked setup can accommodate a separate tumble dryer. Before stacking, check that both model numbers and the stacking kit are compatible, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

People concerned about damp or noise

When you dry laundry in your living space, ventilation deserves just as much attention as your choice of appliance. If the machine needs to run near your living or sleeping area, compare its stated noise level too. One review on the Darty After-Sales Community describes the noise as disruptive in a studio flat, although this doesn’t mean all models will be the same.

What should you check before choosing?

Start by measuring the space and deciding whether two compatible appliances can be stacked. Then compare your laundry loads, ventilation requirements and the specifications of the exact model. A separate tumble dryer, whether heat-pump or condenser, needs its own floor space or a compatible stacked installation.

Factor What to check Who it matters to
Available space Measure the depth, including connections, as well as the door clearance and available height. For a stacked setup, check the model numbers of the appliances and stacking kit. I want to keep my main room usable rather than give up more floor space. Around 33% of consumers rank saving space as their top priority.
Moisture from laundry Check the room’s ventilation or extraction, and how the appliance collects or drains water. When my laundry dries in the studio flat, my first priority is to avoid leaving it damp in the living space. This is said to be a priority for around 27% of consumers.
Load size and drying time Compare the drying capacity in kilograms with your usual loads, then check the programme times for the model you’re considering. If I wash large loads, having to remove some laundry before drying makes things harder to organise. Around 20% of consumers prioritise capacity and drying time.
Noise and fabrics Compare the stated decibel level for the exact model, and check its programmes and your clothing care labels. With a machine close to my living space, I mainly want to keep noise to a minimum and choose cycles that suit my fabrics. Around 20% of consumers put noise and laundry care first.

ADEME highlights the moisture released into the home when laundry is air-dried indoors. However, replacing your clothes airer doesn’t prove that your home has adequate ventilation. For comparing tumble dryers in the European Union, the European Commission Representation in France says that the revised energy label, rated from A to G, has applied since 1 July 2025. Also check the figures and installation requirements for each model.

What mistakes should you avoid?

  • Choosing a washer-dryer based on its washing capacity alone

UFC-Que Choisir distinguishes between the washing capacity and the lower drying capacity. So a load that fits in the drum for washing may need to be partly removed before drying.

Compare the model’s drying capacity with the amount of laundry you want to dry in one go, especially if you plan to run a wash-and-dry cycle.

  • Stacking two machines without checking they’re compatible

Having a front-loading washing machine isn’t enough to confirm that you can stack another appliance on top. Bosch says that one of its kits requires, among other things, a full-size washing machine with a depth of more than 55 cm, and that compatibility must be confirmed by model number.

Note down the full model numbers of both machines, then check the kit, depth, height and corresponding installation instructions.

Depending on your chosen setup, you’ll also need to budget for a compatible kit and follow the manufacturer’s installation requirements.

  • Relying on a tumble dryer to fix poor ventilation

No longer drying laundry on an airer in the room changes how it dries, but it doesn’t tell you whether your home’s ventilation is working properly.

Check the ventilation separately. If you still air-dry laundry indoors, ADEME recommends using a large, well-ventilated room or one with suitable extraction.

  • Overlooking noise and garment care instructions

In a home with just one living space, noise levels depend partly on where the appliance is placed and which model you choose. Choosing a programme doesn’t remove the need to check whether each fabric is suitable for tumble drying.

Compare the stated decibel levels and read the instructions before placing the machine near your sleeping area. For your clothes, follow the care labels and choose a suitable programme, as Electrolux Support France advises.

Brands to consider for your project

Bosch

Worth considering for a stacked setup with a dedicated stacking kit.

  • For its 00717524 kit, Bosch specifies a full-size washing machine with a depth of more than 55 cm.
  • This requirement doesn’t automatically make every Bosch pairing compatible, or allow you to stack appliances from different brands. Check which model numbers the kit is designed for.

Electrolux

Check its tumble dryer specifications to compare the capacity and noise level of a particular model.

  • Electrolux lists an 8 kg capacity and a noise level of 67 dB for its EW6HI5829SB heat-pump model.
  • These figures don’t apply to the brand’s other tumble dryers. Also check the dimensions and operating requirements of the model you’re considering.

LG

A brand to consider if you want both functions in a single machine.

  • LG’s product page for the F96400WHR lists a 9 kg washing capacity and a 6 kg drying capacity, illustrating the two figures you should compare.
  • This example doesn’t tell you the capacities or availability of other LG models.

Beko

Worth exploring if you need a tumble dryer that fits into a narrow alcove.

  • Darty lists the D34H28393A model with a depth of 54.5 cm and a stated noise level of 64 dB.
  • Check the full measurements and clearance required: this model’s dimensions don’t apply to other Beko tumble dryers.

Joybuy products to suit your available space

The first four machines combine washing and drying, so they only need one space. The Hotpoint tumble dryer is a separate appliance: consider it if you have a dedicated space, or once you’ve confirmed that it’s compatible with a stacked setup using your washing machine.

Samsung WD11DG6B85BEU3 washer-dryer

Samsung WD11DG6B85BEU3, 11/6 kg washer-dryer

Worth considering if you need to wash and dry with one machine. This model is listed with an 11 kg washing capacity and a 6 kg drying capacity. Before planning a continuous wash-and-dry cycle, compare your usual load with that lower limit.

Check the dimensions, including connections, and the programme time that suits your needs.

Hotpoint CHD84MWBSEE heat-pump tumble dryer

Hotpoint CHD84MWBSEE, 8 kg heat-pump tumble dryer

Consider this separate tumble dryer if you can give it its own space or confirm that it’s compatible with your stacking setup. Its listed capacity is 8 kg, but that alone doesn’t tell you how much room you’ll need in your studio flat.

Measure the space and compare the stated energy consumption and noise level before deciding where to install it.

Frequently asked questions

Will a tumble dryer solve damp problems in a studio flat?

No. It means you won’t have to leave laundry drying on an airer in the room, but it doesn’t replace proper ventilation. If you air-dry laundry indoors, ADEME recommends using a large, well-ventilated room or one with a suitable extractor vent.

Can a washer-dryer dry a full load straight after washing it?

Not if the wash load exceeds the model’s drying capacity. UFC-Que Choisir notes that this capacity is lower than the washing capacity. Compare the two figures, then remove some laundry or split the drying load if necessary.

Can you place a tumble dryer directly on top of a washing machine?

Only do so with a compatible setup and stacking kit for the exact model numbers, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions. For its 00717524 kit, Bosch requires, among other things, a full-size washing machine with a depth of more than 55 cm. This requirement doesn’t mean other kits will be suitable.

What should you compare on the label of a tumble dryer sold in France?

Compare the model’s energy rating and figures rather than looking at the letter alone. The European Commission Representation in France says that the revised A-to-G label has applied to domestic tumble dryers in the European Union since 1 July 2025. Also check the noise level, capacity and dimensions that matter in your studio flat.

How can you reduce the risk of clothes shrinking?

First, check that the garment’s care label says it’s suitable for tumble drying, then choose a programme that’s right for the fabric. Electrolux Support France stresses the importance of following care instructions: no programme can make an item suitable for tumble drying if its label says otherwise.
