Who is it for?

Homes without a balcony or outdoor space

You want to avoid leaving several loads of wet laundry in your living areas and may be considering a dedicated appliance or a washer-dryer, depending on the space available. ADEME highlights the importance of ventilation when drying laundry indoors.

People living in small homes

You do not have room for two appliances and need to weigh the space-saving benefits of a washer-dryer against its drying capacity, which is generally lower than its washing capacity. UFC-Que Choisir also reports that drying takes longer with one than with a dedicated tumble dryer.

Users mindful of electricity consumption

You want to compare a new appliance using the current energy label rather than the old A+++ rating. Since 1 July 2025, tumble-dryer labels have used the A to G scale, according to the European Commission.

Buying priorities

Start by checking the space actually available and the ventilation conditions. Then compare the drying capacity, energy data and maintenance requirements for each model.

Priority What to check Your needs
Humidity and ventilation For an airer, choose a large, well-ventilated room or one with suitable extraction. A condenser tumble dryer does not require ducting to the outside, subject to the instructions and installation space. I want to reduce the time wet laundry remains in my living areas, or have a suitable room for drying clothes on an airer.
Consumption and energy label Compare the A to G label for tumble dryers and the data for the wash-and-dry cycle on a washer-dryer. Since 1 July 2025, new tumble dryers placed on the European Union market must use a heat pump, according to the European Commission. I want to read standardised data for the exact model, rather than estimating drying consumption from washing information alone.
Space and capacity Measure the width, height, depth and clearance required. Compare the drying capacity with your usual loads: a washer-dryer’s drying capacity is lower than its washing capacity. My home can accommodate only one appliance, but I want to avoid routinely removing part of the washing before drying.
Duration, noise and maintenance Compare the duration for a similar load and programme, as well as the noise level in dB(A). Check the cleaning instructions for the filter and, where applicable, the condenser. The appliance will be close to a living area or run at certain times; I want to be able to plan for its noise and routine maintenance.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming the washing capacity is also the drying capacity

A load suitable for washing may exceed the drying programme’s limit. You may then need to remove some laundry or split the cycles, and drying takes longer than with a dedicated tumble dryer, according to UFC-Que Choisir.

Compare the washing and drying capacities listed for each model separately, then base your choice on the volumes you actually dry.

  • Buying based on an old A+++ rating

The letters on the old A+++ to D scale cannot be compared directly with the A to G scale used for tumble dryers since 1 July 2025.

For a new appliance or end-of-line stock, check the A to G label, consumption data and the EPREL QR code associated with the exact model.

  • Putting an airer in a confined room

ADEME describes air-drying laundry as an activity that releases a very high level of moisture into indoor air. So, although it uses no electricity, suitable ventilation is still essential.

Keep the airer in a large, well-ventilated room or one with suitable extraction. If you are unsure about the condition of the ventilation, ask a qualified professional for advice.

  • Neglecting to clean the filters and condenser

A build-up of lint can affect performance. Electrolux states that a blocked condenser can increase consumption and damage the appliance.

Follow the cleaning frequency and method specified in your model’s instructions. Only clean an accessible condenser in accordance with the manufacturer’s guidance.

Brand overview

Bosch

In France, Bosch offers a range of heat-pump tumble dryers, including 8 and 9 kg models. Depending on the model, the range information includes the capacity, energy costs per cycle and a product information sheet.

  • Worth considering if you want to compare several capacities and depths within the same heat-pump range.
  • The per-cycle costs displayed by Bosch are not enough to compare the duration, noise, maintenance or suitability of each model for your room.

Miele

In France, Miele sells T1 and T2 heat-pump tumble dryers, mainly with 8 or 9 kg capacities. Features vary by model and include options such as SilenceDrum, DryCare 40, SteamCare and connectivity.

  • Worth exploring if laundry-care features, reduced noise or ease of use are important to your decision.
  • These features are the brand’s stated claims and specifications; check them model by model, together with the energy label and dimensions.

Beko

Beko’s French range of heat-pump tumble dryers includes several capacities and models with options such as a night programme, steam or an AquaWave drum.

  • Worth exploring if you are looking for a large capacity or specific features, such as a night programme.
  • According to Beko, the heat pump reuses warm air and reduces consumption; nevertheless, compare the standardised data on the label for the exact model.

Frequently asked questions

Can you dry laundry on an airer in a poorly ventilated home?

Yes, provided you place it in a large, well-ventilated room or one with a suitable VMC extraction vent. ADEME recommends these conditions because air-drying laundry releases a lot of moisture into indoor air; however, they cannot be used to assess the actual ventilation of a home remotely.

Does a heat-pump tumble dryer need ducting to the outside?

No. A condenser tumble dryer, including a heat-pump model, does not require a duct to the outside, unlike a vented model. You should still check the instructions for clearance requirements, the electrical connection and, depending on the installation, water drainage.

Why can’t you dry a whole wash load in a washer-dryer?

The drying capacity is lower than the washing capacity. To run a wash and dry cycle without removing any laundry, the initial load must remain within the drying programme’s limit; UFC-Que Choisir reports drying capacities of 2,5 to 8 kg depending on the model.

Which energy label should you look for on a new tumble dryer in France?

Since 1 July 2025, tumble-dryer energy labels have used an A to G scale and include a QR code providing access to more information in EPREL. The European Commission states that new tumble dryers placed on the European Union market since that date must use a heat pump, while appliances placed on the market previously may still be held in stock.

What maintenance can help limit an increase in a tumble dryer’s energy consumption?

Follow your model’s instructions and clean the lint filter after every cycle when required by the appliance. For applicable models, do not continue using a dirty condenser: Electrolux states that this can damage the appliance and increase its energy consumption.
